Obviously West!! Our 3rd.

Are you getting mixed up with Dawson Simpson. Or do your mean Dawson Simpson and Scott Simpson. If you mean Scott, he is not a ruckman.

Anyway Im hoping Dawson will step up next year! At 206cm he has the height!

Whats the go with West? Has he been offered a contract. You would think so now that Mummy has left. Not sure if West has the height to be a dominating ruckman. Needs to improve around the ground also.

This is a good representation of where it is at right now (although I'd have a few more --- between Otto and Blake).

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

I would like to see Dawson Simpson in the first round of the NAB cup next year. I just want to see how he goes at AFL level and he if he plays horribly then put in Trent West in the 2nd round to see if he has improved since his game in round 3 this year. I don't remember round 3 last year very well (it was a long time ago) so i will need to see West again at the start of the year and i have NEVER seen Dawson play so i would really like to see it.

We need either Trent or Dawson to stand up next year and the NAB cup will give us the perfect chance to see which of them will do better at that level of football.

I don't see us being able to go all of next year without needing our 3rd ruckman for some games.

ATM that is about right, but one thing we internet experts haven't learned is that Geelong's official motto has been changed to 'in Wells WE TRUST!' after 2007.

If Wells saw something in Dawson then I'm willing to wait two or three years..

Is Dawson like completely unco or does he just not know what a football looks like? I haven't seen him play at all so i am completely oblivious but people don't seem to think to much of him.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

Must be West, ahead of Simpson. From what I've seen of the VFL team, Simpson is not necessarily a spud for life but no way is he ready for AFL now. Thus let him develop and if there's an injury to Blake or Ottens, put West in. 2010 will in all likelihood be West's last season unless he shows a heap, so this is the opportunity for us to give him the opportunity to show it.

I just hope McCon doesn't try and send West out today like he did Mummy yesterday...if so I will scream

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

given the late season selections, it's likely hawkins would ruck ahead of west, unless he takes a giant stride as a forward this year

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

i'd have said mitch thorp, maybe. but mitch clarke is worth a lot more than what we couldn't afford to pay mumford

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

I'd like to see us make a play for Mitch Clark.

You must have been on the turps before you wrote this

There's a little thing called the SALARY CAP, which means we couldn't keep Mummy and can't go after Clark.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

I,ve said this before but here it is again.

My Bro in law made last years pilgrimage to skilled from Qld and after seeing Dawson Simpson being bagged right left and centre watched him closely in the reserves game. He came away happy Dawson had what it takes with the usual development.

I saw a lot more bagging this year for the young bloke so when I was able to get down this year I went to see how the young bloke would go. He rucked Vs Cloke (Carlton) and for a half looked very good. Mobile for a huge bloke, won more than his fair share of taps and contested after the ball hit the ground - importantly.

He also just looks athletic as well as huge, see pics above, even though some big blokes who look awkward still do OK (Lade anyone). I went away happy that Wells had used his second round pick well and Dawson should be part of the mix in a couple of years if he works hard.

You should take the time to watch him next time you can........its quite hilarious.

Most people are saying this guy is terrible, but surely he has some talent. We was a member of the Vic Country side in the National Championships. He is made of the right stuff too, he broke his wrist in Round 3 of 2007 and played through the season with it.

When he was drafted it was mentioned by the experts that Dawson was a long term project. Lets not forget the guy is only 20 years old, and most ruckman don't come on until there 22-23.

I only got to see a few VFL games this year but managed to keep up with a lot of the reports. From what i have seen there is no doubt that Trent West is an AFL standard player. He gives a good counter option to the Mobile Talls being played in the ruck by opposition like Brisbane and Essendon. Not the best in traditional ruck sense, but definitely has a lot more ability to find the football and more importantly be effective with his positioning. West will get game time next year as their is no way in hell we can expect Otto to play a full season.

Dawson Simpson is coming along, a bit slowly, but for someone his size he gives us the option to dominate some games against teams like Hawthorn, Collingwood and Richmond who have no rucks....Was encouraged by a few comments saying he is finally grabbing the ball well in marking contests. Looks cumbersome, but has an athletic streak in him that i think will bode well for the future. Would be interesting to see in NAB cup...also get the feeling he is well liked down at the club amongst the players.

Mark Blake is also an AFL standard ruckman. His grand final was excellent and he is slowly slowly developing more composure around the ground. Lets not forget he is only 23 still. I think this year could be his breakout - just like Jolly who was pretty crap at Melbourne and came good around the 24 year mark...think Blake will be similar. Actually he is quite exceptional at the actual ruckwork, we all know it is just his coordination and determination around the contest that is letting him down. Still, he has prooved extremely durable which is more than we can say about Otto and King!

I think we are well placed in the big man department, Mumford would have been awesome to keep, but reality is we get another stab at another 2nd round player which could be very handy considering our salary cap and the fact that next years draft is going to be extremely compromised.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

West will be the backup, I think the use of Hawkins worked a little bit, but we need to go with West.

The big Dawk will be ok in a few years, just go to learn to get to the contest a lot more. His disposal is pretty awkward, however, it took guys like Sandilands a long time to get up there. Here's hoping the DS will get a little way there this year. Like everyone, the kid is 203cm and 20yo, has a lot of years ahead of him and if he can get it right, we will have a dominant ruck in about 3 years or so with him getting better and better as each year goes on.

I agree with a few others, no matter if you dislike Blake and the way he plays, he is extremely durable and has played most games for us over the past 2 years when we needed it most.
