If Shiel wanted to come, then we will need to pay a top draft pick for him, there's no going around that. Could be #1 or next year's 1st but I doubt they'd accept a bunch of 2nd rounders.

They have SC problems and we can make a very tasty offer to DS. They need to start solving their SC problem this year - not next year. DS would be in their thoughts as a potential player they could let go, because he demands a big remuneration and so his departure would have a meaningful impact on their SC issues. He can be replaced by younger players already on their list as they have a glut of midfielders. Coniglio and Kelly and now Whitfield would be more integral to their core midfield than DS. It will take a decent pick, but I believe that GWS would be willing to take a slight haircut pick-wise, if it meant that they solved their SC

Betts back to the Blues hey.. personally, I don't think it will happen.
The only logical reason behind it would be that the club see's him moving into Andrew Walker's role and mentoring Garlett, Samo, Pickett, Le Bois, Penrith and any future indigenous players we draft or join the NB's..

Shiel for next years 1st

It has merit. The option of DS in 2019 v 2020 . If we got DS this year and still kept our #1 pick , that would make us immediately look much more attractive to Gaff, who would be looking at the midfield group that he would have to operate in. From Gaffs perspective, he would be surrounded by Cripps, DS, Dow, Fish, Walsh, Murphy, Ed. That is a pretty enticing group to move into, with a range of skills, if a little light on for experience with Dow and Fish.

The big bonus IMO would be that come the end of 2019, any other potential FA eg Kelly , would have had a good look at our maturing midfield, who as a group, I have no doubt would have had an impressive season . So potentially getting DS across the line this year could materially help us snare another 2 quality FA's in Gaff and Kelly.
The fact that we would not have a first round pick in 2019 would be mitigated by the bringing across of Kelly

Dont think Kelly is a FA next year but the point re the flow on benefits of Shiel this year stands.

Interesting how current events may impact on trade week...

Does Rioli's retirement make it more likely that Puopolo will be at Hawthorn next year?
Does Naitanui's injury make it more likely that Lycett will be at WC next year?
Do Dunn and Scharenberg's injuries make it more likely that Moore will be at Collingwood next year?
Does Johnson's injury make it more likely that Lloyd will be at Sydney next year?

As for Shiel, I'm very cynical about any rumours at this time of year. Having said that, he was interviewed on 3AW today, and when they asked him about his future, he was not exactly definitive, in a Gibbs-in-trade-week-last-year-like way. He could have knocked it on the head categorically, but didn't.

If we could do 1 for 6 and Cerra and then turn 6 into Shiel and Setterfield, I'd be ok with it.

I wouldn't be OK with that.

SOS would be up for two charges of grand larceny. :p

Upon hearing the Betts rumour, my first reaction was, no way!

It works against our basis for targeting players, and against our commitment towards youth. However, his position would be terrific for what forward pockets we have on our list; Charlie Cameron transformed from a contact shy speedster who liked a goal into a winger with genuine grunt, and he credits Eddie with mentoring him, working with him to bring out his best.

As a playing mentor - akin, ironically enough, to Daisy - Eddie could play for a year or two, steadily being overtaken but providing mentorship and someone to put pressure on the youngsters to try and displace him.

My second reaction was, surely they didn't!

Surely Adelaide weren't so stupid as to structure his contract in such a way that he's still getting a considerable amount of money, however many years into his contract as he is. Betts would then move into an area Silvagni has targeted plenty of times before, and probably will still need to target before the next two years is up; salary cap dump. We know Adelaide's cap is tight, from statements made about McGovern and from other stuff. Surely they weren't that stupid!

Then I remember. Justin Reid.

I'm trying to avoid getting my hopes up, but Eddie would at the very least be a worthy addition to the list for a year. If his contract is signed for two, but SOS wants him to transition into coaching on the second season, then that isn't too much of an issue; work with Eddie and his family (and his manager) and find an outcome which leads to him either getting paid out or retiring early/halfway through his second year, and then transitioning to becoming a coach.

If the Eddie bluemour is true, then I think we might choose Rankine.

Also a plus for the indigenous players we have ... Pickett, SPS, Garlett, Lebois, Jones ...

In regards to Rankine, apparently he is definitely open to joining Carlton.
Carlton have apparently expressed a very strong interest in drafting him. (Source is a Rankine family member)

Not sure how reliable the info is.

If this does have any truth to it, hopefully it means we are trading pick 1 down to pick 3 with Gold Coast which includes Will Brodie and some later pick swaps.

Gold Coast get Lukosius and Walsh with picks 1 & 2
Carlton get Rankine with pick 3 and Will Brodie.
Not bad.... Still want Walsh and Rankine ...

Can tell you that I've heard that the Betts rumor has some legs to it.

Stone the flaming Crows but Betts contract was never front loaded. If anything, it's put them under increased pressure.

What is it exactly that you think that website is?

He'd think that it's a resource to hire actors to speak to the media in the aftermath of traumatic events.

Anyone who spends more than a momentary glance at the site will understand that they're specially trained actors who can play the roles necessary for military, police, fire, etc. to carry out high level drills that regular actors just aren't trained to do.

I'm used to the rumours. But I'm also in touch with reality as well and in reality there's no way Shiel has told GWS he wants to leave at this stage.

If you know this as fact then state how you know it, otherwise its just your opinion. Continuing to write it doesn't make it any truer.
