To be absolutely fair, not all recruiters get it right, not all recruiters can tell whether players will make the jump from junior/state league to AFL... Matthew Wright admittedly down on input at the moment had been a fantastic pick up for nothing, Kerridge was a good pick up (correct me if I’m wrong but I think for nothing). These guys aren’t best 22 and aren’t future role players but I tell you what they make our VFL team a lot better and gives some of the young kids a chance to improve. The club has publicly stated they have recruited mature players to help fill gaps in certain age brackets of the team.. they never said they were going to be messiahs but blokes like Mullet, O’Shea aren’t best 22 but they give our VFL team a good boost... which allows an opportunity for the young kids to develop in a side that can get their hands on the footy and compete..

Our side has been battered with injury all year, we’re playing and have been forced to bring a lot of players back from injury underdone or with no preseason... and kids like Dow & O’Brien who in most cases would have been given time to develop in a forward pocket or flank have been thrust into full time spots in the Midfield alongside blokes who have been crippled by injury/no preseason ala Murph, Kreuzer, Kennedy and with the loss of Gibbs... not to mention rotations of Docherty, Williamson, Marchbank (who played more towards Centre ground in the JLT)

There’s a reason we are where we are... I don’t want a quick fix I’ve said it numerous times on here.. have some faith in this team and what they are building it’ll take another few years but you expect to show a bit more towards mid/end of next season!
Good write up. Respect the thought put into it.

I agree with everything you said. I also don’t want a quick fix. Which is why I think we should hit the draft again. I originally wanted sheil this year but after seeing where we really are at, it would be a waste of his prime to take him now when we have a lot more holes to fill.

Actually Carlton promised Boek they would redraft him which is why he stayed on at the club and kept training. An hour before the rookie draft deadline the club rang him and said they were going to let him go. Did not even give him an opportunity to look elsewhere.
Where have you heard this?

Silvagni also thought Shaw and O’Shea were good pick ups so I wouldn’t hang my hat on that.

I don't think regularly missing 5 of our ideal back 6 and several of the back ups was part of the plan when we recruited O'Shea! He and Shaw are VFL depth, and without O'Shea we'd have Glass-McCasker in the 1s...

Actually his attitude was not poor at all. Why would anyone with a poor attitude get dropped then go back to the VFL and pick up 30/40 possessions regularly . There is far more to the Boekhurst story that people either refuse to believe or just do not know. I actually thought he had a bit to offer and showed it in the Sydney and Hawks games of 2017. Seeing as how now we struggle for goals and polish in our team i thought he would of been worth another year. He was actually quicker over 20 meters than Pickett is. I think the boy just needed a fair go and some backing from certain people within the club.

I agree. He was showing a bit.

That said, no-one else picked him up, so there must be more to it than simple form.

From the family. There is a lot more to it than has just been thrown around .
That is poor if true.
I really wish we kept him though. As much as people disagree, I don’t think it was a lack of effort. I think he was a confidence player and needed the support of the club. I could be wrong but it always seemed like he was more harshly judged than other players due to being a high pick and such. If we picked him at 60 I think he would still be on the list.

It is frustrating because being a confidence player it looked like he was starting to get his feet wet in his last 3 games. Almost like it clicked. Could be wrong but will always be left wondering now. Oh well

Actually every time he was dropped over the years he always went back to the VFL and busted his gut which is more than i can say for others we have now. He always busted his gut and when he finally got given an opportunity due to mass injuries he proved himself. So if saying contract year satisfies your dislike for him then so be it. There is always 2 sides to every story.

I agree with him busting his gut. He really looked like he wanted to make it. Makes me sad

Did not mean to direct that at you by the way! Just happened to follow on from your post, and had been holding that in for too long haha!

As i said before mate they promised to pick him up which is why he still trained at the club after being de-listed . An hour before the end of the draft they rang him and told him they will not be taking him. Had no opportunity to look elsewhere as was under the impression he was wanted.

Is that fair dinkum?

Poor form that if true,

Expectation based on what though... we’ve done nothing to justify any expectation whatsoever...
There were quite a few people here that thought Carlton had a good chance of beating Brisbane. Same goes for Freo before the game.

Is that the same Boekhorst that posted on instagram from a music festival in Perth on a sunday when pre-season started first thing monday morning?

The same guy that turned up to training the next day? But there is rules for some and rules for others.

That's ignoring why we changed our mind...

That is absolutely fair dinkum. Its the reason he stayed on and trained. SOS hated him. SOS never liked him from the moment SOS walked back through the door.
If SOS hated him why would he delist him then offer him the the chance to do preseason with the promise of being picked back up?

If you are fighting for your place on a AFL list do you think going to a music festival 3000kms away the day before preseason sends the right message that you are fair dinkum?
