This shows the bind we are in. If he has to choose between us and the Bombers he probably picks the Bombers because he likely sees them in contention next year. Not happy to read he was an Essendon fan which probably doesn’t help.
Then he says to himself...

"How ******* good would it be to play next to cripps and be kicking it to charlie a H".

Game over

Theseus’s paradox.

Four dimensional question that probably resolves itself as how does the shovel self-identify.
Except I view Hawthorn as a means to solving the paradox.

Is this intineration of Hawthorn, playing more or less the same gameplan as when they won their last flag, having exchanged key members of the team out for younger or more individually brilliant models, the same version as the one before? I'd argue absolutely not, as they aren't as clinical, aren't as team oriented, and definitely aren't as good.

When promoting a player as a goal kicking midfielder, its not right to say Shiel is one of them. 5 goals from 19 games this year with a 20% scoring accuracy. Yes thats 1 year. Other years arent much better though...

He is an elite outside mid link man who can sometimes get his own ball. He has a higher turn over percentage than ed curnow with practically idential disposals per game.

I rate him! Want him. But he has flaws and isn't what you would call a goal kicking mid.

As stated earlier, unless a mid spends extended time forward, most top end, true midfielders average less than a goal a game, Neale, Cotchin, Shuey, Kelly. Shiel wins close to 40% of his disposals as contested ball, so I wouldn't classify him as purely outside, turnovers are also similar, so he sits comfortably among the players I mentioned.

It seems a few people of late are downgrading him as a player. Is that because they would prefer him as a FA next year? Perhaps lets split the conversation, how he rates as a player, compared to his cohorts and then what is a viable cost, whether that be this year or next

Essendon-supporting colleagues are very confident this morning that Shiel is on his way to them - a 'done deal', in principle.

Not sure what's happened (if anything) to lead to this, other than someone cleverly linking him to his mate Devon Smith, and putting two and two together, etc.
Maybe we are trying to get him free next year...

Pure media hype from what I can gather..

Well.. some may want to downgrade him. Ill supply the facts.

Id love him on our team. Pick 1 and something back. No. This year a pick between 10-15. Yes. Will that get it done. Probably not. Would i want carlton to reach. No. This is where he is at for me.

If no one picks him up this year and he chooses to leave gws. Would i hope we chase him. Yes. If we miss out will that bother me. No.

I have watched the guy closely since his inception into the afl. I hoped one day he would come to carlton. But as time has gone on, i don't see him how i thought he was. I think the word "elite" gets tossed around a fair bit. To me he is close to elite. Is this because he is playing in a star studded team. Maybe?!? If he came to carlton this year will he look as good as he does at gws. I very much doubt it (potentially not his fault)

Im not runbishing him. I see us being a better side if he came to us this year. I don't believe he is worth the opporrunity at Walsh or Lukosius though.

I would be shocked if he wanted us over them to be honest
Dont know whats been going on behind the scenes, but if the attitude was anything like what some posters here have been showing, then i am not surprised.

"Get him for free next year." If I was Shiel Id be thinking "you dont really want me then".

If we really want him, then go and get him. Stop with this "oh but we have got to get the best deal" bullshit.

Hawthorn "overpaid " for Jaeger. They seem to be doing alright.

shovel may well call a spade a spade......acute personality disorder possibly at play here......

I hear you - but talk of Fasolo (who cannot even get on the park) and Roughhead (32 FFS) do not inspire much confidence we are really doing a proper rebuild. Plus another old Hawks player (Poppy?) makes it sound like our kids won't get much game time at all next year.

We are going to the draft and trading but the other clubs are too. Hawks got O'Meara, Mitchell and Warpol into their midfield last year. We got Kennedy, Dow and LOB. They get greater immediate impact - so it is very hard to catch up.

We hired Bolton as a development coach - It is slow and tedious - so we are all frustrated. All we have is small signs like McKay starting to blossom.

But if we change streams now and stifle our kids development then we really are a joke. Would prefer young kids losing and improving (like GWS did) than old blokes giving us their best - but still losing.

I disagree. we need players who can actually play at the level to support the youngsters. if the best we can do is Roughead, Puopolo and those types then so be it. if it makes us competitive in the short term while our young crop mature to that 24 - 27 age bracket I'm all for it.

right now we have Rowe, Ed Curnow, O'Shea, Kerridge, Graham and Mullett as those older heads and they are I'm just going to come out and say it - Spuds of the highest order who are a liability on the football field with ball in hand and they are the ones who are slowing this rebuild down not the kids. The club may have finally worked this out and if the best we can do is attract 28 year olds or older who can actually bloody well play then so be it. Come on down anyone who is proven at AFL level and can support our kids. Doing nothing but feeding the kids to the wolves with the above mentioned cast is not working.

Pick 10 and a 2nd rounder. I wouldnt really call that overpaying. Id do that for shiel and he is 4 years older. But overpaying that is not
