Oh the poor dears , that must be intolerable for them .
FFS , what's happening to society ...
Try taking some bloody responsibility for yourself !!

Ok, so many blokes in their 20's do you know that earn an average of $250k a year and have hours during the day to themselves.

.........and, due to drafting, they are often away from family and support.

I agree they should take responsiblity and I don't want a ban on gambling but at the moment the flood of betting advertising on ALL media is unhealthy.

So earning $250k a year and having lots of free time is now a problem ??
Can't believe I'm hearing this ...

No offence Red Bull but there's a lot more involved in the insidious nature of gambling than just losing a few bob.

An addiction is an addition and it can come upon you sooner than you may think.........and not just for football players...........but this being a football forum and where we discuss players..........

Where did he say that they shouldn't take responsibility? I think you like to be contrary just cos.

The reality is, you've got 18 year olds moving states, getting huge incomes, and having very little financial education. The least the club could do is hook them up with financial advisors and teach them how to manage their income for the future. It's up to the individual after that...but gambling addictions are a snowball of trouble. You bet a little bit, you lose some, you get a nice win...oh that feels good! I'll do it again, and again, and again...

Interesting. I remember Parkin used to bang on about the importance of study and/or learning something completely outside of the game, though spare time is probably limited for these guys. It seems to be the ones who don't take that advice on board that get into trouble. Unfortunately we aren't likely to have our choice of prime sponsors for a few years, so taking the high moral line on gambling is difficult.

Are you trying to evoke sympathy or simply amplify Red Bull's point? :p

I'm saying there are reasons why these guys have issues with gambling.
They earn more money than most of us, and they have more spare time than most of us as well.

With all due respect Harker , let me just say that you don't know me .
I'll leave it at that ...

No I don't and not sure what that has to do with anything.

Not really wanting to take this into a philosophical discussion but I feel we'll recognize gambling being marketed the way it is being done so for now and we'll likely get the brakes put on it (rightly or wrongly, but that's for another philosophical discussion) No different to tobacco or alcohol.

Maybe just might be wiser to hold back on the lectures without knowing anything about the people , their backgrounds and their experiences .
It's often ill advised to assume ...

O.K. and in simple terms. I don't like the fact that some of our players have gambling habits because I'm selfish and would sooner they were putting their energies towards the game and winning for the club they're deriving their income from, as opposed to the next 'win' they'll attain via a punt.

............and you think you're the only person that's ever had a habit of any sort? Come on.

Are you kidding?

They have a social punt together on Saturdays and it means they are not focusing on winning for the club they 'derive their income from'?

To borrow a racing phrase, give us a spell.

You see Harks ... again you assume .
I have no habit or addiction of any sort (Carlton aside) and never have had .
That's not to say one cannot have knowledge of and experience in these matters ...

Let's stick to the footy ...
