Would like to see L.Whitfield at Carlton - genuine speed/execution skills a skinny gun in the mould of a few of the Hawthorn types - is a starting 18 player for GWS. Happy to see the Club consider Patton - Levi and he would monster Clubs - but a Lynch he isn't and won't be - more a traditional gorilla power forward. Patton was #1 forward for GWS before injuries.

Mitchel is probably trade bait from Sydney - expensive and (finally) being given a run in their firsts. Better mid than any we have except Cripps - but seriously that isn't saying much - he isn't a game breaker or match winner himself. Sydney need to cover for Richards and Grundy possible retirements they will be looking to pick up someone like - Hurley, if Hurley really wishes to leave. SO I figure Mitchell may be used as part of trade there.

There are two possible gun mids to come out of Suns - one has a bad history with injury but could be as good as Cripps - the other is extremely talented but not the talented monster we might like to pair up with Cripps - more a classy outside game breaker.

If a trade can be made for Patton & Whitfield & Tomlinson it would be a master class in list rebuilding by SOS - I doubt Whitfield won't be wanted at GWS. We would STILL be missing at least one gun mid to play with Cripps - but forward line and wings would be set at Carlton with developed experienced and very good players.

Challenge is making sure we have enough 'currency' to do a fair deal by parties involved. A high pick for two downgrades makes sense in a rebuild - if the potential targeted draftees are there.

Everyone is on the Gibbs trade bandwagon ( well almost everyone) but only a contender would be interested really - and that limits where Gibbsy might be happy to go - remember he is a contracted player. I'd pretty much expect Gibbs to maybe consider a return to Adelaide - going to GWS ...doubt it. I don't know how much 'press' a Club can use to force a trade with a contracted player tbh - personally I don't like doing business like that anyway - a mutually agreed deal - well that is fine.

The OTHER way to think about Gibbsy is - what IF his natural position is HBF or creative HF - who do we have that is a better option than Bryce in those positions right now? I'd prefer to have other HB or mid defenders capable of moving to genuine on ball each way runnning game - than put it all on Gibbs and say ..perform there or out.

As much as we all sometimes like to point at a bloke and say well he should have been a much better player - is it Gibb's fault that maybe - just maybe he is playing to the best of his ability already? Gibbs didn't pick himself as #1 draft pick neither did Murph or Kreuze.

For mine - a safer way to continue rebuild is to get the players we need in and develop them - and right now - we need 1-2 genuine gun midfielders to add to Cripps both should be able to play inside and outside games. Forwards? hmmm I am in the camp of them being easier to get than not. If Patton / Tomlinson rumour is true - question becomes how do we pay for them as well as having left overs for a couple of mids?

Just on Tom Mitchell, is the fact that our coaching relationship with his father ended in such bad terms (and it wasn't Barry's fault at all, it was Graham Smorgon and his board of idiots that chose to treat him and Pagan as fools) count against us recruiting him ?

Anyhow in terms of trades, unless the Swans desperately need points from picks for their academies, I don't see how we can meet their high trade demands for Mitchell (they would probably ask for our first pick which of course we will refuse)

I would guess that recruiting Mitchell would be a long shot at this point in time.

Besides his B & F year Gibbs has always played his best footy behind the ball.

Murph plays with far more flair and freedom when in the forward half.

Reckon we've missed the boat on Tomlinson, just watch for a silly club like St Kilda come up and offer a first rounder for AT and The Giants snap it up.

I've gone cold on AT myself. The Giants won't always be generous trading partners, they absolutely fleeced Collingwood for Treloar. Think we should look elsewhere now or via the draft, quite frankly.

I've gone cold on AT myself. The Giants won't always be generous trading partners, they absolutely fleeced Collingwood for Treloar. Think we should look elsewhere now or via the draft, quite frankly.

I'm a bit the same. Tomlinson hasn't shown much at AFL level in a while. Maybe there's reasons for it and maybe SOS knows him well enough to be confident he will 'break out', but for us mugs on the sidelines I can't really see a reason to pay anything significant to get him to our club.

Our no 1 recruiting target should be Lachie Neale, a tough competitive beast. Generally speaking, I'd like us to now concentrate on adding some cream and class to our midfield, that add best, can be described as workmanlike, but lacks a general match winner who can tear a game apart in bursts.

I think C.Curnow is looking like a good selection, so we were probably lucky GWS rejected our trade for Tomlinson, as we found a similar player.

In terms of long term build I agree Tomlinson is only worth pick #20-40 to us now as he is not critical to our best 22, but would still really like Tomlinson at CFC if we can get a fair deal.

Weitering has started strongly but Schache was very very good for a skinny Young CHF on Saturday.

Why are people interested in trading our next year first pick? Every chance it will be 1-4. Patton has major injury concerns and Tomlinson isn't worth anything better than pick 20.

Not sure anyone thinks Tomlinson is a 4-5 goal a game forward. His strength is, as you said, a second or third tall forward who can play a utility role and move around the ground a little. That's fine and dandy - all teams love that sort of player - but he isn't being very good at it right now. Minimal disposals, minimal score involvements, no goals in 2016, only a handful of marks around the ground.... he's gotta lift his game for me to be excited about getting him in navy blue.

Agree Neale would be a very good get. He is a quality player and I daresay there wouldn't be a team in the comp that would turn down him being in their colours. If the price is right, I'd love to see him come across.

It's getting into list management stuff, but I am more concerned about getting some good mids and ball users in the side. We need someone to win the ball in the clearances to take some of the pressure and attention away from Cripps. It also means when Cripps slides forward for stints, we aren't going to give up 3 out of 4 clearances like we probably do now. We're working on our setups so that others can take the load no doubt, but a genuine A grade mid like Neale or Mitchell would be worth their weight in gold for us going forward. Add some really good ball users and hard runners and we might be pretty well set for a best 22. A KPF would be third on my list given we have CCurnow, McKay and Silvagni. In fact, another developing tall defender would possibly be more prudent.

Seems like all this stuff has been the plan all along though, so happy to sit back and watch SOS pick some talented mids in the draft and see what he can do on the trade table too.

Would have to be a pick wouldn't it? Not sure Freo would want any of our players unless it's Casboult and a pick for something small back and Neale. Surely wouldn't involve a player like Gibbs I would have though - we need to add to our midfield not just swap one-for-one to upgrade.

Not so sure, as Patton has issues with injury and Tomlinson is not breaking out, so we should not give up next years first (which may be #1) for them unless we have a lot of midfield talent in hand. Maybe do this deal next year when GWS have even more KPF talent.

Would prefer we went to the draft and got Battle (a Darling+ upgrade, is at #19+ in some early draft order lists) or Kerr (likely later selection, maybe #37) as a project unless a better deal is available. We need our #1 for a high quality midfielder like SPS, or we should trade it for 2 to get Brodie and Gallucci (or Pepper Powell). Must get quality midfielders this year IMO.

Honestly, the only way we are going to shake Lachie Neale out of Freo is to be a part of some three way trade involving our first round pick and the picks from Freo going to GWS, Lachie Neale coming to Carlton along with a selection of picks from Fremantle and the following happen with GWS

McCarty to Fremantle
Tomlinson and the Collingwood and the GWS first round picks coming to Carlton.

So in the end, GWS ends up with a pick in the 1-3 range along with a good selection of second and third round picks in exchange for McCarthy (Fremantle) and Tomlinson (Carlton).

I want to see what happens this weekend when we play Freo to get an idea of what sort of pick we are going to get... because I feel that Freo are on the tank (even more so now that their captain is sitting out again.. when they were talking about him maybe making the side... Lyon shut it down with an emphatic "no").

I think the key is that SOS knows what GWS want/need, list management wise.

If YOU want a player from another club, the other club will squeeze out as much as you are willing to pay.

If you grab someone that THEY want to offload, they will settle for what is acceptable.

The GWS 4 trade was based off this. Hopefully SOS still has enough knowledge and leverage to organise another mega trade.

Dunno peoples fascination with Neale. While good i think he gets a lot of Freedom at Freo due to Mundy and Fyfe. Cant see that happening at Carlton.

Id rather Prestia, who is a bull of an inside mid with leg speed.

True, it can't have been easy to flourish and reach your potential in the last 10 years at Carlton.

But then you look at Cripps...

He was basically injured his first year and in his second, things got as despondent and dysfunctional as they get at AFL level.

Yet he delivered way beyond expectations.

Maybe Cripps isn't a fair benchmark, but I guess it is possible to get the most of yourself DESPITE the environment...
