I know its late Oct. and in reality there is no game plan because there are no games...but stick with me for a minute.

I dont believe the long kick to a contest game plan suits the Blues. It definitely didnt last year as we didnt have the talent to win the one on ones, and although the trades were great i still dont belive that plan will help us at all.

You gotta luv Pagan but has he got it all wrong and is he open enough to try another game plan that suits the talent at the Blues disposal? I dont think he is!

I think season 2004 will show whether Pagan is on the right track or not.

I don't think season 2003 can be put on him, as he had many, many players "playing" for him who obviously didn't want to. And he knew this.

Next season will be the opposite, and I think we'll suprise a few people ;)

The game plan we have now is way better than the Port/Brittain-Carlton 'kick short' game plan

We have the marking targets up forward (Fev, WHit and Laurie)

I agree, however there must be a game plan that suits our team rather than trying to get the team to suit a game plan. Even with our marking forwards you need the talent/skill to deliver the ball, and make sure that in a one on one, our players get a better than 60% advantage of pulling it down.

Last season (and I understand its history and easy to speculate on) it was normal for our guys just to hurry the ball down field which usually meant ball to boot before a clear decision was made as to where the ball was going.

Dont get me wrong, Im a believer in Pagan and his footy smarts, I just hope he can generate a plan that doesnt look like a 1960s replay.

We have to wait. A game plan to suit our team last year would have been, share it around between a select few and totally ignore the passengers. Not sure how successful that would have been. The team is now different but half the team has been exposed to Denis' game plan so it would almost be habit by now. Just have to work on the newbies to get them up to speed. If we opt to change again, it will once again take time to educate ALL of the players.

Long kicking game depends on having some marking power and Carlton are going to be one of the smaller teams going around now they have traded for ball carriers and given Allan/McKernan away, French is useless.
Unless they get some bigger marking players they will have to go back to a game plan where they hang on to the ball and that usually ends up with over use and mistakes.
Pagan may have fixed some of the midfield problems but has created a list that looks like snow white and the seven dwarfs and the long kicking plan wont work.

Go Roos in 2004

We went from the team with the most disposals per goal in 2002 to the team with the least per goal in 2003. Maybe..just maybe we can now show some versatility, having more players who really want to be there and believe they are going somewhere will be infectious and we will show something in the first 4 rounds next year.

Fev really stepped up last year, 63 goals is phenomenal considering his inconsistency in past years. I'd expect a lot more attention to be given to him next year.

That is - will Whitnall be given the no.1 defender each week this year? I wouldn't expect so. This year surely is make or break for big Lance. If he returns to somewhere near his magical years of 1999/2000, we'll have two big guns up forward, when some teams can't even find one.

That said, Parkin said on talking footy that delivery to Lance is a big part of his game, and in 2000 we had campo, ratten, bradley and the koutaman delivering the ball to him on a dime again and again. I don't think bombing it on his head is the ideal plan.

Thats if he plays forward anyway (which i sincerely hope he does). Hopefully Livo can hold down FB, and I think we're all pretty confident in the Thornbirds abilities to play CHB.
