Agree...thats why I said income from games at various ground is similar enough (depending on ticketing prices) to make it irrelevant. KP has been a venue for a final in the past so I'm not sure it's an impossibility for the future. But I'm not suggesting that anyway...I'm just saying that final venues is a discussion that I would like to be involved with.

Agree with this too...but are all venues equable to both sets of fans. I felt it was for hawks cats games and the home ground advantage was nominal only. I'm not sure it is for all grounds, e.g. Adelaide, and if not, the advantage should go to the higher placed team. I'm enjoying the discussion! I don't want to make this about the tigers/cats (as we both agree - well done to the tigers) but it would have been interesting to witness what happened if it was a hawks/tigers game with the hawks the higher placed finals team. Did we witness a seismic shift in crowd influence on Friday night, was it a transference of what has been occurring in Adelaide for a while or was it a once off? Don't pretend to know the answers but I think it needs a rational discussion!

I don't exactly know what it was... could have been the "home ground" controversy, Dusty resigning, belief of the Richmond fans they could finally remove their finals monkey off the back, really anything. But it was an atmosphere so powerful and seemingly influential that right from the moment the cats came out it seemed a hostile environment for them (in a safe way). I've not seen so many fans leave 5 minutes into the 4th quarter ever.

Tbh with Richmond only playing at the MCG now, its that kind of momentum and influence that they could very well ride to a premiership!

Yep maybe....but teams are pretty good at adjusting too and will possibly handle the atmosphere better! Also I would be surprised if the crowd had the same influence grand final day. Hard for me to add anything to the discussion as I was not there but from what I've read it appears something's changed! I've tried not to make this discussion about the tigers and cats but previously I believed that all Geelong finals should be played at the "G" as it is a "neutral" venue. By Richmond doing so well off the ground (Selwood asked to call the toss as the "visiting" captain, the drums, the scoreboard "roar" after a goal, tiges having their home rooms, the number and fanaticism of their supporters etc) I'm not so sure it felt neutral. Again well done to the tigers for making it so but it has made me question if Geelong, as the higher placed team, should have been made to play there. Just my own personal thoughts and I don't expect anyone to agree or disagree with me. It's also possible that it was due to Geelong's own supporters slackness and it was a once off! Anyway, I don't really expect Geelong to get another home final until the final stadium upgrade is completed in 4/5 years and we'll have much more evidence to make an informed decision then!

I think it completely zapped Geelong of their confidence, they couldn't build any momentum at all...
They were just not mentally up to it, from the moment they walked out to the cacophony of boo's drowning out whatever sound the Geelong fans were making to the incredibly loud cheers for any Richmond goal/good play.
Thats not taking away from Richmond's performance at all which was terrific, it just helped enhance it imo!

Not much of an increase... Unfortunately for Geelong I think its going to be a pretty similar state of affairs... "Home state finals" against clubs where 90k+ crowds could be pulled will always be at the MCG (Richmond, Hawthorn, Collingwood, Essendon etc), interstate low crowd drawing clubs you will get at KP.

Realistically the list of clubs you could play KP finals against are probably Fremantle, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Adelaide and GWS.. MAYBE West Coast...

I'm OS at the moment and couldn't be there so I can only go on what I've seen/heard. Firstly I think it's hard, probably impossible, to seperate the booing from cheering and other crowd input so I'm not one who necessarily believes booing impacted the game. I also need to stress that Richmond were the better team and deserved their victory and agree that the cats weren't good enough on the night. I guess what I'm thinking is that Richmond ended up with the home ground advantage and I suspect most people in football would argue that's helpful. A number of Richmond players acknowledged the crowd's importance after the game. Regarding umpiring the Richmond coach talked about the bias, in general terms, a home team gets from the umpire after the Geelong game (I can't remember the fancy term he used) so he believes it has an impact, but to be honest I disagreed with him then and I don't think Richmond got any advantage on Friday due to the crowd. Statistics certainly suggest the home team is more likely to win. So to summarise I do think the home team has an advantage but it's really difficult to quantify how much (it probably varies a lot) and to determine what parts of the many individual components that make us this advantage have the greatest impact. It may be nothing to do with the crowd...it may simply be knowing the ground better. Not a helpful answer I know!

Its fine, but it makes your supporters look classless. And considering the reports of abuse and aggression in the crowd, it stacks up to make your supporters look like poor sports and will lead to people giving your fans a lot of shit if you lose in the Prelim or GF. So you basically have to hope you win or you will cop it.

I live. Geelong and go to the Geelong Bulldogs games at Kardinia Park. We call it boo-park in our family, the Geelong crowd just boos all night. Even the umpires when they were getting the better deal.

Crowd numbers are important but I'm not convinced they should override everything else. Maybe teams (if higher placed) could nominate at the beginning of the year where they want to play their finals. So Hawks could nominate Tassie for Elimination or Qualifying but the G for semis and prelims. Arguably good for football but not so good for the Hawks fanbase! Anyway as I said I'm just starting to rethink some stuff and will probably need to see some more games over a couple of seasons before I come to any conclusions.

On Friday night when geelong ran out onto the ground the boos that reverberated around the mcg was something most had never heard before. It was like the cats were an interstate side as the boos drowned out any cheering from their fans. The boos continued throughout the night when they kicked the ball into play and on other occasions throughout the night. While the roar of the tiger army was something to behold I reckon the booing was something I've never heard before on that scale.
Where do people sit on this? I've heard lots of complaints from cats fans and even heard a tiger supporter on 3AW tonight say she didn't like it.
I for one liked it, it made for a very intimidating experience for the cats players and who knows may have effected some of them especially the younger ones.
I imagine it will happen again in the prelim to the Giants or eagles so what do people think? To boo or not to boo?

I dont think booing a team onto the field is a great thing to do, but it's not a huge faux pas. In game it's fine but there are limits. Cheering injuries for example lacks class.
We can only speak of our experiences. I was at the G for our H/A game and I het a crowd of 33k on a rainy Sunday afternoon is a bit different. We were in a veey small minority and couldn't avoid Tiger supporters.
My experience was no problem though. They booed Toby and every umpiring decision that didn't go their way, but that's what supporters do.
I was certainly comfortable at the ground, and am not comcerned going to the G if we happen to make the PF.
I do get 90k members of the Tiger army will be more feral at a final, but logging on early.to get a tkt would be more my concern, and I look forward to experiencing the atmosphere first hand if it happens.

There is this thing called silencing the crowd. Geelong just didn´t turn up and played like pussies for most of the game.
The booing should have fired them up. They should have collectively said right we´ll show these idiots and slammed on 4 goals
before Richmond knew what was going on. That would have left them shell shocked. Well done Tiger fans, this game is about passion and supporting you team hard. Geelong fans should be as as vocal as they can without being dicks against Sydney this week. It´s the finals not the JTL Community series.

The day Hawthorn play a final in Tasmania is the day they are no longer Hawthorn... will never happen. I think the current system although not perfect is the best we are going to get in the current circumstances.

That said, it didn't bother me at the game other than thinking it was dumb. Booing Dangerfield's baby pre-game and booing Brad Ottens I thought were the marks of a classless group but winners are grinners, aye? Well this is a novel way to make home ground advantage even more intimidating. Geelong's Simonds Stadium has always been a fortress for opposing teams and now the Cats have come up with a plan to make the venue even more menacing.
