Thats good news. Just out of interest has there ever been a good AFL player come out of the APY lands? I have no doubt there could be talent, but I dont think it is a very populous place so there may not be many kids the right age and talent to succeed.

Quite a few have come from Alice Springs (or the settlements in the surrounding areas)...

The milera boys should count.

How many of the mallee park products came from apy first? I don't know, just wondering if anyone can answer.

Do we get first pick of the talent? If the AFL was serious about bringing more Aboriginal kids into the game then the most effective pathway would be to give all clubs an area of Australia that has rural Aboriginal kids to have in an Academy and then they get first option at a reduced rate. Just watch how many kids get a go.

Was this the massive news that Rowie claimed was going to be a massive farewell present to the club from Trigg ?

So does anyone know what is the actual benefit (if any) there will be for the Crows from this ?

I'm all for the club being involved and these kind of programs are fantastic for aboriginal kids/teens. But I do agree, how will this partnership and these funds assist us in winning our next flag.

Good on them for doing what they can, but $300k is not exactly huge news. If our revenue had increased over the last decade at the same rate as the rest of the competition, we wouldn't even need to bother the govt, we could just write a cheque.

I guess rowie was right about port always using the me too line given they got the same grant... and both clubs announced it in the same APY community today.... although he was probably wrong about thus bring triggs parting gift and a massive commercial win etc...

History will say that we went to Brisbane, triggs last, and stuck it up every basterd we could.

this is all it needs to be about, this is all it should be about. Very nice work.

I have no problem with the announcement, my issue is that it doesn't even come remotely close to the lofty heights that Rowe was promising on Monday.

Rowe promised that Trigg was going to deliver some massive blockbuster news for the club, it was apparently one of the the main reasons why he was still working with the club and this was going to a massive parting present to the club.

This is a fantastic piece of work by Bunj and the AFC.

Having been up to the APY many times for work, I can only hope our young blokes and club staff get plenty of chances to head up and check out the communities and people.

Whether or not this helps us win a flag is irrelevant.

PS - Any AFC news = massive news according to Rowey. Surely we all know this by now?

I'm not sure I understand this.

If it is funding targeted at community development, aren't there organisations that are better resourced to deliver it than a footy club?

Why does a footy club get this funding? It seems a long way away from our core business.

Because McLeod runs the program under the AFC banner. The club just provides facilities and some staff. McLeod wants more kids to see sport as a pathway to a healthy lifestyle etc. And just to do something good for a disadvantaged and marginalized group of kids.

Unbeknownst to alot, Australia is criticized heavily in the UN for the treatment of the sovereign owners. Sometimes we need to do things to show were trying to react in a humanitarian way towards, what are, a displaced race/people. This is right place right time thing, this "investment".

I suppose some of you would relate to the royal commission into child abuse, how thats only PR exercise seeking to uncover as little as it can, as quietly as it can.

Its unfortunate that raiding communities of their young men so they can make us money, make rich city folk money. Its unfortunate that is seen as humanitarian. When if there wasn't money involved, if clubs, sponsors and media didn't make money. SFA would be involved in this.

But I suppose, if we're not going to address the real issues for kids in the outback and communities, which there are many, all a shocking indictment on our culture, we can get a very small % into clubs, I mean a very small. Its better than none?

I agree with much of what you're saying here.

But you should really give it a read and tidy up the grammar, because it's REALLY hard to understand what you're really trying to say.

As Port have now lost the Eyre Peninsula I really wanted the AFC to do some work over here with our Aboriginal kids, however, it seems the APY lands are the area they want to concentrate on.

There's a handful of ex-pat Port supporters in Ceduna/Lincoln/Whyalla/Cummins/etc, but there is so much Red Yellow and Blue that it's just preaching to the choir for a lot of the kids. Plus I think cementing them into a "I want to play for Crows only mentality" is against what the Government, AFL, Bunj and hopefully even Adelaide are interested in. The goal is to close the gap, not pick up players.

Not sure where you're from but the majority of the Eyre Peninsula is strongly Port Power and Crows supporters are the minority by a long way, partly due to the huge amount of work Port has done over here and also the history of the EP being a Port district, if the Crows did half as much as Power do over here the supporter base may grow and who knows somewhere down the track they may attract some players as a bonus. If you think they are closing the gap {something I believe in strongly} by visiting occasionally I'm not so convinced, work closely with schools and health clinics then they may be on a better path.
