What are everyone's thoughts on drafting bottom age players with late draft picks in the view that they may be a dearer buy in a year's time? When I say late I refer to picks after 50 or 60.

It's happpened a lot in the last few years. Last year Cameron Wight and Lochlan Veale were two of the more obvious pinch hits from clubs. The previous year Dane Swan was probably one. Melbourne took Daniel Breese as one about three years ago.

No doubt they will happen this year, so who are the late longshots that will be picked? I put two of them in my phantom draft from memory being Jordan Lewis and Ronnie Davis. In saying that there are quite a few who could bob up.

Reckon you can pick the shock bottom age selection in this year's draft?

Daniel Batson, a 201cm ruckman would be worth gambling on, happened last year with Cam Wight.

I like Ron Davis and Ben Jolley as good steals from next year's draft.

Josh Willoughby is higher profile but he could fit the category come draft day.

Heath Grundy the SA CHB/FB would be another I'd consider. Basically anyone who is playing Div 1 at the under-18 champs and is a bottom ager has to be come into calculations.

We got Adam Schneider that way, I suspect. He didn't turn 19 until May in his second season, so does that make him a bottom-age pick? We got him at pick 60, and obviously he's worth a lot more than that now.

Schneider really built his reputation as an under-16 when he won the Div 2 medal at the Under-16 Carnival. His form in the under-18s was good and he made the TAC team of the year, but he was just one of a dozen rovers that year. He was really recruited on the basis of that early under-16 form.

Also true rovers are often 'priced' much lower than other player-types. When you remember that the likes of C.Fletcher and J.Johnson are rookie list players, 60 is not such a bargain ... more about the right price for a 2nd-tier rover. Even the absolute elite (Schammer - 16, Rodan - 33) don't tend to go too high.

My Mate Josh Sampsons 1 to look out for next year...still only 16 and has made the SA under 18 acadamy, and should make the trip to MELB

I like the chances of Luke Peel from Sandringham Dragons. Any club who picks him up this year will be using their choice wisely. For Luke is a player that is he remains in the mix for they draft another will sure enough be looking at a first round maybe even top ten selection. He is a ready made player, had a solid carnival with Vic Metro and represented Aus Under 17's in Ireland under the AIS football scholarship program.

Interesting that a lot of phantom drafts have him going to the Roos with Pick 24.

Do people know something that the rest of us don't?
