I just had a thought. I mean bowden honestly isnt suited out of the midfield as he does his so called baulks and mostly gets caught. But i think it would be a good move. He has pretty good height for a midfield and could have the same role as chaffey as an attacking defence player. He could rebound out of the defensive 50 and set up play. At least he will be settled here. What are ur opinionS?

Bowden doesn't come across as the most accountable of players at the best of times. Maybe a move into the backline will force this upon him - it has worked wonders with players such as Akermanis and Johnson.

Still, very few midfielders have the luxury of a set position; they must be rotated through to maintain an attacking presence. Bowden must be part of this rotation, especially as a ruck-rover.

He has played some games off half-back and looked lost. He is not a midfielder but has had to play there to plug holes. Is much maligned because when he plays in the midfield he is not in & under, but he shouldn't have to be. Joel is an elusive, strong overhead, long & straight kicking half forward who is played out of position most of the time IMO.
He is a proven goalkicker in a side that doesn't kick a lot of them, so play him forward.

And from recollection his kicking and decision making once again was poor.

ohh please do we have any football nous on this thread.
Bowden is not in our best 22 because he cannot chase he cannot tackle and he cannot play accountable footy.
i forgot a lot of people like him because he can kick. Thats what is tis all about isnt it? not playing accoutnable footy nah you do not need to do that.
To play him on the backline is to give the oppositition 6 easy goals a game.
Sure he may look good flashing past for a handball but this is not what a backman needs to do
Ohh by i forgot danny is coaching the club and we seem to have similar minded people on this thread.
if he plays back i will tear up my platinum membership
please no

Oh, FFS! I would suggest that I would know more about tactics and strategy than most on this board.

What I do know isL
  1. That Bowden is a player currently on our list
  2. That his potential is to be a top 22 player in the comp
  3. That he has failed to deliver on this potential
  4. That if he was actually settled, he may deliver on this potential
    [/list=1]

He is on our list for another season and there is nothing we can do about it except try and make him the footballer he is capable of.

Bowden should be kept in a forward pocket and ordered to shadow Ottens and Richardson. Trying to turn him into a backman or a midfielder is pure folly.

poetientail is worthless and wasted on those who do not have the heart and opportunity.
i would suggest that bowden is on his last chance. he would not have lasted under a Sheedy or mathews.
it is this put up with them mentallity that paints a poor picture for us in this competition. Others look to us as fools. Bowden would have got dropped long ago at somewhere else. you can get an easy game at richmond...look at Pettifer, houlihans, Fioras....

This isn't as silly as it sounds.
we could use him the way he plays -SPARINGLY!

Who knows,he may even find the intenstinal fortitude required
at the realisation his career has blossomed into the role
of Pine warmer.

Talented -Definitely.
Commited - Definitely not (until now......????.

Frustrating to watch as we are all aware of his natural skills,
unfortunately lazy as a NT afternoon.

I got the feeling from TJ's comments taht we tried to shop Bowden around but noone was interested. Maybe that gave him a kick up the arse that he needed?

What a friggin waste of talent.

Bowden is a frustrating player but if he left Richmond and joined say an Essendon or Brissy,I'm sure Sheeds or Matthews would make a superstar of him(hmmm - a better player for sure.
:D

And if my mum had wheels, she'd be a bloody wagon.

With the retirement of Leon Cameron, Joel could quite easily slot into the role of running half back, with his long, straight kicks.

Joel suffers quite a bit because he looks like he's doing it easily. I posted some time last year that he reminded my of Dale Lewis from Sydney, who also had immense talent but looked like he was using half his petrol tix. Hird looks the same at times, but seems to be more effective in getting the job done.

Half Forward for me. He's one the better set shots we've got from 50. He'll get that extra couple of seconds if he's not on the forward line, and he can kick accurately to a leading player.

Joel gets a lot of stick. But I've always wondered why he cops it for not being an in and under type in the midfield, and Campbell never does.

I think if he played the whole 2004 season at HF, a lot of people would change their minds about him.

Half Forward for me aswell.

I dont think he plays his best football there. I would like to see him in the guts - all the time but that wont happen with Cogs, Johnson, Brown and Tivvers.

I agree with 1980. Stick him down at HF for a full season and these threads will have to be back up at the end of the year to show what a difference a position can make.

Agree with 1980 and rfcta about playing Joel at HF.

Before 2003 Cambo did cop plenty of stick. Last year's form then him getting injured (and the side's slump without him) seemed to make Tiger fans appreciate how good he is and they got off his back. Absence makes a Tiger fan's heart grow fonder :D

How accountable is Nathan Buckley....when evaluating his value you need to measure both the defensive and offensive parts of his game ...when on song he's damaging ....

Buckley can often get 30 touches and his opponent 20-25 , does that make him a dud....make sure you balance your arguments in the future

good post Rioli17

It's very trendy to be a Bowden basher and in fact alot of people who's football knowledge I respect can't stand the guy.But the fact of the matter is ..

1)He gets more possesions than nearly everyone in our side.

2)despite appearance he is one of our leading tacklers.

3)he is one of leading mark takers 3rd to Richo who also the easy fall guy when looking for soft targets to blame.

4)Probably the longest kick in our side.

How good our other players that we can afford not to play Bowden each week.Granted he was a turnover merchant last season but he was hardly Robinson crusoe in that department.

Your a laugh Cairo.Talk about others having nous what a joke.I don't believe you have Platinum membership to tear up.Either that or they don't show AFL on Cairo T.V.

Some players you just cant move around the field to plug holes. Usually those with natural talent.

I dont think many can argue that Joel is not talented, just that he's not demonstrated that talent consistently enough.

I just dont think that he's a natural midfielder, and that he's being played out of position. He'll be good for averaging a couple of goals a game at HF and he'll be better at sending a decent kick towards Richo than a lot of the other players. I'd also rather he turns it over at HF than HB.

As for Buckley, his opponent may get kicks on him, but a lot of Buckley's possessions are damaging. If he's near 50, you'll be sure he's a good chance to kick the long goal.
