Thank God it's 2004 not 1994. Otherwise he would have been just as sensitive an appointment as the club's most recent interim CEO. Hands up who remembers who that was.

He also called himself a "great" moderator but is frustrated that he has to mod more than 1 board.

Weevil, you may need to use this statement I have prepared for you:

"My comments were taken out of context and by no means a reflection of how I feel about my time at the Brisbane Lions Board. I will always be grateful to the Lions Board for giving me the opportunity to moderate."

:)

Oh yes, and back on topic, when I saw the title of this thread yesterday, I was sure it was going to be a joke: something like, "Bowers gone...to annoy our Melbourne supporters even more", or "Bowers gone...down to the shops to get milk and bread." I was so happy that it was true. Not that I vilify the guy, but as others said, surely this is a sign of real change.

Mr Ripper, is it to late to reprint the old 'Up Yours Oakley' stickers with 'Up Yours Bowers'?

apart from salary cap issues, I thought we have plenty of cash reserves that could be used to attract the right person.

We can't think like that we can't use our cash reserves, thats what Bowers and Kelly did. We have less than half the cash reserves we had 3 years ago. What we do from now on has to justify the expenditure that includes the CEO. We will not survive unless we start making profits. Getting our membership up selling merchandise, making wise investments meeting our targets, getting respect, winning on and off the field, measuring what we do.

I can feel a SWOT analysis coming on. I'd better have a lie down.

Anyone using the phrase "we will not survive" is exaggerating. As humbling it may be, the AFL will never let one of its 'frontier' clubs go under after spending so much money setting up two new ones. It'll cancel out all its work put into shoring up the television rights negotiations.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear the AFL has been behind the scenes "encouraging" this review.

I know that but we shouldn't think like that. We must be expansive or "we will always do what we have always done". I am being optimistic I think we can become a power again.

Sometimes you've got to spend money to make money. The CEO position would be an example of this one would think. Pay for a better person, get better results. In theory.

Is that not the theory politicians use to justify their snouts in the trough?:D

Facetious comment. We should pay the market value for a good CEO. THe last one proved what damage the wrong choice can achieve.

Absolutely NOT. The agreement is for seven games in Victoria. Not 5, not 6. I repeat the agreement is for SEVEN and the club should never have moved from this position.

Just had a look at the draw comparing us against the other clubs that have to travel every second week.

We only traveled to Melbourne once between round 1 and 10 while Sydney and Adelaide had been 4 times. WC and Port 3 and even Freo had been twice at this stage.

Should even it up so we are traveling their a lot more spread out the 3 times in 4 weeks even if there is a split round involved.

It should be 6 in Melbourne and then 1 in Geelong. Our club should have 1 more game in Melbourne over every other club that has to travel there apart from Sydney and comparing us against other teams from this year we are the same as Freo and the crows and West coast is ahead of us. :thumbsd:

I don't think facetious is the right description for my statement at all. I'm not being humorous or flippant.

"Market value for a good CEO" and "pay for a better person, get better results" are not mutually exclusive ideas. Simply saying that comments of tightening up the purse strings while pursuing a new CEO might not be a brilliant idea. We want someone talented who can help turn the club around - you don't get that by offering a pittance.

It's six games.

Clause 7.2 h) of the Merger Agreement

"The Merged Club will play one half of the total number of home and away games per season at the Gabba and as many Melbourne based away premiership games as possible will be played at Optus Oval or the Melbourne Cricket Ground (but not less than 6) with any other away premiership games at any of Waverley, Optus Oval or the Melbourne Cricket Ground at which Melbourne based members of the Merged Club will have home ground status (in respect of which Brisbane Bears will make a contribution to gate receipts of an amount determined by AFL);

Wow you are the CEO for 9 years and the very best they can say is that you have “been an asset to the club”.

Yeah not a great wrap when the same compliment could also be technically applied to a faulty office chair that is being replaced.

Sorry Nige, miscommunication. My comment was facetious, not yours. Read the rest of what I said. Basic economics -pay peanuts, get monkey. And that is not what we need now.

Glad to see we're on the same page. I think maybe we should run this footy club. :thumbsu::cool::thumbsu:

Interesting to read in the Courier Mail today that the Brisbane Roar have taken Bowers on as a strategic planning consultant, and there are even rumours he may be being groomed to be their next CEO. :o :o :o

Good luck to them. :D

It constantly astounds me how CEO's are so often re-employed despite their previous performance. Even Sol Trujillo managed to get a cushy gig.

Gonna take a wild guess that this will NOT happen to Brian Waldron :):D

Interesting he appears to be jumping on board an organisation that has done the hard yards and is on the verge of a mjor achievement...AGAIN.

Hopefully for the Roar he has learnt from his time at the Lions and doesn't instigate a stagnancy that renders the club impotent.

"THE ROAR"

I see an excellent opportunity for a new logo. Any suggestions? Anyone?

I see a paddlepop in their future...

I actually feel kind of sorry for the Roar. Just when they were getting on their feet after a good year...
