Weekend Wrap and "Liked, Learned, Hated" right here -- How did tipping go?
Its members like you i feel for. The club is run by amateurs and it doesn't look like its changing anytime soon. Keep your chin up and hope for the best. We’ve been embarrassing for over two decades now. To bring that campaigner hird back, who is a major factor in why we’ve been this bad would be beyond ludicrous.

Yep.They are on a hiding to nothing because they need someone who is strong enough to cut through all the Essendon bullshit, but anyone who does that won't appeal to the Essendon people making the appointment.
I'm not a massive fan of Brad Scott or a hater (I miss the LOLs when he was North coach) but he was undermined by Essendon people for the entirety of his stint at the club. There is never any consistent messaging coming out of the club and the whole "strategy" thing makes you scratch your head.
Essendon had 6 players under the age of 24 on Friday. Yes they also have Edwards, Blakiston, Bryan and Reid who are older but haven't played a lot of footy. Richmond had 12 players under 24. We had 13 and just under 450 games less experience. They seem to want to sell that they have the list profile of a rebuilding club (they don't) and that they competitive (they aren't) but also their strategy is to get younger via the draft (isn't that rebuilding?) but also trading a 30 year old for 3 picks in the 10-20 range is a bad idea because reasons.
You can look at the average WC/Richmond 23 and clearly see they a few years off. If we keep the same team for the next two weeks it will be the first time this year and probably the first time in a couple of years we won't have fielded at least one <10 gamer. You put the Essendon 23 side by side with Freo and tell me what is so different other than talent and performance.
Average age 25, 2078 total games played, 1 x 250 gamer, 4 x 150 gamers, 6 x 100 gamers, 2 x 50 gamers, 10 x <50 gamers.
Average age 25, 2113 total games played. 3 x 150 gamers, 6 x 100 gamers, 8 x 50 gamers, 6 x <50 gamers.
Who at Essendon - or coming into Essendon - is going to put their hand up and admit not trading Merrett was a mistake, expectations are all over the place etc. and put forward an actual strategy/plan?

Are you insinuating that Welsh is beholden to Sheedy/Dodoro/Coteries
What might be next![]()
Accoding to Tom Morris at least 80% of Dons fans want him back.
No current season stats available
Yep.
Some Bombers Kool aid drinkers telling me the trade offer wasn't enough for Merrett.
Who cares!
Draft in 3 more kids and sell the "baby Bombers" message to fans.
Instead Welsh decided to "flex" in October and posture about "we are a big club and won't cave to Hawthorn".
This was a five minute sugar hit and just more of the same .
Stupid.
A big club doesn't need to posture or "take a stand" They just quietly do the best deal and move on.
But Welsh wanted to look tough in front of members.
Idiot.
Shout out to Essendon - nobody gives a shit about how tough you act in October.
People do give a shit about how weak you are in the actual season.
Fake tough guy acts in October won't compensate for this.
The Hawks offer was insulting in the extreme. Essendon did the right thing with Merrett given what Hawthorn was offering for him.
Let’s see what is tabled end of this year.
Merrett should never have been made captain in the first place. He’s simply not a leader. But he was and that’s on the coaching staff who put him in that role.
Not you going by your username.yeah nah
if you take our board as a source point, it would be 90% against.
I think its a vocal minority, who want hird back
I cant for the life of me understand how "Essendon Person" is a factor in anything whatsoever. It shouldn't even be a thought process. In terms of picking a head coach MAYBE you can think about getting a "club person" as a non-Vic club so you understand the impact travel has but that's about the extent of it, for Big Vic, it's completely redundant.
Welsh comes across as just as bad as Sheedy to be honest and I thought once they finally turfed Dodo that the club was finally on board with what's required. How could any new coach take the position knowing they can only stomach about half a year of properly rebuilding...
"Fans 90/10 in favour of James"
Its gotta happen, surely.
Does work for channel 9 with Bartel but his main job the last 10 years is waiting by the phone for a call from Sheedy and the board.I hope Dean Wallace can magically find his laptop with Hardy's game plan on it?
What is James Hird even doing at the moment?
FWIW Worsfold underperformed as West Coast coach. It's because Essendon live in the past and drink their own bathwater. You can appoint a club person like Worsfold, Buckley, Voss etc. but ultimately they have to be up to the task. I was sceptical when we hired Worsfold as coach but he at least spent a couple of years at Carlton to get out of the WC bubble. Brendon Gale was great for Richmond but was also a lawyer and CEO of the AFLPA before taking over as Richmond CEO. Geelong's success this century came off the back of people like Brian Cook and Mark Thompson. They aren't Geelong people. Hawthorn had Hawthorn people at board level but hired Clarkson as coach, Fagan as footy manager, Graham Wright etc. Not Hawthorn people. People employed to do a job.
Really insular thinking to stack the deck with Essendon people, and the reality is that Essendon have been no good for a quarter of a century so there is a limited number of Essendon people around who have ever been part of a successful Essendon environment. Andrew Welsh played 2002-2011 and won 40% of his games. His qualifications for meddling in the footy dept are what exactly? They will probably end up appointing James Kelly who played and coached at Essendon for a period. From all reports he is highly rated but it will come down to existing relationships with other Essendon people.
Essendon are such copy cats.
We draft shit for years, they draft shit for years.
We hire a shit coach, they hire a shit coach.
We get rid of a shit coach, they get rid of a shit coach.
Get a life Essendon and stop copying.
Yep.

Has any AFL assistant coach failed upwards as much as Solomon?
Gold Coast were crap when he was there for almost a decade. He was their line coach for defense.
Did nothing at Freo/GWS.
Spent 3 years out of the AFL system with no club wanting to hire him as an experienced assistant coach.
Suddenly gets parachuted in by Welsh without any consultation with the existing head coach and is now appointed as interim head coach.
Essendon have been lambasted for their poor defensive efforts all season and now they appoint...the line coach responsible for defense?
