I really think Essendon are on a hiding to nothing here.

Half the fan base wants Hird, half the fan base want anyone but Hird.

It doesn't seem to matter who they put in, the club still won't feel united.

Do you really know anyone who wants Hird?

The only Essendon fans I've met who don't actively not want Hird are fans so disenfranchised with the club that the idea of Hird coaching amuses them. In the same vein a lot of neutral fans would love to see Hird appointed

Not that I'm against second chances but since leaving Essendon Hird really hasn't done anything to prove he deserves another chance as a senior coach. He's done a couple of casual stints as an assistant at the Giants and in the VFL but that's it. There's just no reason for him to get the job that's not a completely emotional decision.

If you presented his resume and took his name off it no one would appoint him head coach. He has no relevant coaching experience in a decade.

Credit to Voss, he went away and spent time as an assistant elsewhere before getting a go at Carlton. Buckley has gone and spent time at Geelong as an assistant.

I mean if he was desperate to be a senior coach at AFL he would be in the league in some sort of coaching role now.

There's just no way wanting to coach Essendon again isn't at least partly driven by ego and that's being very generous

At the risk of grossly over simplifying and showing my bias towards Hirdy, wasn't Hird mostly let down by Bomber Thompson and Dean Robinson who hooked the club up with Dank? Or did he know the peptides were cooked and did it anyway.
Even if you remove the Bomber Thompson/Dean Robinson saga, they weren't a winning football club under Hird anyway.

That’s exactly how it is. Us fans are mentally shot after years of instability and understand we don’t have any say in appointments.

But this is the way the club has always been run. We have a very long history of hard nosed presidents and board members and powerful coterie groups deciding the direction of the club.
And it’s worked well in a lot of decisions regarding players and coaches contracts, and sometimes not so well.

The Essendon faithful punters don’t get a say in it. It’s just the way it’s been since the club moved from the East Melbourne ground to Windy Hill back in the old days.

That’s not true. Hird had the squad developing quite nicely at the time.

Unfortunately he decided to up the ante and made a fatal decision to have Dank and Robinson involved with things.

How can Welsh be believed now when he says publicly last month that Brad will be their next premiership coach? Was he referring to AFLW?

Dont be obtuse. We all know that many presidents say the exact same thing in dozens of past cases.

'Insulting in the extreme' and yet it will still be a far superior deal than what they could hope for this season.

Maybe they'll dig their heels in and hold him for another season, only to lose him for nothing next year.

Joe Daniher all over again.

What played out at the end of last year was Hawthorn hubris at its finest. This isn't a crack at you or other Hawks supporters. Simply my view of how it played out. Your club thought Merrett would get traded with the "set of steak knives" offer that was tabled. It was up to Hawthorn to ensure the trade went through and they simply weren't willing to play ball. Welsh was playing a game with his public commentary (he obviously read that Orange sack of sh1t's book...The Art of the Deal) and the Hawkers blinked.

It may well be that Merrett leaves this year but I dare say the offer to extract him will be better than some late 1st round picks that were in effect 2nd round picks (in what was deemed a thin draft to boot).

And take it in-house. Fatal. He could have kept it off the books like other clubs have done. The rest is history.

You're dreaming if you think the offer (from any club) in 2026 is going to better than some late 1st rounders. They'll be lucky to get offered two late firsts.

No club that has access to a decent draft pick is in a list state to throw these picks on a bloke who is 31, especially with Tassie around the corner. The only clubs that are in a position to add him as the cream to the cake will be on the pointy end of the ladder, and they are unfortunately only holding late picks.

There is absolutely nothing to gain for Essendon to hold him for another season except for brownie points for some members because they'll get diddly squat in 2027 if he moves on as a free agent.

We threw the best offer we could that wasn't completely irresponsible to the future of our list. Essendon chose to decline. That's fair. But that's likely the best offer they'll ever get for Merrett.

I may possibly be dreaming. Time will tell 👍

Are you serious or just plain ignorant?

How far back do you want to go?

Let’s start and end the argument with the most famous sacking in all of League history.

The sacking of Norm Smith at MFC.

“The catalyst for an explosive bust-up between the master coach and his powerhouse club was Smith's controversial post-match radio interview on 3AW late in the 1964 season. Melbourne had beaten St Kilda but Smith aired a long-held grievance against the men in white, accusing field umpire Don Blew of being "subconsciously biased towards the underdog". (It's important to note that club secretary Jim Cardwell approved the taped interview for broadcast.)

Blew and the umpires' board demanded an apology, but Smith refused. So in March 1965 Blew issued a writ for defamation against Smith and 3AW. Smith wanted the Demons to pay his legal expenses and was told on July 1 that he had the committee's "full moral and wholehearted support" in the matter but that he wouldn't receive its financial support.“

Hafey, Parkin….Pagan at Carlton.

The list goes on and on.

It’s called club politics. Every sporting association in the world has presidents saying all sorts of fibs while behind the scenes there’s a guillotine blade getting sharpened.
