I can't believe we took Ballantyne over Tom Swift. We really got bent over on that one.
.
Our recruiting team went into an intense huddle after Swift was taken @20 then emerged(maybe even after asking for extra time??but there was serious debate) to select Frodo.I got the impression we were gonna grab Swift and were blindsided when he went across town.
So we are really in the Weagles debt they took the bloke who was too sexy for his hair prompting us to take a little champ.

It's not an empty cliche and you know it.
Of course it's empty. Has the club's recruitment model changed considerably since they were first implemented in 2008? The club has been using the same carefully crafted strategy of reaping what it can out of the draft (and aiming for good ball users who can find the footy above all else) and finding value via mature age recruits and through free agency since that was introduced. The same drafting and development team has been there from the beginning of the Chris Bond appointment. This idea that because Lyon has arrived at the club the recruitment model has change is wrong.

Shame the Eagles took Brad Shepperd at pick 7 because we were then forced to draft Nat Fyfe at pick 20 whose always getting suspended.

Yep its a shame really, West coast got Jordan Jones at pick 52 in the 2008 draft. Freo had the next pick and got a half decent player in Michael walters

Typical Clay, take one sentence out of a quote and run with it. Anyway...

The knock on B. Hill, apart from his attitude, WAS his ball use.

So, going by your logic, they did the right thing by not taking him.

Tell me this- Why didn't any other club pick him before Hawthorn?

Or are we the only bozo's who ballzed it all up?

Cripps is 1st class dud. Ross Lyon gave him two games at the Saints and then sent him back to Sandringham. That's how bad he was.

He's in the Matt Spangher category.

When Cripps wanted to come home he didn't even approach Freo as he knew Ross didn't want him.

Another downhill skier like Josh Hill, Gaff and Shuey.
RTB's judgement on young players shouldn't be taken as gospel, afterall - he delisted Barlow from the Saints rookie list when he was over there.

Granted, Cripps is a first class front runner and seagull - he can find the goals. In most cases the cause leads to the reason why in the first place.

It's because everything else you wrote is complete crap. For instance:

Mellington ticked all the boxes on arrival and played some very good footy. It was later that his dickheadedness evolved and he got the DCM..

You are straight up making shit up here. "Dickheadedness evolved" ... come on! Why should anyone bother responding to it when you're just spinning lies?

Is that a fact.

If you have a different version of events then please share them with the board.

Furthermore:

Because I would suppose that Hawthorn have one of the better recruitment and development teams in the league. On Friday night they took a side into the game younger and less experienced than Fremantle's and walked away with a 10 goal victory. This is in spite of having won two premierships in the same time since Fremantle began the rebuild in 2008.

Sydney, WCE, Geelong...they must all be dickheads too.

Andrew Forster had more potential then Lachie Neale (they are best mates) apparently. His body broke down before he even got a chance to get going. You win some, you lose some..
Matthew Pavlich Pick No. 4 in 1999- Overlooked in 1998 draft. One of the greatest SA players in the modern game and never to play for a team in his home state..
Adelaide chose Ken McGregor in 1998 instead.

We also made the mistake of drafting Michael Barlow at pick 8 in the 2010 rookie draft when we could have had Lewis Broome or Ashton Hams instead.

This thread compares players who were crippled by injuries to guys that were given far greater opportunities straight away.

This thread overrates those players we didn't take. Personally I don't see Cripps an upgrade on Pitt or Fasolo an upgrade on Michie as neither would get a game at freo anyway.

Of all the players we could have had a hindsight wrist cutting why didn't we draft him thread about, we had one about Brad Hill

Don't get me wrong the kid has talent, but **** he isn't the second comming

The worst threads always come up after a loss.

You win some, you lose some. Our best players are a mixture of WA local guys (Fyfe, Walters, Sandilands) and interstate guys (Pavlich, Barlow and Mundy). Give it a rest.

The Forster pick was a strange one, as he is a tweener, not really a key position, something that needed to be addressed. But overall our
recruiting has been successful.
Have a look at Melbourne footy club, this will make everyone feel better, or Carlton, off field recruiting is just as important.

How else did you propose we replace Roberton?!

My issue is with the assertion that Fremantle could not have taken him because the club didn't have the right culture. Which is complete crap.

He's a lot more confident on the football field than his brother at the same stage if his career.

I think it's fair to say that missing Brad Hill was our greatest drafting error since Andrew McLeod. But then I remember that I was ecstatic about Polak and thought that Ballantyne and Fyfe were probably mistakes.

I don't subscribe to the theory either, however I choose to believe we had enough of his type already at the time alas, he wasn't high on our priority list..
