Massively disappointed.Was it really?
Massively disappointed.
This draft has effectively told us that we're not a chance to compete while JK is in the side.
Totally agree. Just disappointed that you have a Coleman Medalist going to waste. It was the right call though...WC need to do a mini-rebuild.
Going hard now would have likely seen WC end up in that 5-8 bracket but not really a genuine premiership contender.
Reading through the West Coast comments on here is terrific. And apparently they were even tweeting Anderson abuse after his mock draft.
So much for taking mids with your first two picks... and there was never any way in hell you guys were going to pick Ryan in the 20’s
Seems your club rate Ryan high enough to pay a first round pick downgrade in next years superdraft for him.
In fairness to your comment about the parochial nature of Fremantle fans in relation to Ryan, that was probably as a result of a post I made mid year, which may have influenced their opinion of Ryan.Ryan got talked down a lot, which I think was more due to the pariochal nature of Fremantle fans who don't rate him and have had a bit of a rivalry with Subiaco over the past couple of years. There are definite question marks but his performances at WAFL level as a small forward are without parallel in any of the state or U18 leagues and is an area of need for them with Le Cras on the way out, Rioli very questionable, Cripps up and down with his impact in games.
Not exactly. That wasn't the trade though, was it?
Looking at their draft you would have no idea that they have one of the most ordinary midfields in the afl with a distinct lack of class. Sure that thing can turn around quickly, but it is less likely to turn around quickly if you have traded out your future high draft picks. And while they may have some gambit that sees Gaff gone as a FA and potentially netting them a decent 1st round pick, that would be a strange way to improve a midfield.Funny thing is though for all their gnashing is that I reckon they nailed it.
Landing Allen at 21 is an awesome result, he will be a terrific player and someone I who I can easily see being a captain or leader.
Brander I do agree may be a bit surplus to their needs, but does have the scope to project very highly and does give them the opportunity to develop him in an area he is best suited to.

Ainsworth and Brayshaw aren't the most thrilling midfield duo, but they are exactly the good dependable, strong bodied quality kids that you want to have as successors to hopefully fill the gaps that the departures of Priddis and Mitchell (last year version).
I think they've had a poor couple of years with the draft, but they've brought in a heap of quality this year in my opinion who I would be very surprised to see not be successful.
Not exactly.
By the way, I think your trade wasn't a bad gamble. And I scratches me head at the actually draft selections, but I tend to think every club's experts (even the worst of them) know far more than anyone posting on bigfooty. Certainly more than some geezer who lives in Bali.

I was interested if we (Freo) were interested in Ryan as a possible draftee. Freo made it clear to me that they weren't. I should state that the Freo people I spoke to were not part of the recruiting department. Around this time I attended State training for the 18's and senior squad and heard rumours about Ryan. Not long after that I spoke to recruiters from two other Vic clubs and a SA club who have recruiting staff based in Perth. Both Vic clubs had heard stories about Ryan that had put them off. I knew there were a number of posters on the Freo board who were dead set keen on us drafting him. I posted on Freo's board what I had heard and what I knew of his off field situation. It was my assumption that based on what I and a number of other officials both from the WAFL and AFL had heard about him that it was highly likely given the small footballing community we have in this country that every club would have also heard those rumours and therefore if Ryan was to be picked up in the national draft then it would be more likely that it would be later in the draft.
FWIW, one of your fellow posters (or it may have been you HG) confirmed on the Port board his nonattendance at training when Port were there to see him.
If you have a look on the Eagles board, many on there also knew of Ryan's previous issues and were also not wanting him to be picked up in the 30's let a lone in the 20's.
So I don't think Freo fans are being unfair when stating that picking up Liam Ryan at 26 was a stretch.
Nah mate, wasn't me though I do remember it being brought up by another Perth based Port supporter. Didn't the story come out though that it was an optional training for state team members at Claremont Oval? I mean the obvious counterpoint is that it shows he may not be desperate enough but few can really profess to know what was behind him not being there that night or how many others weren't there either (and doubt he would've known or even expected we'd have guys there specifically looking at him).
As far as character goes, IMO coming down from Geraldton sticking it out when East Freo didn't take him, sticking it out again when overlooked last November and putting together two years of consistently exceptional football as a small forward speaks more than rumours of his past. Given by what he's said in interviews there is credence to the idea that he has grown considerably in terms of professionalism and maturity with his outlook on life.
I agree 26 was a high estimate of where he might go pre-draft, but I just see an obscene amount of talent in him that a AFL clubs would be mad not to back themselves in to harness in their environment. The Eagles now have and I wish them luck for taking the chance.
There was a bit of late mail that he would go in the twenties which suprised me. The foxtel pre draft show spent a bit of time talking him up as well which suggest that at least a few clubs rated him higher than a late pickNah mate, wasn't me though I do remember it being brought up by another Perth based Port supporter. No it wasn't that simple but it has been done to death in other threads. Ryan is now an AFL listed player and I wish him all the best.
I only make the point that it wasn't as simple as Freo supporters bagging the Eagles on BF for picking him up so early.
FWIW I think they have a couple of good players in Brander and Allen but probably not what they need at the moment.
I think Brayshaw is going to surprise quite a few and be a very effective player for them with affect almost immediately.
What a random thing the draft is. You have 19 possible names here in your educated guess, and by pick 89 you had one of those on that list, Ryan, taken 40 something selections earlier. Not having a go at you; I would have nfi about what my club would do outside of the top 10 picks. Just commenting about the difficulty of predicting drafts.Eagles have more chance of fixing their list problems in this draft than Norths do.
But seriously everyone knows the Eagles need to address the midfield ......so Ben how does selecting one midfield with 5 picks inside the top 37 achieve thus?
And how can the Eagles do better?
