Not sure if it's just me but just seems like this bloke has had to work a lot harder for respect than many other coaches do, even from within his own ranks.

Probably a product of impatience due to a long period without success, but I know a few Carlton people who have been quick to jump on him over the last couple of years when Carlton have hit a bump in the road, and there just seemed to be almost an assumption he was just warming the seat for a big name to come in.

It's the same with oppositon supporters I find though... just nobody seems to really rate him!

Now obviously has a decent side at his disposal and they look very good. Clearly had some definite tactics tonight against a rated opponent that really worked, and seems to have the group very motivated.

Just think it's high time he was paid a bit more respect as a coach.

A lot of parallels between his playing career and his coaching career.

Having said that, I suspect even I could have coached us to victory tonight.

if carlton had of had a poor 2011 i reckon he would have been out of a job. but they were agonisingly short of a prelim final and they've certainly had a great start to 2012. decent coach and still with a few players yet to reach their heights. should realistically win a flag within the next 2-3 years otherwise he will probably end up being labelled a failure.

I loved Ratten as a player (Lenny Hayes with success) and thought he was a good assistant coach but felt he was out of his depth as a senior coach. Happy for him to prove me wrong. One of the genuinely good guys going around and deserves every success coming to him...or at least what looks like is coming to him.

Getting better and better as well. Remember Parkin saying he disliked Monday mornings because Ratten would always be in his office telling him how Carlton can improve and what he's thoughts where. Well it seems the young man is now putting his thoughts into play and we are starting to get the rewards, although still plenty of work to do!

Need to remember he was very much a rookie coach (So is Buckley by the way). I'm sure he's learnt a thing or two in his time at the helm.

Ratten has been very good, has learnt and is improving, most important thing is you can see that the players love him. Impressive is how he has built the team and improved them in phases, good on him deserves a lot of praise after the shit he had to cop.

Rattan himself said last week before his 100th game as coach that he regularly chats to Parkin and that Parkin used to tell him that it takes you about 4 years to learn to properly grasp the coaching caper... Eg how to delegate and learn how to deal with a multitude of personalities. Last year we could see Parkins statements come to fruition!

The interesting thing is that although Scott is an anomaly he's also lucky with his list being very mature how they go about things. What I can't fathom is Buckley he's going to take 3-4 years to get used to coaching (as Voss & Hird are learning) and with a team in its prime losing that experienced coach in hindsight may be the difference.

I could never really understand any of the criticism of Ratten, I mean, how can anyone really judge his ability to coach when they have got no idea what happens internally. It's the same with Buckley, everyone is jumping all over him without giving him any time.

It's based mainly on his appearance. He just looks like an absolute idiot, which means a lot of people are quick to judge.

That said, I don't think coaching is quite what a lot of people think it is. It's a lot more about having the type to motivational personality that gets the most out of players, the ability to get all types of people to work together, and the ability to delegates. Tactically, it's miles behind almost every other game. You don't have to be a genius to come up with a feasible gameplan, as opposed to coaching in the NFL, which can be brutally complex.

Fair bit of pressure on Ratten and he has handled it very well. Expectations have been very high but he has hasn't shown any signs of cracking under pressure.

Players love him which would make it a bit easier.

Name some of them.

NFL, Basketball, League, Union, probably Soccer (I don't watch enough to say for sure).

The coach has really very little control once the ball hits the turf. The spread out nature of the game means the coach can't call set plays like a lot of other sports. I think it's what makes our game unique - complete with displays of individual brilliance and talent, instead of just a bunch of players playing their role exactly as the coach tells them to every play.

really maturing now, got some excellent assistants and player develppment coming along nicely.

Blues now have people with a clear understanding of whatit takes to win, and have come from places with quality cutures.

easy to see, pies have gone backward since robert harvey got involved in their coaching staff

Please explain what you mean by "he just looks like an absolute idiot." Are you a child? For god's sake, are you that shallow that you judge a person by their appearance? Jack Dyer, Kevin Bartlett were some of the uglier footballers to ever pull on a boot, but they could play football. Tony Jewell; what did he look like?

I'm sorry, but this is probably the most ridiculous statement I have ever seen on BF & that is saying something. The quality of posting on BF has plummeted to a new low.

I always thought he was just a fill in coach to be honest. I do not think he was ready to be coach when he started. If he gets a flag as his time as coach then he has done his job.

Bolded and that's it. Ridiculous to think that every sport is more tactical than footy.

Coach has very little control once the ball hits the turf? Not sure if serious?

What a total load of shit, To say coachs are just there to sit in a seat and yell for the camrea fot the TV, shows you do not know what you are talking about.

****ing NFL NBL get a clue.
