Brisbane Bombers

hmmm... a little surprised that many could not care less but it makes sense.

For those that are not worried, would the name cause you to be atleast a little more interested in a foreign code's side with the same moniker? ie. If you are even a little partial to a bit of NRL would you feel a connection with the NRL bombers?

It wouldn't help gain interest in any older Bomber fans, as if they have even the slightest interest to begin with they most likely already have a team. However I can see that the younger generation may be influenced by the name, this is of course assuming that they have bad parents who allow them to follow such rubbish. ;)

Don't want this.

In Australian professional sport, the Bombers are Essendon, and Essendon only.

I'm not comfortable with some franchise binging off our notation and greasing it up.

Approved. :thumbsu:

...although I'd feel better about it if EFC owned the franchise. That changes everything and could be good business sense.

Don't see what the fuss is about TBH. The NRL already share the nicknames "Tigers" and "Bulldogs" with the AFL. It hasn't detracted from their brand and can't honestly it harming the Essendon brand.

When someone says Magpies, who do you think of?

You think of what is currently the biggest professional sporting club in Australia.

We're on a path to reclaim this, and more - we're not on the path to become the Tigers or the synthetic Bulldogs.

We follow the mighty, rich and powerful Essendon Bombers and I want that to resonate all over Australia no matter where someone happens to be on both sides of the Barassi Line. No questions like "which Bombers?" - QLD and NSW is an untapped market waiting for US to swallow it.

Later, the world.

If someone in SA asks who are the magpies, the answer would be Port Adelaide. Its relative to location. Ask someone in Melbourne, and then someone in Sydney who the Bulldogs are, you get different answers.

The point is, though, that when anyone in Australia mentions "The Bombers" I don't want there to be any two-ways about it - the reference is to the EFC. No mistakes allowed irrespective of location. Everyone else can get stuffed.

Regardless both the tigers & bulldogs were well established in their respective comps.

It's a storm in a teacup anyway as surely its too stupid even for those idiots.

The Brisbane Bombers?

NRL bid team wants to be known as the Brisbane Bombers

ONE of the teams vying for inclusion in an expanded NRL competition hope to take off as early as 2013 as the Brisbane Bombers. That's the name bid chairman Craig Davison is tipped to unveil, along with the team's official playing colours of navy blue and orange, at a major announcement tomorrow morning at Albion Park Raceway.
Several potential names were suggested by 12,000 fans including Braves, Bayliners and Barracudas, before market research strongly recommended Bombers.
While the name might anger AFL officials and fire up fans of Melbourne club Essendon, who believe the Bombers' name is their property,

I cant believe there having 2 teams play out of Brisbane? yeah that NRL sure knows how to expand there game nationally, and whats best they give Essendon brand name more appeal to those NRL followers who might convert.:thumbsu:

Re: The Brisbane Bombers?

Hope you dont mind me coming across onto this thread.

How ridiculous is it that the NRL are setting up a team in Brisbane again and not in Adelaide or Tassie. I hope you guys can stop the name from going ahead. Trust me its bad when watching a show and they say "The Bulldogs are in more trouble" and they get you all worried only to find out its the stupid NRL! Good luck with it!

I played League in Tassie, there isn't anywhere near enough support for a team.
Would personally love to see a game or two played down there, and there is some groundswell for it. But a team will never ever happen.
We don't even have an AFL team and it is definitely an AFL state (as I'm sure everyone knows).
I hope you actually meant somewhere else. But I really don't see league spreading out much from Sydney and where teams already are, except maybe a second Kiwi team.

NRL is definitely on the defence, making new teams in their supposed heartland.

I wouldn't worry about it guys. The NRL nuffies aren't imaginative enough to think beyond alliteration.

If I was an NRL supporter, I'd be pretty angry at the blatant unoriginality shown by this new franchise. Especially, despite most fans voting for one of the other options, they've gone with such an unoriginal name. It would be similar to GC17 going with the 'Rabbitohs' name, or GWS going with the 'Broncos'. It's just stupid, and makes them look petty. Bombers is a name so firmly entrenched in the culture and history of Aussie Rules Football that it would almost seem like they're ripping off and tainting the name that Essendon have helped build up.

As an Essendon supporter, I don't really care that much. Imitation is the best form of flattery, I guess. However, Bombers is a trade marked AFL name so I'm sure if the AFL has any issues with it it'll get worked out in court.

We do not own the copyright to the name "Bombers." Provided they do not copy our colours I have no problems with this.

If they called themselves the "Essendon Bombers" I would have an issue with it.

I agree with this. I just hope they don't try to trade on the goodwill of EFC.

Wouldn't bringing in a second Brisbane team weaken the current Bronco's team by taking fans away?

Surely they would want their clubs to be as strong as possible rather than dividing them up, which would make it easier for them to go under?

can see the News Flashes now

Bombers player engages in oral sex with a dog!

Have heard (live in RL territory) that the brisbane bid is not as strong as the others.

as i posted in the thread on the mainboard that has for some reason disappeared i thought the NRL would want something more original....just for product recognition

robson was on 1116sen this morning saying they would take it to court. He reckons we have trademarked the name bombers (don't know how you could!) and it would affect our lisence agreemnts around the country for marketing and merchandising purposes.

He said the passion and history of a club is all about its name and colours.

(sorry to paraphrase but its all i can remember)

A caller called up and said we have not always been known as the bombers, it was too offensive during the war..and we were also known as the same olds before that...

andy (knob) maher laughed heartily at this and said "gee what an inspiring name that was!" to which tim replied...yeh, your right we should have thought of something creative like the blues. i lol'ed a bit in the car

in the end they all agreed to disagree.

This is about drumming up cheap publicity IMO. They know they don't have a hope of a court accepting their use of the name. An online report on ABC Net had most comments from people absolutely panning it.

Some of the commentary being made in this thread about the conduct of Rugby League players is nothing short of moronic, arrogant and obnoxious.
The conduct of players from North and St Kilda in the past couple of years hasn't been too impressive, and those were only the stories that surfaced. These are issues of football culture, the nature of masculinity and the stupidity of youth.
Seriously, some posters need to grow up.

South east Queensland has been one of the fasting growing regions population wise. I'd also suggest they're hoping to capitalise on the success of the State of Origin side.

Years ago there was a side called the South Queensland Crushers that I think existed alongside the Broncos, but they folded, like the many Gold Coast teams. Now, with the success of the Titans, perhaps they think a second Brisbane team will work.

Apart from everything else, I've never actually been very fond of the name Bombers. Pretty horribly mascot really... a terrible machine (or pilot thereof) that rains down indiscriminate death and destruction. Nevertheless, the blood in my veins is red and black so I've learnt to live with it, plus we'll always be the Dons. At least there's an honest history behind the Essendon Bombers name. But the fact that these stupid boofballers pick such an unoriginal nickname, with no good reason, that symbolises the worst atrocities of war, in this day and age.... defies belief.

What's it matter, will last a decade tops before the whole competition goes down the toilet.
:Dlol. Good comedy.

Shouldnt be an issue, theres been Magpies Tigers Bulldogs and Bears across the two codes.

Although shit name and a club I hope never gets up (for purely selfish, bear related reasons).
