Agreed. People are seriously overrating Broughton. Anyone would think we're trading Fyfe for Pick 37. We're lucky to get Pick 37 in my opinion. He's an average player and got a top 5 in the BnF in a shit year where the majority of our good players had half the year off due to injury.

Yeah, except you must have missed how he also managed a top 5 B&F finish the previous season, when we had a similar season to 2012. Despite missing many games himself. And was BOG in a finals victory.

I feel happier now that I've read you posting an opposite opinion to mine. If you think he is overrated, then I know for a fact that he is not.

Writing was on the wall this year, Broughton was not played as a defensive player. He's not better than our midfielders when healthy, so was played at HF.

Fine some of you think he was better than Pick 37 but how much better? Pick 30 tops, a pick in the 20's would be dreaming, obviously St Kilda thought the same thing. Don't forget that FFC had to find a club willing to take on his last year contract which was back-ended.

I liked Broughton too but he wasn't in the plan for 2013 onwards so they got what they could for him rather than him being delisted next year or traded for even less.

How did we have a similar season to last season? We didnt make the 8 and had injuries galore. This season we make the 8, knock off the previous champion in the 1st week of finals.

It doesn't matter what any of us think of Broughton as a player.

What matters is that the powers that be didn't think he was in your best 22 and have moved him on for chump change.

Good now **** off and take your know it all attitude to another board!

I was referring to a comment referring to 2011, such that when I said "previous", I meant 2010. That might not have been clear enough, sorry.

Couple of chill pills are needed to be taken on this board I think. A lot of you forget the comments you all made about Bond being stubborn at the trade table (during Mitch Clark debacle) and he should relax a bit but now that he has relaxed a bit its the end of the world. Can't have it both ways but think of it this way, we cop the unders now for Broughton and in 12 months time when Swallows contract (just an example) runs out we will have a good working relationship with the Gold Coast Suns which we cant say the same for Colllingwood, Essendon or Brisbane who will never deal with again. Gives us a better opportunity of luring a "homesick" player back to WA and also helps that we have freed up some space in the cap.

Its not always about this one decision but multiple.

He wasn't in our plans for 2012 either and yet he played every game when fit. Having Duffield and Ibbo in the same team is a proven disaster. We will have very little choice but to play them both next season now. Especially, if there are even a small number of injuries. Keeping Broughton and trading Ibbo for pick 45 would have been a better outcome for our club.

i just wanna know if dealing with GC was broughton's preference, when other clubs were also interested.

Like all those times this season they played in the same team?

We have a far more developed defensive system now compared to 2010-11.

Then, it was more a free flowing game, and like ping pong Greg sucked up the possessions returning the ball from the back flank time after time.

Where, now, the "team", as a whole, is made accountable for shutting down opposition scoring opportunities.

There were a lot of changes in the club this year, new line coaches all over the ground, new senior coach.

No room to rest on laurels, and perhaps Greg just didn't assimilate as well as others, thereby, stuck his head out as surplus to needs.

Especially considering the year he had (average), Greg would have become one of our highest paid players this season, if the rumors hold water and his salary was heavily back loaded, then GC may have picked up the tab and done us a favor whilst boosting the earning capacity of our young guns and letting us get a little more involved in the draft.

Bright side speculation, I know.

But, I refuse to buy into the doom and gloom scenarios and public hangings being peddled by some. No matter how god damn right they may be.

I'd acept top 20 draft pick but this hasn't helped Freo much. Maybe looking for a specific player to fill a need over time but still no guarentee at such a low draft pick and what a loss to the club.

Broughton was on the outer all year, good depth player but very tradable.

The injury he got in round 15ish was not a injury that keeps you out all year!

Like fyfes shoulder, it would have been taped up and he would have played in the finals. Management put a line through him long ago.

unfortunately we didn't get overs as collingwood did with the dawes and wellingham deal but 37 is obviously what he is worth as they had shopped him around for 3 weeks.

If there is something else in the works and we needed the picks or cap space to get it done, then it makes sense.
Broughton could have nominated GC giving them a leg up and if we were planning on another trade this had to get done ASAP. It doesn't excuse the fact it's a terrible deal, but if GC were aware of our situation then it's just smart trading on their part not to budge knowing they had the advantage. It puts pressure on whatever deal the club is working on now to be a success though.

Of course if we aren't looking at 'bigger picture' type deal, than it's just shitty trading

Personally, other than Jon griffin, I don't think bond has made one decent move during a trade period.... And even griffin was because Adelaide were trying to do the right thing by him.

On top of that, we haven't drafted bugger all kpp's to date.... And do you really think we will get any young gws players? Won't happen, they will all either stay on big dollars or request to go to west coast..... Man the last 24 hours has gotten me down

Well said Chris..the voice of Reason.

Broughton is a good solid player who is worth a 2nd round pick. He is not a 1st Rounder. What has distorted the issue is the large number of REALLY bad trades ie Dawes, Wellingham, Lee and Hickey for first round picks and Hogan for Two 1st rounders!

Everybody should lie down, breathe deeply and think of blue skies and oceans with crystal dolphins.

Yeah, I think you're right here. There have been some 'interesting' trades which is not helping some deal with the Broughton thing. Dawes is a good example, Melbourne were desperate and they had picks to burn .. it's not the same thing. I said it earlier, it's comparing apples and oranges. In a more normal year before all the expansion/compo/tanking picks when trade period was a lot quieter, this sort of trade would have still felt unders, but not as much.

2nd rounder from GC was really the only thing on the cards, it looks worse because of all the other picks pushing it down and the fact that GC had already traded out their decent 2nd round pick (pick 25 or so). Saying we should have got pick 20-30 is basically what we've got if you contextualise it to the circumstances.

Oh boo hoo.

You can call me a know it all if you like, seeing as most of what I said on the Mitch Brown thread proved to be correct.

Anyway, despite the in's and out's that go with a new coach settling in, I hope you guys give the top 4 a shake.

Those are all good points, GhostPig.

However, it is a mystery to me how someone like Broughton doesn't fit into our gameplan. He is tough as nails, and is easily our most capable small of actually defending one-on-one.

I can accept moving him on by saying it was for salary cap reasons; trying to lure Buddy; personal differences with the coach; maybe doing some deal with GC for future trading; speculation that he has a really bad back injury, etc. I just can't accept we traded him because he is an average hack or surplus to needs.

You mean like when we won 8 of our last 9 and then knocked off the reigning premiers in an away final at the MCG?

And Broughton only played in two of those games btw.

Personally, if Broughton was available I would have played Broughton in the team before Ibbo. He is harder at the ball, will chase and tackle, is a more consistent kick, is more versatile and if given a shot at goal will invariably convert. None of this can be said of Ibbo.
The team won those games not Ibbo, and I am pretty damn sure if Broughton had of played in those games instead of Ibbo we would have still won and probably more comfortably. I like some parts of Ibbo's game and he may improve but there is a good reason why Spurr is now first choice in the backline ahead of Ibbo.
