Port wouldn't even pay for their own players.

Yet we are playing Spurr and not Broughton. For what reason? If it had of gotten us a tall we needed or improved our draft position significantly I could understand it. but none of this has happened. Yet.
Spurr is younger and faster, you've answered your own question. We moved Broughton on because we have Spurr.

I like Spurr. Another year in the system and improving his decision-making he will be very good for us.

Could have moved Ibbo on because we have Spurr and Broughton.

You don't want to be taking talls at pick #37 anyway. If we're going by history, then anything outside of a top 5 pick is a complete crap shoot.
So we got rid of Broughton so we could make a speculative choice on a small we don't even really need?

I'll go with Lyon's opinion on that one.

Please provide the quote where Lyon said Spurr is a better player. Even if Spurr suits Lyon's game plan better it doesn't mean he is a better player. If Spurr finishes in the top 5 in the Doig in 2013 then we'll talk.

Yeah that work didn't mean anything..

I think he has his strengths and weaknesses, and his ability to trade, especially trading in players that we need, is not one of his strengths. It would be fair to say most premiership lists aren't developed by draft picks alone. Even Geelong renowned for their drafting had a plethora of great father-sons and traded in a guy like Mooney and Ottens.

Broughton had trade value Spurr doesn't. That is why Spurr stayed and Broughton went.

So we should trade McPharlin and keep Faulks?

Ross obviously rates Spurr as the better defender, personally I doubt he would have traded him otherwise.

RTB has a pretty good understanding of who is a better player Broughton vs Spurr, last year this forum was making the same comparisons between Dawson & Silvagni and look who won that debate.
These guys know what they are doimg, they have all the facts & data and make decisions for the good of the club.

I doubt it came down to the coaches thinking Spurr is better than Broughton. Both probably were viewed as depth players. Broughton is the depth with greater currency.

Exactly, and we only got 37 for Broughton. What the hell is going on. I'm confused.

One is a player that you can get anytime in any draft in any year while Key defenders are much harder to find. look in the draft this year and there is probably only 2 players who look like being Key defenders off the bat. You always pay more for those players, look at the price ruckman get compared to players who are midfielders and flankers.

Brown did have a good finals series in the WAFL but that would be paying a high price but the fact is there aren't many around. Look at the WCE list, if they lost one of their key defenders who do they have on their list who could do it if Brown did go? Then look how many could play a Broughton type role on the list?

Also, 9 months is one footy season extra. So, value of someone who will play for 2-4 years vs 3-5 years.
That's a pretty marginal argument at age 25-26. So much can happen in 4 years that the possibility of one extra year makes no difference.

Hindsights a wonderful thing and I know that other variables play out during trade period but if Freo knew a couple of months ago that they were likely to trade Brought's surely they would have renegotiated his contract and loaded 2012 (subject to Brought's agreeance and his tax position etc) payments thus reducing 2013 and increasing trade value? Atleast when renegotiating a few other players a month ago when we surely still had room in 2012 cap.

****ing Marcus Ashcroft from the Suns on trade radio acting all smug at the value of the trade. Said that Freo were keen to let him go.

If I was him I would be sounding pretty smug too.
