Must agree unfortunately....

I used to be a big "Bruce" fan , but I just cringe now when he gets excited.

Dont know when or where he lost it, but he has definately lost it IMHO.

I think deep down he knows he has lost his mojo and its only a matter of time before he departs...just hope he is not alone when he does because some of his mates and off siders are terrible.

Dead right. This bloke is a dead man calling. Just needs some merciful being to pull his mike. A living parody of himself. Painful.

Bernie was a hack never gave the dockers a go !!! But the biggest problem that we have is that the networks continue to use ex footballers . As im sure there are far better applicants for the job. In W.A I have been following the career of one young Adam Papalia who i hear regularly ( hope i got the spelling right ) who has far more insight into what US the average joe foootball follower wants to hear , yet he is assigned giving reports from WAFL games. where will the next talent come from . THINK ABOUT IT the boundry riders from last year are a digrace give someone else a go

I always find the debate about Bruce funny.

Watch a game from 2001, his commentary is pretty much the same. In the five years where 7 didn't have the rights we got commentary from a whole bunch of new callers, guys who actually knew who the players were and were more than the boring stiffs that 7 trotted out year in year out, like Ian Robertson, Peter McKenna, Don Scott and co.

I know Commetti is probably a similar age to Bruce, but the lines Denis drops are just dead around the 7 guys, whereas on 9 Eddie/Brayshaw/Lyon/Derm knew how to bounce off him. It's not a question of talent, it's like a generation gap in commentary.

The days of guys like Bruce who have a million stats and no ability to describe the play with more than three different words are over. That's why Clinton was the best, he didn't try and be the expert, he was the caller, he painted the picture, and every play was different, described a different way with a different wit, but always brilliant.

Bruce might have been good in the early 90s, but nearly 20 years later, the game has moved on massively, and so has the commentary. He can't adapt so his time is up. He's still great for things like the Olympics and doing the aths etc, but footy has well and truely passed him by.

IMO, I reckon the Seven commentary team of Peter Landy, Lou Richards & Bob Skilton, in their prime from 1978-86, was the best commentary team of all time. The ABC commentators in that time when the ABC had VFL/AFL football, like Tim Lane, Drew Morphett, the late Doug Heywood, the late Geoff Leek, Clarke Hansen were very good too. Nowadays we get possibly the worst commentary of all time, with guys like Bruce McAvaney, Tim Watson, Ricky Olarenshaw, Steve Quatermain, Robert Walls (excellent when he's doing On the Couch on Fox Sports, however awful when doing special comments) Michael Voss, Andrew Maher, Tim Gossage, just to name a few. That's why Fox Sports is far superior than Seven & Ten combined.

MacAvaney's total Essendon bias

He has always been bad, but this season it has gotten worse. Something has to give, this is driving me to distraction. Forget about Eddie McGuire's Collingwood bias, at least he was professional enough to give a bit the other way. Did anyone else notice how disappointed and deadpan Bruce was when calling the Doggies goals in the last quarter last night?

"Oh, and he puts it through" or "..and the Dogs have sealed it"

Compared with the more typical Bruce verbal ejaculation when Essendon had their run going earlier:

"Davey! Davey!!! DAVEY!!!! HE PUTS IT THROUGH!!! HE'S CLEVER!! HE'S SPECIAL!!!"

I can't give you verbatim quotes, I don't have that good a memory and I don't have a copy of the game.
What I do have is an over-riding impression:

Bruce = Total Essendon Fanboy


Make him sit in the corner and have a think about it, channel 7. He is woeful at the moment.

Adelaide fan aside, he was certainly cheering the Dons on last night. Anytime Lovett-Murray/Lovett/Davey got the ball, he soiled his trousers in excitement. Granted they are great to watch, but boy he gave the call everything he had when they touched the ball.

Whatever teams is not favoured to win, he seems to get more excited when they make a game of it.
And Essendon have been underdogs all year, yet looked like winning.
Most other underdogs have not ever looked like winning all season.
