Bryce Gibbs and his personal issues

Carlton did the right thing. I can't imagine Gibbs being anything other than a complete professional and playing to his ability next season, and the two clubs might find themselves at the same juncture again next year. No point getting bent over at the trade table for a contracted player unless you think that guy is going to be a poor influence around the club next season.

remember when carlton last won a flag? they cheated the salary cap to stop SA players returning home? Carlton have history of being rotten to the core and not being able to compete in this league on level terms. Remember Carltank?

I actually feel sorry for thier fans, thier club is forcing them to follow a player that doesn't want to be there. That can't be good for morale. Its rather selfish and will lead to more implosions.

Having said that, they had a right to do what they did and should not get any help when it goes balls up. No more priority picks, no financial bail outs, no soft draws to bring back the members and manufacture 'wins"..

It's a sad state of affairs tbh.

Having a new baby away from family is hard. Its hard no matter if you are 1 hour away or 12 hours away. None of us know the personal circumstances. It could be something as convenient as not having a convenient babysitter, it could be post natal depression, illness in the family or a million other things. Yes Bryce is under contract, but he works in an industry where he can request a trade. Contracts all of a sudden become meaningless to a club when they want the player out of the club. Take Travis Cloke for example, or even talk of Tom Boyd being overpaid and that he should take a paycut, which was the call of the media not even 3 months back.

A lot of sentiment on here seems to say that Bryce should have requested a trade to either of the Adelaide clubs. Yes there is a history between the Gibbs family and Port that might have made that an interesting decision, although one could argue he should have been aligned to Port as a father son under the original allocation of clubs before the game allowance changes, but i digress. We turn the other cheek when its Dangerfield wanting to go home, but only to Geelong, or Judd and Carlton. Or even in the case of that well known Victorian Jaeger O'Meara. Players demand trades to clubs all the time, its only in rare cases that those trades fail to come off such as this, where things tend to get magnified.

Now is the answer that clubs can trade players that are under contract to any club? I'm not sure thats something we want, particularly with the guys who are on the low end of the pay scale. Imagine having a job where you could be forced to move your family from Perth to Brisbane at the drop of a hat, only to be traded to Melbourne the following year, and earning 150k for the
privilege

Debate the topic all you want, but to see talk of Bryce should harden up, he's an overpaid pussy, his missus is a whiny bitch is just a sad thing to see.

Wow! I would like to see some evidence, but I'll take your word for it. Your emotional state and personal thoughts on Carlton look to be extremely accurate.

Remind me to get my knowledge and education from you.

And I guess you assume Gibbs has some beef with the club for not getting traded, even though he has confirmed of his appreciation with how the club have handled the situation and that he'd be happy to hang on for another season on a 5-year contract.

He took a heavily front loaded contract and then after getting the big money, wanted to change clubs.
Good on Carlton for holding firm.

If true, that is the reason driving his request to go home, why would Carlton then want to hold on to a person of such character??

Yeah, good on them for holding firm but geez I'd have no sympathy for the guy.

$150k a year? Poor bastards. I don't know how they survive :'(

And imagine taking your 6 year old out of school and moving cross country away from family to earn that wage for a career that will on average be over in 2 years

Even after relocation costs it's significantly more than they'll get outside of football. Part of the job.

good analysis on how a players value rises and falls

Yep, Gibbs value could't be much higher. Adelaide in no position as a buyer to set or influence the price. Showed they didn't know what they were doing and lacked an understanding of the market. Maybe next year, can't see this has done much for the relationship between Carlton and Gibbs and his manager and by then Gibbs and his family may be far better settled in and the ship may have truly sailed. Gibbs' value may have dropped a little in 12 months but the Crows may have wasted a season. Their premiership window is now and the clock is really ticking, now was the right time to make a big move. Fortune favors the brave.

This never happened, best to do some research first before making up history. Only one club has won a premiership while being over the salary cap and it wasn't Carlton.

Hey, we've played in a Grand Final more recently than Adelaide :$

I could understand if Adelaide were mad when Carlton were refusing to trade Gibbs if he was about to enter free agency, but they offered a so so deal for a 27 year old, very good player and 3 more years of his contract to go, I think Gibbs is well within his rights to ask for a trade so his new baby can grow up with his family but Adelaide screwed him not Carlton.

How did we screw him, we owed him nothing he could have joined two years ago if he wanted to come home. We offered a fair a reasonable figutre we are staring down the barrel at two of the best drafts being reported on record. No way known should we have given up two firsts and miss out on setting up the club, maybe for a Chris Judd type, but please Btryce Gibbs

Adelaide should surely be satisfied they reamed Carlton with the Betts deal and I am sure they expected Carlton to roll over again, but Silvagni is no idiot and has Carlton's best interests at heart, nor Adelaide's.

His old man absolutely hates Port through the SANFL old days. Salary cap or not, he wouldnt ever play for the club. Plus we've got Aaron Young. Only enough space for 1 man bun in the salary cap.
Yes because how much a parent hates a side has bearing these days:
