Interesting that Greenwood also copped some strong feedback after the Lions game (it's in a paywalled Advertiser article).

Did we come into this season thinking things were just going to happen? Seems to be a lot of questioning the efforts of players going on.

After the debacle of the 2017 GF and the 2018 season, I am some what stunned that some of the players have had these half arsed efforts this year.

This is actually a terrible look on our Club. I really expected more from us in the first 4-5 games of the year.

agree to disagree on the 1%ers. It's one of the things I think we have always been poor at. I can't remember the last sheppard I saw (other than Brad who was everywhere last week).

Add to that defensive running. There was a great example of Gaff in the 3rd last week who took a mark inside our F50, kicked wide to the wing, then ran at 75% into their F50, past about 3 of our players jogging back (Atkins, CEY, Seed). Gaff was then in the play again and set up a goal. CEY only started running hard at him once Gaff was 25m ahead of him, and almost had the ball. If any of those guys ran hard defensively on that occasion, they would have stopped a goal.
CEY is a serial jogger

Certain players.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like players don't know enough about their performance? Why would they be so angry when they're told they've been omitted if they also knew their performance problems? Why would they need to have robust discussions with the coach to go through why they're being dropped and what they need to improve? It just doesn't feel like we're communicating performance expectations on a week to week basis.

Because they are human and being told you aren't playing in the pinnacle of their competition isn't going to make you happy?

I'd suggest 99% of sportspeople would react the same?

No idea without being present

I would guess it is more likely there was a mix of positive and negative feedback, but for some the negative feedback can wash off unless there is the cold reality of being dropped

I'd also suggest there's an element of "oh, but I was trying to..."

Like when Gibbs got his first goal against the Lions by ignoring his defensive assignment and just lucked out a bit on getting it. Coach would likely be furious about it, player is probably like "yea, but I kicked the goal?"

Remember when Campo went boonta on Dangerfield because he kept ignoring his defensive assignment on Sam Mitchell to try and win the ball? Dangerfield thinks he's doing the right thing by stopping Mitchell by winning it himself, but both times it cost us goals because he ignored the coaches instructions.

here's a free obviously fake conspiracy theory for those who are inclined towards such things:
* 4 players played all 22 games in 2018 - Jacobs, Gibbs, Jenkins, Greenwood
* Jacobs has been out injured, but the other 3 are mostly fit
* Jenkins has been out of the side disproportionately long
* Gibbs is repeatedly dropped, seemingly at random
* Greenwood on thin ice despite solid form

Conclusion: this years Collective Minds will be some sort of new age "Pretend 2018 never happened" motivational scam.

It's just you. They sit down with their line coaches every Monday and review their tapes. They know.

They just don't like being dropped, especially senior players who feel some degree of entitlement to their position. Bryce even said as much.

I’m a bit over our senior players getting dropped and then talking to the media about hard private conversations they’ve had with the coach.

How about shutting the **** up and earning back your spot.
Agreed. Don't seem to find these kind of interviews coming out of Hawthorn or Geelong. Is this because we're a two horse town?

Yes. But also guys like Roughead aren't seemingly as entitled.

The sense of entitlement exists because our coaches/selectors allowed and condoned it.

Going all the way back to 2016, senior players have been allowed to get away with substandard efforts and haven't been dropped due to experience/credits in the bank/leadership/good bloke/continuity/ladder position/etc.

Atkins, Mackay and Jenkins were the only ones to pay the price up until this year.

We didn't even pick the strongest team for the GF because of this mentality.

Good because he was rubbish against Brisbane.

The attitude at the start of 2019 amazed me too. Our guys are the biggest bath water drinkers in the comp; being the dominant team in a 2 team footy town doesn’t help.

We had positive press all pre-season and two wins in the JLT; we rocked up to play Hawthorn thinking we were the shit.

I still have nightmares about last year's game in Darwin where we were running in quicksand chasing Melbourne (hardly the quickest spread team). Makes me think I'd want runners like Atkins/Mackay/Knight/Ned rather than overload with Gibbs/CEY types.

Pretty fair assessment considering poor or not enough feedback was 1 of Jackson Edward's grievances

That game was in Alice Springs

Maybe we build them up into prima donas.

There does seem to be something in our culture that breeds quite self-congratulatory attitudes. I think Walsh recognised it. Blight certainly did. Maybe Pyke has now.

Senior players don’t expect to get dropped for poor form st our club. It’s as simple as that. Gibbs would think he’s safe because he sees the other rubbish output that qualifies for continued selection.
