I totally agree there are deeper issues here, no arguments. I hope that if the rumours are true he has the help around him he needs.

For me what they are betting on is irrelevant. Smoking is also legal, we know the damage that causes. For many gambling is equally addictive and devastating.

Footballers with gambling addiction is nothing new and sadly these will not be the last. I find it distasteful that an organisation which likes to pat themselves on the back regarding player welfare will take significant money and promote these organisations.

In my opinion the AFL are helping create the next generation of problem gamblers, you cant watch/listen to the footy without several mentions of the betting odds/multi's/bets of the week etc. When you have 5 yr footy obsessed kids asking what the odds mean we have a problem.

It's not just the AFL that are guilty of this.

Actually what the person is gambling on is actually the most relevant issue, because thats how counseling and therapy can help.

If he is betting on sports, he needs to learn how to watch sports, without the need to bet on outcomes. Much like how an alcoholic in recovery needs to learn how to be around others that drink.

This problem is not unique to the AFL. In Europe it is much much worse in terms of amount that is wagered by players, there are players that are betting like $100,000 per bet. Mind you these players are earning like a million a week.

The ingredients that cause these issues are the same, plenty of money, plenty of spare time and plenty of excitement from the rush.

just make up a season ending injury and get him out of the game. if it's true of course.

the in and out of the team, the endless speculation from the media, it can't be helping as a person, let alone a footballer.

Its a bit late now the horse has bolted. This should have been addressed earlier instead of the way it is being managed by the AFC.

I doubt this is the face time the Crows have had to deal with this issue.

There is a gambling epidemic amongst footballers, 2 lost or owe $1M, one from VIC and one from SA, so the Beames Gibbs rumours sound legit.

Up to 120 players have gambling issues.

Its worse in Europe, much much worse. Imagine earning like $50-$100m a year, there is only so many super cars you can buy to get a thrill.

Its a world wide problem amongst elite athletes that are young and earning a lot of money.

Of course not, Simon Goodwin had the same issue when he was playing.

I don't know if you can say the club hadn't addressed it, not enough known and if he wants to keep playing football and it's been decided that it's what best for him I don't think you can deny him that. It's a difficult situation for sure.

If I was a believer of conspiracy theories, could I question Beams being out for 3 months with an injury that required surgery?

I can and I have.

Its an opinion I am expressing. I dont think you can say the Club has addressed it. Its speculation on your part to. The Club could be doing nothing or could be doing everything.

Goodwin's situation was a lot more different and unique. For starters he was betting on AFL outcomes. Goodwin's situation and Gibbs is both unique and different. I will continue to reiterate that we dont know about previous players.

There has been a lot of rumours and innuendo floating around Gibbs for a while now. Now that it has been released via electronic media, it will place a lot more scrutiny on both the individual and the Club.

It has placed Gibbs in a difficult situation, while he tries to regain control of his life.

In another sign of AFL clubs' growing concern about gambling, Carlton pulled some of their coaches out of a player punting syndicate at the club, which has been wound back.
The Carlton players have just been receiving gambling education from health sociologist and gambling expert, Professor Samantha Thomas, who has counselled other AFL clubs. The use of Thomas is believed to have been club-driven. AFL players also receive gambling education – along with drug education and a host of other welfare issues – through the AFL Players Association.

Players getting together to wager on horses is hardly unusual at AFL clubs – and it does not violate any rules or regulations, given that the only prohibition is for players and officials betting on AFL.

But the fact that the Blues gently persuaded some assistant coaches to withdraw from the player betting pool is another sign that clubs and the industry more broadly are concerned about the self-harm potential of players betting heavily and the image of betting, although many clubs have lucrative deals with sports betting agencies.

I guess the media got their pound of flesh when Bolton, time to turn their attention to someone else.

The gambling issue, is going gather legs over the next 48hours. A few side stories and battles going to take place as well. AFLPA, Media, players. AFL, Club.

The Gibbs issue has been public knowledge for a few weeks, they just needed a way of reporting it without it being a direct article.

The Melbourne media were busting to go with the story last week. Despite what alot of people think of the Melbourne media I think generally if they start getting interested in something Crows related then there is a fair bit of truth to it. Otherwise they couldn't care less about the SA clubs.

So thinking back, was it right for Carlton do deny Bryce Gibbs the opportunity to come home the first time he asked?

Nothing will happen like over the goods saga. The afl said sorry but never held anyone accountable. Everyone kept thier jobs and cash.

Weak as piss and unsincere.
