FORMER Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley says Ben Cousins poses too great a risk to be worth drafting because of his age and personal history.
Both Collingwood and St Kilda have shown interest in the 30-year-old former West Coast skipper, who still needs to convince the AFL he has sufficiently recovered from drug addiction to be allowed to return to the game.

But Buckley, who retired last year after becoming the Magpies' longest serving captain, said if it was up to him the club would not take a punt on Cousins.

"No, (he's a) little bit too old,'' Buckley said.

"He's probably got one or two good seasons left in him and that's if he comes back cherry ripe, because I know how quickly the game has changed in recent years.

"He's missed a lot of football and that's not to mention the issues that you're going to have or you may have with him personally.

"I think if he does become available to a club he'll be in good nick because the AFL will have ticked him off ... but on top of that it will still be risk, a football risk to a footy club because of his age.''

If Nathan had any involvement in the club and this situation, he wouldn't be commenting.

No more than a passing comment to a question asked.

When did buckley become our list manager or coach?

Nath as much as i love him is a commentator and that is his opinion, doesnt really matter in this situdation

Evidently the board is split.. in the end Cousins turns 31 next year and his own rehab facility said his chances of recovery are 1 in 10.. throw in dodgy hammys and the pace of the game and it's easy to see where Bucks is coming from

shhhhhhh please nath!

you were a great player/leader/captain/personality for our football club, but you are not currently in a position of employment there. Please be quiete about the happening of your old home!

the journalism industry must really get to these people quickly.

Shut up Bucks

You have nothing to do with the club anymore your in the media your now a enemy (Not Really i Still LOve You)

I really hope this doesnt turn out like it seems it will

Cousins would be great at Collingwood. We only need to get two years out of him to make it worth while. We need some experience in the midfield now that Burns is gone. I couldn't care less about what Cousins has done in the past.

Don't you think he would be saying it for the greater good of the Pies if not anything else? Sure he'll be provide a comment because he's on that side of the fence now but no doubt he'll give it honestly and how he sees it. It's alright not to agree with him. :thumbsu:

Bring in Cousins I say.

Buckley is just saying where he see's our list, and I agree with him.

If anyone actually believes getting a 31 year old Ben Cousins will win us a premiership they are seriously delusional. Even with Cousins our midfield is still shite compared to Geelong's and Hawthorn's, and Cousin's has about 2 good years at most left in him (thats if his body holds up, and thats not likely considering his hammy's started to give way last year)

Our window of opportunity for a flag will occur in about 2-3 years when our youngsters mature and we get a good midfield to complement our good defense and forward lines ( hopefully someone at the club has finally realised that a dominant midfield will win you a flag).

Cousins will be gone by than, and either way I will be happy, its not the end of the world if we dont get him.

I suspect Malthouse is primarily behind the Cousins push because his 10th year will no doubt be his last year without a flag and Buckley and Burns in the wings

He has got us very close 3 times before and may be throwing all the eggs in the basket.. not sure it is in the best interest of the list considering our window hasn't opened yet

Well then Tony Shaw certainly has as well. I would hope you would defend him to the same extent.
Tony Shaw gave me the happiest day of my life, he can stand on his head and sing Heil to the Reichstag for all I care.. if the same sort of hysteria starts up over Bucks having his say I'll projectile vomit on the lot of you

My view is that we should take him.....I think its well documented we are the front runners. Ultimately he is a risk but the upside can be enormous in a playing sense (part if you get him for free), but also as an example to a young group of players around what can happen to them and how to be an elite athlete.

Bucks never played in a premiership so he dosn't know what it takes.
Ben Cousins has played in one - if Collingwood don't get him they will be a joke to the competition.
At least have a crack and take a chance rather than playing it safe all the time.

so we draft cousins in 09 that still leaves two years where buckleys decision makes little differnce to what actually happens.

Sorry nathan i love you really mate some awesome memories but right now the opinion is un-needed
