Buddy - How many weeks?

He didn't need to stop on a dime. He needed to bend over and win the ball. He was at the ball first. He puts his body on the line to win the ball and he's fine.

Yep, if he picked up the ball and then bumped him, probably wouldn't be an issue, he also would have hit him lower

But reality is he deliberately bumped a player in the head, he left the ball behind and hit him! If you ignore the ball and go the man then you are in trouble, add in his record and only the Sydney favouritism can save him a few weeks off

That is just crap, deliberately bumped him in the head. Get real.
High, careless. 3 weeks.

  • Chose to bump, high contact, careless, high impact
  • Alternative options: go for the football, don't bump
  • Possible defences: bracing himself, tried to get low to avoid head high contact, had no alternative.
  • MRP consideration: A. ASSESSMENT OF CLASSIFIABLE OFFENCES Conduct is now graded as Careless or Intentional (replacing Intentional, Reckless or Negligent). The MRP will have the capacity to consider a range of factors in grading an incident and will retain the capacity to upgrade their assessment of the severity of Impact where there is potential to cause serious injury. http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/AFL/Files/2015TribunalBooklet.pdf (page 4)

Shane Edwards needed to be substituted off under the concussion rule to be assessed and then was later cleared to play.

This isn't a good look, and with the head being sacrosanct, these incidents are what the game is trying to stamp out.

Hawthorn plays Sydney at ANZ in 3 weeks so I'm tipping he'll get just the two.

Can someone please explain to me how that collision could be described as anything but high impact?!?! How much harder could you possibly hit someone in the head in a game of AFL?! Concussions result from axonal shearing of the brain twisting and bouncing in the skull, there is NO direct linear relationship between force and concussion.

The exact angle, twisting, point of impact, amount of force absorbed through bones/cartilage, etc are all factors that lead to concussion, NOT just the force.

It's absolutely incorrect to assume "no concussion = can't be high impact".

I'm in the camp which would say it is high impact. Which leaves intentional vs careless. One is straight to the tribunal, the other is 3 weeks down to 2. Not sure if he has a record which needs to be factored in.

They'll just work backwards with the intention of giving him 2 weeks so he is free to play Hawthorn, and come up with a grading which suits that penalty.

Hodge and Lewis both added penalties for 'potential to cause damage'. If ever there was a potential to cause damage that was it. Watch it come back with Low Impact though...
And it's started. In the Age "Fortunately for Franklin, Edwards returned to the field after passing a concussion test, which means the impact of the hit is likely to be deemed low." Surely has to be at least medium if not high. Player got smashed clean off his feet. Low impact is a graze. This was head on.

Yep....Feet left the ground n all...Plus the afters with Buddy landing on his head with his hip.

Intentional, reckless, high-impact with Huge potential to cause serious damage.

Media, We await you the annointed & appointed AFL lackey 'lynch-mob'.o_O
Lynch mob (Andrew Wu) says low impact.

You enjoy your footy soft ? I mean fair enough you are a Freo supporter but that's just crap
No he's just being john Ralph who was calling for Gibson and Stratton to be suspended for tummy taps.

Surely if he continued bending down to pick the ball up he would have been charged under the new ducking interpretation? At the speed he was travelling pivoting and throwing his body over the back first would have been difficult.

People saying he played the man are blind. He was chasing the ball and made the decision to pull out and brace when he saw Edwards coming towards him.

It's a week but to claim he didn't have eyes for the ball is crap.

Lingy on the Tele throwing figures all over the place for both Tippet and Buddy. Gotta say Lingy is a bit of flog.
He's become the new Harley - join Seven and become a total knob.
Must've been a hall monitor at school the way he dobs.

Carey showing some common sense. One of the better commentators at the moment.
It's sad when he's the only sensible one of all the Seven special commentators.

You're right, he never took his eyes off it, Edwards I mean. Buddy had locked his eyes on Edwards before running over the ball.

Edwards is a key player for Richmond.

Yeah but he was originally chasing a ball running away from him. When he noticed Edwards, he lifted his eyes and braced for impact.

You can argue he should have continued to pursue the ball but let's not act like he lined Edwards up from 10 metres.

Edit: whoops, looking at the alternative angle in shepp's gif he may have lifted his eyes a touch early

Are you kidding? He runs past the ball with his eyes up at Edwards, it's not a contest between him and Edwards, he actually overtakes the ball. I don't think he is overly dirty or anything, just has brain farts and this was one of them.

Sorry, just saw your edit. Does look a bit silly from Buddy
