In the side I am looking at Butcher is named at full forward so I don't exactly see your point.

I wish Butcher was named at CHB because I think he needs a career change and he showed against Westies that he can play in defence. Hopefully Hocking will show a bit of foresight, make a change, and continue the Butcher in defence experiment a little longer.

If Butcher showed a bit in a key defensive role I would give him a twelve month extension but if the Club's thinking is, Butcher as an AFL forward or nothing, I would let him walk and concentrate on others.

Named ?? And ??

Where has Butcher been playing recently ?? In the back half...allowing the side to play through Harvey in the forward line.

Given our abundance of ( now fit ) talls to play in defence for the Maggies, if Butch doesn't line up at ff on sunday as named, then it will be even more clear what the future of the future will be at the end of the season.

I hope he lines up in the goal square takes some grabs and slots a few, but we all know what can unfortunately happen if he shanks the first one.

Talk is cheap. Time for some action.

Who?
Pro-Butch v No-Butch.
What? Rumble in the Port.
When? Final siren. Sunday, June 28.
Where? Behind the N.L. Williams Memorial scoreboard, Alberton Oval.
Why? To sort this shit out like men/women/transgender once and for all.

You guys bring the pain. I'll bring the popcorn...

Another way of looking at it is that we played three decent sides. Geelong, Hawthorn, and Adelaide. And he kicked two goals. Quick, give him 800K stat.

He's had his chance, and he's only produced one belter. He is a failed experiment.
I'm sorry, which one of his 3 4+ goal games was the belter?

What would your expected return be for a 20 game KPF?

Please don't compare Sarge to Butch. Sarge can easily play another 2 years based just on his previous reputation and he's had only one game where his kicking was way off. And Sarge is an absolute master of kicking for goal.

I'm still torn about Butch but the amount of times I've heard "this is Butch's year" and not come to any fruition is getting a bit too much. He was trade bait last year and no one had a look at him. It's a shame but I think this year is the end of the road for his AFL career
I have to compare sarge to butch...

Butch at the moment is his only replacement...

career wise sarge is daylights ahead obviously...

By the way....when did Sarge become good?

I would argue the last two times Butcher has been dropped from our side in the AFL, it's been harsh and/or detrimental to his development as an AFL player.
The trouble is selecting him has been equally detrimental.

6 goals was a belter.

Look, I would like nothing more then to see this bloke tear shit up, cement an AFL spot and be our primary KPF for the next decade. I just genuinely do not believe it will happen. I think due partly to us placing him on the selection/non-selection round-a-bout and partly due to his kicking murdering his confidence, that he will not ever get to a reasonable level. And reasonable is all anyone really wants from the bloke, I do not expect him to be Cameron or Franklin. Just to not be a liability, which with his kick, is what is he right now.

Ah okay I thought maybe you'd have considered his 4 goal game where he polled a Brownlow vote.

I'm at the point now where I'll very much doubt he'll make it, I just want the people who have been howling him down for 3 years to acknowledge that the coaches stuffed up his development.

If we're ruling a line through Butcher, we need to ensure we don't make the same mistakes with Harvey. That's the most important thing now.

(btw, bags of 4 goals in Lance Franklin's first 30 games = 1)
But how long did it take him to play that 30 games? Within 40 games Hawthorn played of being drafted? Butcher at times hasnt been treated well, but he has picked up a lot of injuries at the wrong time.

There is no point in comparing Butcher to Franklin. For a start Butcher's games, because of injury, illness and poor form have been very stop-start. In 5 years he has played 24 games whereas Franklin played 34 in 2 years. The thing to look at is what he is doing now and he must be consistent with it. He played a pretty good game against West with 7 marks and a goal. Although it was only one he played the majority of the game away from the goals. As an early draft pick who has finally had a proper preseason we would want him to fire and be a foil or replacement for Schulz.

The lack of success in 2 top ten draft picks is really hurting the club. One failure is ok but 2 is a disaster.
Its not ideal, but I would not call it a disaster. Anyway I don't class Moore as a failure. He still needs to lift his game I acknowledge, however I firmly beleive that he has been a victim of injury and the bloody umpire touching thing hurt him badly, as he would have been straight in as Wines went out injured.

I was happy to have Butch 'earn' his spot in the team half a dozen weeks ago but now with our season effectively in ruin, what do we have to lose by giving him a 10 week block to make or break his career post-bye? We have a desperate need to develop a key position forward and despite all of his ups and downs everyone here has seen what Butch is capable of at his best. Tell him that he's got 10 weeks no matter how many kicks he gets, get Schulz up the ground and out of his way and make him own the forward line.

So let's compare him to Schulz on the front-end.

- Former first round pick
- Off-field issues
- Admitted he got ahead of himself early and then sooked when things weren't panning out
- Traded for pick 8000 & Mitch Farmer after 71 games & 7 seasons in the system

We got a hold of him at age 25 and despite the club experiencing a slew of awful on and off-field circumstances, saw him flourish with a bit of faith and confidence.

Butcher is 23 and we've categorically failed to persist with him at every turn. Twice in the Hinkley era we've committed to him at the start of a season only to drop him after 3 and 1 game, despite him being in okay form overall.

Butcher, Butcher, Butcher, Butcher, Butcher, Butcher, Butcher, Butcher, MUSHROOOM!

Schulz could always kick so the comparison is pointless

Lewis Johnston is one of the greatest kicks of all-time. Is he delivering pizza now?

When Jay Schulz arrived at Alberton he was sub-potato.

I prefer Rex Hunt singing
Butcha, Butcha man,
I've got to be,
A Butcha man

Yeah that viral meningitis he gave me last year was a kick in the teeth
Did you really get it, or just stirring? How long did it knock you around for?

Schulz's first 7 games in Port colours, before he broke out with a bag of 7 against North at the Dome

9.5dpg, 4.28mpg, 8 goals/7 behinds

Lucky Tredrea went down and we persisted with him, hey.

I would argue against Schulz being a total spud at the tiggers, he was regularly used as a decoy for Richo, and he played a number of games at chb when he wasn't doing that - it's pretty hard to hit the scoreboard regularly from there.

His potential is obvious now. He just needed to regain his perspective, confidence and make a forward line his own.

But when he arrived at Alberton well into his career in exchange for a half-eaten pie, his stock was as low as anyone's. And as above, it took him a good third of a season to have anything over and above what was to that point a typical Jay Schulz game.

I love when my opinion is also Tribeys opinion as it generally means I am spot on, and it's not another Newton/Bass/Webb
