If we secure a player that averages 14 games a year, his most obvious backup on our list becomes irrelevant?

Yeah i'm not sure you can claim that unless you are some sort of magical ankle doctor offering your services to the club. We know Dixon will have to be managed.
So our most obvious back-up for a Forward who rucks occasionally, is a bloke who doesn't ruck and cant kick goals? Harvey deserves first crack at being that player, Butcher has been nothing but a disappointment.

So I'm not willing to give up on him yet. I guess I'm looking at Butcher and expecting 2nd KPF level output, and to be honest that's what we're getting him. Instead of comparing him with Josh Kennedy and Lance Franklin, compare him with Ben Brown.
This is it. Schulz is not and never been a contested marking KPF our smalls can hang around. Assuming Schulz goes I'm coming around more and more to playing Butcher next year, alongside Dixon, at the expense of one of our numerous Half Back Flankers. Broadbent is the sacrificial lamb in the team below, but take your pick of him, Impey or Jonas depending on match-ups week to week.

B: J. Trengove A. Carlile T. Jonas
HB: J. Pittard J. Hombsch N. Krakouer
C: H. Hartlett O. Wines J. Polec
HF: B. Ebert J. Butcher J. Westhoff
F: A. Monfries C. Dixon C. Wingard
R: P. Ryder, T. Boak, R. Gray
Int: M. White, S. Gray, J. Impey, B. Ah Chee

So we'd have:
KPD's : Trengove, Carlile, Hombsch
Lock down defenders : Jonas, Impey
Rebounding defenders : Pittard, Krakouer, with Hartlett off the back of square / HB line
Inside grunt : Wines, Ah Chee, S. Gray
Freak midfield : R. Gray
Outside mids : Polec, White, Ebert
Ruck : Ryder mostly with Trengove, Hoff and Dixon to pinch hit
Athletic KPF / mid : Westhoff
Contesting KPF's who can bring to ground if don't mark : Dixon, Butcher
Small forwards : Wingard, Monfries

Butcher in the side provides multiple benefits IMO:
  • Besides contesting himself, two contesting KPF targets makes it very hard to match up on. Given he tends to keep his feet more than his opponent he makes a great foil, as the opposition would want to put a small near him as well. If Butcher and Dixon both cop a tall defender and a small to try and guard space in front or at their feet that's leaving Wingard and/or Monfries free.
  • Butcher in the side, without Lobbe in to ruck, allows Dixon some time (maybe 10% of a game) in the ruck without losing a contested KPF presence or forcing Hoff back.
  • If Trengove is required to pinch hit we can chuck him back for short spells if the opposition has a tall forward line.
The above side would fill me with a lot of confidence that our personnel issues of 2015 (too few KPF's - with until Butch in, none that bring the smalls into it, lost outside run, too few inside mids) are all addressed. Of course there's still the mental issues of our players not doing the hard stuff for themselves or teammates until the season was cooked.

It's strange that people think getting Charlie Dixon would be the end for Butch when he would be the perfect foil for Dixon. Charlie, move the pack 2 metres to the left, Charlie move the pack 2 metres to the right.

It's just a jump to the left ........ And then a step to the right

Butch takes a mark, fakes a hammy, Charlie standing right by takes the kick, butch makes a miraculous recovery....

Have been looking at previous Port games .. watched the 2013 game against St Kilda again..
Butcher had two marks and kicked the first two goals ... bring that form back butcher ..

Earlier this year Titus O'Reily posted (obviously jokingly) about Collingwood engaging a sports psychologist to work with Travis Cloke, and after the assessment was done club deciding the the best option was the sports psychologist taking his kicks on goal for him.

Charlie move the goal posts two meters to the right. Sorry I had to.

Because people like Robbie actually know how to kick a ball thus the tinkering required to straighten/improve his set shots is far less than someone who still has absolutely no concept of how to drop the ball from hand to foot.
Butcher's field kicking seems to prove he can also kick a ball.

When Butcher kicks properly, it goes straight. When he doesn't kick properly, it looks horrendous. That's really the only difference. It looks bad.

Quite simply he needs to hold and kick the ball at goal like he does for his field kicks.

It's clear there's a difference.

He can't continue to be a player that holds the ball differently when kicking at goal.... Like a Gunston for example.

If it were that simple I'm sure we could have sorted it by now.

Butcher has been taught how to kick, the problem is he is mentally weak and panics instead of thinking through his routine and goes back to the style he is comfortable with when he is under pressure.

Other players do the same thing, but their default set shot kicks are miles better.

Nah a couple years ago he was doing proper set shots, but I think he and the club might have given up on it because it made no difference on game day. Then they tried just playing on and snapping around the body, and that didn't work either, so now he just does whatevers comfortable. lol.

Restricted free agent next year, bloody key position players do take longer to develop though.

People will shout me down for this, but I think we can learn a bit from the Crows forward structure this year and especially the role played by Tom Lynch.

If we get Dixon, then I'd like us to work on Butcher developing into an old-fashioned Darren Smith type CHF, who works hard enough up the ground to link with his teammates and provide avenues out of defence, but also creates goal assists in the forward 50.

If less emphasis was placed on Butcher's kicking and more on his leading (which needs work), roaming and general work rate, then I believe he could still be a valuable commodity for us playing higher up the ground.
