just wrote off my car tonight (making it the second car I have damaged beyond repair), in a accident that was totally my fault. And whilst I don't want to bore anyone with the gruesome details, I will need to get a new car.

I had a 1993 Ford Laser that cost me nearly 11K in 2000. I will get 10,000 from the insurance company. What is the best kind of small car to get for a single male? Anyone know the reliable types? I was thinking maybe a Hyundai Excel, or something, because they seem pretty cheap.

I really don't know a lot about cars, and I was hoping somebody could pass on some advice for small used cars in the 7,000-9,000 range.

Ohh come on! You're a 26 yr old single male and you are thinking of buying an Excel? Are you gay or something? Spoil yourself and buy a high performance car. Get a Clubby, or a Rexie or maybe a 200sx

small used reliable car...

nah, i'd skip the cheap hyundai's...

get a late 90's japanese model... like a honda civic, toyota corolla, mazda astina...

Well, whether I'm single or not is beside the point. The point is, I don't have kids or anything, so I don't see the need to get a big car. I just want something reliable and cheap.

I've got a VL commodore you can buy.

Reliable and cheap, reasonable performance without huge petrol bills. With the other $5500 you can redo the engine ;)

Have a look at a Ford Telstar/Mazda 626 rather than a Hyundai Eggshell.

Waste waste waste.. with $10K get a hold of a mate who knows a bit and get your arse to the auctions.. you'll pick up an ex govt fleet car with mild k's on it, fully log booked and well cared for (working out how well it the job of the friend)

If it's small you want steer clear of excels.. tuna cans on wheels.. they should be recalled and destroyed.
If you prefer Euro small the early 1990's Audi 80's currently go for anywhere up to $11K depending.. they're a 4 cylinder 2L engine.. cheap to register and cheap to run

The Laser's still a good option, I had a Mazda 323 E5 Type R and that little thing was the dogs bollocks.. the Laser TX3 Turbo is the Ford variant.. very nice to drive

If ye want a little rice car type deal look at the the Nissan Pulsar or 180SX, Mitsubishi Mirage or Lancer, Mazda 323/626 or a mid 90's Subaru Impreza

Hope that helps a little.

Hmmm, I seem to recall someone commenting when I posted here a year ago about writing off my car.

Buy a panel van.

Prefer a later model Falcon myself but any model is good for some action.

Exactly what I was going to respond.....I just got my car from the auctions 2 weeks ago.....Got my other halfs car there a year ago.....Why pay at a dealership when you can cut the middle man out and save $$$?....And if the car is less than 3 years old/<100,000km (As mine is) you have a factory warranty still.
The cars r top notch and cheap....

The best are Auto Group (Brooklyn) and Fowles (Altona) in Melbourne. Watch out though, coz alot of the people who work there are complete b..@stards......

www.auto-group.com.au
www.fowles.com.au
, to look at whats coming up in the auctions.....

Nissan Sylvia.

You can get a 92 model for around 10 grand which basically has everything, power windows, sunroof, cd stacker, etc.

Auctions is deffintiley the way to go.

I bought my car at the Auctions 2 years ago, a 91 model Ford Telstar TX5 with 120,000 on the clock, got it for 7k and didn't have to do anything to it except register and insure it. My mate who is a used car dealer offered me 9 grand for it straight away. On the other hand you can get some duds at the auctions, luck of the draw make sure you have someone who knows something about cars.

Go Japanese not korean (excel) because they are peices of ****.

Silvia's are a waste of money by the time you've got them on the road you've paid a whole lot more than you bargained for.

So again Japanese is the way to go- Pulsar, Astina, Impreza, Corolla, Laser's are still a good reliable car aswell.

Get a 4 wheel drive, for 10k you can pick up something fairly decent, once you sit in a car high enough that can enable you to see ahead in the traffic you wont go back to a average car.

Then you can also hoon around on the weekends down the beach or bush.

You get a great view of cars with decent gearing and a decent power to weight ratio zipping off in front of you.

Ever noticed how people always cut 4 wheel drives off?
Because sitting behind them restricts your view of the road and is therefore dangerous.

Thanks Spidey. You were the only one who asked whether I was okay! :p (and I am)

Anyway, thanks for everyones advice. I took Royal Blue And White's advice and Arch11's and went to the auto group auctions in Brooklyn. Picked up a Holden Apollo for 8K.

It's green. And I was referring to this thread, in reference to my personal well-being. I remember and appreciate your concern, Jacs!
