(2) List management:

(3) Coaching

Quite frankly, it's been a disaster. The change of gameplan, unable to settle on a forward structure, the use of Thilthorpe, the panicked selections and on game day, the coaches are spectators in the box.

Player development is close to non existent. The spending spree on a bunch of B graders from other clubs has stifled the development of guys like Edwards, while a number of younger players seem to be going backwards.

If we lose to Geelong after the bye, we can just about write the year off and start planning for 2027.

We (the coaches) seem so rigid in the structure that they want but no clue how to consistently implement it with the players we have and their strengths and weaknesses.

Very well said.

Max is concerning, is it a player who's development has stalled, is it coaching or is it a bit of both perhaps ?? Our backline currently is full of guys who cant kick.
He was very good against North. Didn't watch last night, but I reckon he's getting back to his best after what looks like a knee injury.

He did have an impact when he went on ball late, we took too long to make the call IMO. Whether thats because we are so rigidly sticking to our structures or whether we are trying to protect him, who knows.

If its the latter then he shouldnt be there, if its the former then its another nail in the Nicks coffin.

It probably helped him a bit to move up the ground where he's not having to compete in the air so much. But even so, he is not moving well, not playing well and is a shell of the player he is when fit.

After missing last week and with the bye next week, it seems like it would have been an opportunity to not play him and give him a solid rest for 3-4 weeks.

Butts = handbrake when needing to move the ball on quickly.
For all the fear Keane puts in supporters when he has the ball, his chaotic movement is definitely being missed.

It's not as easy to set up for one of his kicks as it is for Butts, Borlase and Laird. If they have the ball, move 40m down the line. But no rush, you've got 10 seconds to get there by the time they kick it. We go so stale when they have the ball.

You just know there'll be zero forward planning in that instance.

Like Adam Kelly said before we lost to Richmond two years ago, "we pick our sides for this week, not beyond that"

Infuriatingly dumb.

I'm looking forward to Jones and Sholl getting games just weeks before they are delisted.

Which players need a go before we delist them?

This is the disappointing part for me.
We have basically given up on developing our own guys for the recruiting of older average players.

The real concern is getting these older B graders on 5-6 year contracts, just madness.

But I'm loathed to be critical of players with our coaching setup at the moment, I'm pretty sure that's not helping many players be their best.

Positives

Berry (but in a top shelf midfield he'd be like 4th or 5th choice and would have a lot more quality around him).

Dawson (esp. given personal challenges).

Cook (generally one of the standouts of the year).

Milera (standout).

McAndrew (standout)

Okay

Rachele (needs to drink less bathwater).

Rankine (took a while to get into it, looked to be building, hopefully he doesn't get demoted to 'screwed by injury').

Meh

Pedlar.

Taylor (hopefully building towards okay).

Nick Murray.

Edwards (solid debut but need to see more of him).

Tex (one standout game, otherwise pretty anonymous and his presence often leads to a questionable forward line structure).

Peatling.

Nank (alright past few weeks, but lives in fear of the dreaded yo-yoing).

Butts.

Turray (has showed a bit of promise combined with some very, very, lean games).

Screwed by Injury

Ah Chee (very close to an outright disappointment).

Draper.

Curtin (hopefully building towards okay).

Thilthorpe (management very questionable).

Soligo (very disappointing start, hopefully building towards okay - but perhaps grading on a curve because of heart thing).

Hinge.

Fog (hopefully building towards okay).

Keane.

Disappointments/Bad

Keays (kinda close to putting him in the next category down, TBH).

Michalanney (remember when he was going to be the next Ben Hart?).

Bond (not sure he's AFL standard).

Worrell (gets a lot of it, but doesn't do much with it and defensively very shaky).

ANB (has his moments, probably actually belongs in 'meh' but is frustrating that a senior player with premiership experience is often so fumbly and ineffective).

Laird (there's more to football than getting 15+ possessions in 250 consecutive games or whatever).

Borlase (probably par for a depth 4th KPD, but being a depth 4th KPD means he's pretty shaky at AFL level).

Maley (probably about par for a young depth tall, but needs to learn how to kick).

Cumming (like ANB is probably actually 'meh' but am grading harshly as he's an import).

Go Away, I Never Want to See You Again

Jones.

Sholl (we haven't actually seen him this year, but still belongs in this category).

O'Brien.

N/A (I don't watch SANFL)

Welsh.

Ryan.

Marsh.

Dowling (papers stamped, apparently).

Cotton.

Ludowyke.

I think everyone is being too harsh on Ah Chee.

Injured in the SOO preseason. Comes back and does some nice stuff in first game before getting injured. Has like 2 months off and in his first game back is injured again but still kicks 2 goals.

Frustrating he’s been injured but not sure 100% blame is on Ah Chee. Has looked okay when playing and deserves a decent run before is judged.

Popping up and doing some nice things/kicking a few goals is all we can really expect for a role player.

Wasn’t worth a first rounder Brisbane were demanding though.

I’m thinking a review that starts with one or two word assessment and then some rationale/detail.

Ah Chee - disappointing- role player at Lions and spoken of by some like we were getting another Rankine. Injury has robbed us of finding out though, hopefully we’re over that.

Max - extremely disappointing - gone backwards after looking like being so much more. Don’t think his spot is in doubt, but wouldn’t think twice if he missed due to gastro.

McAndrew - a revelation - but signs of fatigue starting to show. Bye at a good time, but him less rucking last 2-3 weeks surely wouldn’t have killed Murray.

Berry - extremely solid - not going to say breakout like Rachele looked in the middle, but he’s been really good. Took him a while to start accumulating midfielder numbers, but he seems to be there now.

Milera - a standout - having an exceptional year. But I reckon him generating the number of disposals points to structural/strategy problems. I feel that he gets 5-8 too many each week and Laird about 20 too many.

Dawson - toughest of years - but he’s stood up unbelievably really. Just keeps going and going and getting the job done.
Who said Ah Chee was another Rankine lol. He is a lower end of top 15 player at Brisbane and lower end of top 10 player here. A very good role player, same as ANB.
