We waited for a week at Parkdale and discovered nothing was happening.

Last saturday the umpire's escort from AJAX fronted the umpire after the game. He abused him, pushed his finger into his chest then pushed his elbow into the umpire.

Stay tuned to the vafa's findings..................

I don't think you'll get a proper and reasonable finding.

From the outcome (allegedly AJAX received a small fine), I would think that Sholly & Co. have set a very dangerous precedent going forward.

The league tries hard to recruit umpires and promises to protect them (at least that's what they tell you and I). They even made a new rule where an umpire can award a free kick to a team if the opposition's supporters are being too critical... - I'm not sold on that one yet, but in the scheme of things it doesn't matter.
In a nutshell there's been a lot of chest puffing from HQ over the past few years about the importance of the men in white for out great game, and how it is both ours and their great responsibility to ensure we can attract and retain quality umpires... that's fair enough too.

But where to now?

Following the Ajax v Parkdale game there was a report lodged on the umpire's report sheet about an AJAX official (the umpires escort of all things) 'allegedly' pushing, finger poking and screaming (no better make that 'talking very loudly' just to be safe) about being a 'cheat' - even giving him the most un-vafa-like comment of "you're not welcome in the rooms either"! (Boo)

This harassment by the 'official' was so far in the Ump's face all the way off the ground, that the Parkdale Umpire Escort had to become a bit of a security guard against his counterpart and protect the ump.

Early the following week, I've been told, the umpire requested for an investigation to occur and the league spoke with someone at AJAX, that was it, job done... no tribunal appearance, nothing. And I'm lead to believe that not one person from Parkdale (let alone the Umpire Escort) was even contacted to discuss the matter, at least to provide a statement of what happened.

The result... it gets brushed under the table with a small fine and the reasoning of "it was out of character".

Other players, clubs etc would cop a hiding for this kind of behavior. Just look at what happenned with the St Bede's v OEG melee - which didn't even includes the umps. The OEG coach was booted for the year.

Other leagues would hand out very hefty fines and more likely large suspensions, especially with what's been happening recently.

But No, not us... the matter is now closed.

What happens next time a club official "abuses" an umpire? It would seem that all you'll have to have to do is say "it was out of character", hand over a few $100 bills and off you go... I mean, if it's good enough for Ajax, then surely it's good enough for the rest of us? Precedent set Round 17, 2009.

Oh, and a special note to the umpires... please don't feel intimidated or threatened when someome starts pushing you, screaming at you and calling you a cheat... that's now normal practice in the great VAFA.

...but we will still protect you!

Maybe its me, but if the umpire was happy with the outcome, presuming it was an apology and a fine, then that's where the issue should finish.

Umpires escort is a voluntary position which is sometimes difficult to fill. I would chalk this one up as being the result of an umpire not being precious(which should be commended). getting the apology they sought/deserved and moving on with life.

As should you.

Only if your name starts with G and ends with D

Because that sets a great example doesn't it... especially for potential umpires and kids who may have witnessed it. They would walk away thinking... hey, look what I can look forward too each week. It doesn't look very good for the league either?

And..... therefore, if you agree to perform such a task, you then have a right cover an umpire in spittle.

Grum, believe me, I'm not losing any sleep over this... and I'm already 3 weeks ahead of you, so rather than me moving on, perhaps you need to catch up.

Someone in an earlier post asked a question, I simply provided an answer based on some conversations I've had and the info I got.

IF, and I repeat IF ,the umpire is happy with the result - I agree good on him, but this is not just about the umpire.

It's about the process, or more to the point, lack of process employed that produced a sub-standard result.

I was simply pointing out the precedent the AMMO's have now set, which would now need to be followed in similar instances if they happen in the future - and in addition to that I only wondered if another club would have suffered a similar fate.

Enough said.

Remember it is the ajax footy club we are talking about, they can get away with murder in the VAFA. its disgraceful. The club should be heavily fined and the escort in question by banned from attending games. :thumbsu:

The greatest justice is that they aren't going to be playing finals this year, and lost 6 of their last 7 matches.

Also another congrautulations to Zach Alcott on making his return to the ones after a year absence. The athletic ruckman is best known for his contested ball efforts as he has been doing in the 2s.

Sorry, couldn't get there on Sat, Bazza, how did Zach go?

If what you say is true, then the penalty was totally inadequate.
A couple of hundred dollar fine is nothing compared to having a player sent off or reported for doing the same thing.
If you are going to put your hand up to help the club, then you take on the responsibilty of that position and you and club is resposible for your conduct.
The club needs to ensure that their volunteers don't have "out of character" episodes. And, for HQ to slap it on the wrist and accept an apology then they are being neglectful of their duties as well.
HQ preaches the message regarding umpires but do not follow through with that message.
Memo to M Sholley:
I whole heartly apologize for calling the umpire a white maggot and a cheat on Saturday. It was totally out of character as was when I belted my girlfriend across the chops after having a skinful on Saturday night when she picked me up at 5am after our end of season celebrations and refused to find KFC that was open. Can you please reverse the send off and give my ex-missus a call and tell her she should forgive me as well.
Thanks for your understanding,

Righto boys lets move on. Anyone who has had any dealing with the VAFA in the past will understand that there is a vast difference between punishments for similar offences, but given its finals time and Ajax are nowhere to be seen, lets talk about that instead....

So two big games ahead;

Oakleigh v Beaumaris - Strange game in that I would tip Oakleigh at Oakleigh, and Beauy at Beauy.....so my tip is purely based on the ground, and i think Beauy might enjoy it more and get over the line. Either way its a massive clash between the two biggest exponents of the 1990's blonde tips in the Ammos. Surfer Blonde by 23 over Sicknut Blonde for mine.

Caulfield v MHSOB - What a rivalry. 5 years ago these two sides met in the corresponding game, and Caulfield triumphed...only for MHSOB to turn the tables two weeks later in the big one. History repeating? I think not - Caulfield are the benchmark this year, and have been beaten MHSOB home and away. Caulfield to get up at the very suitable Junction and put themselves back in B grade.

Oakleigh v Beaumaris - I have been confident all year that the Sharks would head back to B Grade. But after last weekend I am am not so sure. Oakleigh have come charging home and the Sharks have stumbled. I can't help but think that the Krushers will get this job done. On current form they will do it easily.

Caulfield v MHSOB - Neither were impressive on the weekend, but the High loss was pretty ugly. Can't see Caulfield losing this one as they do seem to match up with the High well.

Ajax are where they deserve to be, nowhere. I'd love to see them in D grade. I'd go and watch them play in the west somewhere just to see them get smacked up and the look on their pathetic supporters' face when they get pulverised. In regards to finals, good call from Template, sicknut blonde haha, but i think they will beat Beauy and CGS to beat MHSOB.

im a bit worried about these CGS boys. many played in last years Under 19 losing grand final where they choked to pieces.
Beaumaris 15.8.98 def CGS 13.16.94
Beau Goals R.Cathcart 4
Best On Ground R.Cathcart

wouldnt count it out...

The hottest side in C Grade at the minute would have to be Oakleigh. Get past them first and then you can have a shot at either High or the Fields you are so worried about....

I would like to congratulate Johhny Aitken on a terrific week in the record as it found it very informative and humourous.

Good to see Caulfield still know how to choke 5 years on.

Private school boys that don't like it tough and willing, Oakleigh will deliver them a straight sets outing from 2009.

Couldn't happen to a better bloke than Keano15 - muppet

Goalless at the city end in the first half, MHSOB with the first 5 goals, Caulfield the next 4.

The High creeped further ahead to go into the fourth qtr with a 4 goal lead and kicked away in the end.

Very interesting matchup in the prelim, whoever wins tomorrow.

Bazza the Lamb and Chicken Gyros was delicious today. I will bring you a leftover wrap tomorrow. The lamb spit will be a winner if i get the approval to sell off the back of the truck next year. My prices would definately be lower than any canteen at Shark Park. Hopefully the Sharks get through to the granny so i can prepare one for Johnny Aitken...I know how much he was disappointed with the canteen pricing at Shark Park. He will love the Lamb Gyros!
