While I think it was poor of Melb to only give him 1 year (his body is in very good nick for his age, and let's be honest, Melbourne aren't struggling for cap space and he was on the vets list anyway), I'm wondering what he's trying to do.

If he was going to GC would have done it earlier for sure.

You would think he's only off to a club where he can get a flag in the next 2 years. I would think the Doggies are out now they've taken on Sherman's backended deal, so it's probably down to Pies, Saints and the Dawks (don't think the latter is a 'premiership contender' though, even though they think they are).

While I don't think we need him, and I'm usually against recruiting players of his age, I hope he doesn't get to the Saints-given how weak their bottom 6 are, he would be a signficant improvement for them.

He's a bit slow for what the Saints need, but their history suggests they will nab him. Saints seem to get their players of need a year too late. King, Lovett, Smith, all for different reasons , had passed their best when they got to St. Kilda. Bruce will be similar. Very classy player though, and I agree, I would not be happy if this was one they got right, as already now, I think they'll play off in the GF again, and that would mean we won't, again. We are struggling to keep Wojo on our list so can't see us going for a player older than him.

Re: Cam Bruce-what is he playing at?

He wants more money and a first team guarantee.

He should give Mumford a call.

Re: Cam Bruce-what is he playing at?

Can only think he has a 2 year offer somewhere.

Hope its the Hawks or the Saints. A superannuation package ... like Burgoyne or Ray.

Cobbling a side together with imports is no substitute for hard work and good development programs.

The only positions that offer good results for shortish term imports are rucks - (Ottens , Jolly) or a kid who has yet to find his niche ......Harley and Mooney spring to mind and Rodan. Other clubs have their successes with kids who didn't quite fit too.

Re: Cam Bruce-what is he playing at?

I don't see what he gives St Kilda.

Precise disposal by hand and/or foot? No

Hardness at the pill? No

A player who has proven he can kick goals as a medium sized forward? No

They are better off giving one of their young players like Amitage a genuine crack than recruting a washed up player like Bruce.

To be fair Lovett wasnt passed his best he had just come off his best season. He just screwed up big time in the off season.

Agree VEEDUBS, certainly past his best, but I'm sure the Saints will still do it because they love to top up, and it will help them. As a half forward type he will demand more respect than McQualter and Eddy do, and hence will draw some of the footy which will help their better forwards, and if he plays in defence Gilbert can go forward.

Rather than being a 'Bruce is crap hack etc' because he's not, it's more of an indictment on how weak a few of the Saints players are (Eddy, McQualter and Peake, to name a few) that you'd consider recruiting a 31yo over the top of them.

I'm guessing his move isn't so much about money, after all he will have been getting very good coin the last few years, and he was on the vets list, so they could comfortably have given him a lot in 2011, it would have been than he wanted a guarantee he wouldn't get McDonalded in 12 months, and they wouldn't give it, so he walked.

Surely he couldn't go to Collingwood!!! I thought that buying Jolly and Ball would have smashed their salary cap, then they go and pick up Tarrant and Krakouer as well.......Surely someone has to start looking at them. I smell another Carlton 2002 incident.

Cam Bruce has gone mad, Cam Bruce has gone mad, Cam Bruce has gone completely maaaaaaadddddddddddd

This is a more appropriate thread title than the one on our board. Strange decision. GC is my bet.

Nup. When you look at Fraser going (and he was on about 380k this year) and Medhurst and Lockyer and OBree, they would be able to fit Bruce in the cap fine.

But they won't do it, Malthouse likes youth (and Bruce wouldn't want to go to play Pies VFL) and they'd prefer to use their money to fend off GWS.

Rossy on the other hand, he loves his recycled rejects. I can see it happening.

Cousins out , Bruce in.... or Hawthorn like his type. Sydney always seems to like the sickly sweet smell a the matured grape , maybe they would be willing to offer him 2

Shame when loyal guys go to the dark side near the end but then in a perfect world they wouldn't be denied games by kids not currently as good . Melb is just doing what they should have done a long time ago , make hard choices with players that have been loyal but ultimately been failed footballers
