He will post at 3:30am when we are all asleep
Think About It GIF by Identity

A big preseason and he could explode as a full time mid. The sky's the limit if he gets a clean run with injuries and gets really fit.

I think with his contested marking ability Rayner is going to be a mid-forward rather than a f/t mid. Rayner doesn’t quite have the kicking skills of the likes of Martin, Stringer, DeGoey at this stage but he has that same strength through the hips that allows him to win big contests in key areas.

Rayner has put together a very decent season as a 22yo off a knee reco. He averages as follows - with a comparison to Isaac Heeney, who plays a very similar role...

Disposals: Rayner 15 v Heeney 17

Goals + Goal Assists: Rayner 2.0 v Heeney 2.6

Tackles: Rayner 2.1 v Heeney 4.4

Contested Possessions: Rayner 7.3 v Heeney 8.2

Contested Marks: Rayner 0.7 v Heeney 0.8

Clearances: Rayner 2.4 v Heeney 2.4

Score Involvements: Rayner 5.0 v Heeney 6.7

Rayner is 22yo whereas Heeney, who is considered a star perhaps rather than a superstar, is 26yo. You can see Rayner is tracking to get to somewhere near Heeney’s level at least.

Best game I've seen from him. While most the other Lions looked like crumbling under pressure he looked so steady and assured. Never in doubt that snap from the boundary.

Ive been a doubter but that could be the breakout game

4 of our 5 second half goals were Rayner
Was nice to see someone stand up when the game was on the line. He has been a slow burn that's for sure, but last night was a great example of why he was considered (arguably) the consensus number one pick. That ability to take games by the scruff of the neck and drag his team over the line. Lets hope it continues and he has a big finals series. He had some pretty important moments in that finals win against Richmond in 2020. We want more of that Cam!

Hopefully he's beginning to believe.

His game last night reminded me a bit of De Goey. Big impact whenever he got it, very strong and un tacklable, took contested marks, stood up in big moments with game changing goals.

That's the player he was drafted to be. Just needs to do it more consistently.

Still not clean off the deck late in the piece but that will come with a full pre season and another running program under his belt. Once he’s fitter, look out.

I see a bit of Petracca in him. Strong in the contest and a powerful kick.

Petracca at the same age was getting 20 touches and a goal a game and the question mark was whether he could build the endurance to put up regular midfield numbers. From 2020 onward he's been one of the stars of the comp.

Rayner is at 15 touches and a goal a game this year. Don't think he'll ever be a high possession (25-30 a game) player, but he's definitely got some ways to go to reach his ceiling.

Spargo with a big 4 possessions and no goals tonight.

Danster’s pick 4 and pick 19 Fritsch and Spargo, got 8 touches between them v the Blues. 3 contested possessions. Between them.

Fritsch and Spargo combined v Carlton:

8 disposals

1 goal 1 behind

0 goal assists

3 contrested possessions

0 contested marks

3 score involvements

4 effective disposals

3 clangers

Give them credit for 12 tackles.

Earlier in the thread people laughing at Rayner v Fritsch. Various Melbourne supporters saying Rayner would not get a game for Melbourne. Right now, a Cam Rayner is precisely what Melbourne need in a forward line consisting of 6 scared weird little guys - apologies to Alex Neal-Bullen, make it 5 scared weird little guys.

You would now have to ask which Melbourne forward would get a game in Brisbane’s forward line….Rayner is kicking them both into a cocked hat at the moment.

Seriously a game like Melbourne v Carlton does show how useless these uncontested forwards can be, and why they are not worth premium picks.

Good example of how overrated Fritsch is. He gets on the end of it when the team is firing but when they're not he goes completely missing. Downhill skiier.

Writing off players too early is a national pastime and we've all done it, but it's particuarly dumb for a 22 year old who's missed an entire year of footy and who very clearly has enormous talent and no obvious impediments (off-field issues, poor trainer, injury prone, etc).

Reading this thread in 5 years time is going to be a lot of fun.

I think he can definitely get in that 20-30 a game range. Worth noting Cam is spending a lot of time in the forward line or around high half forward because we're electing to play an additional inside mid in Matho. Not playing a role that's conducive to high posession counts. As we see the likes of Zorko and Lyons leave the team, I suspect we'll see more of Rayner in the middle. Not quite 5050 midfwd, but 6040 is very realistic IMO.

Let me see if I understand this…

It’s now the forward’s job to kick it to themselves.

And Fritsch is ā€˜overrated’ because (1) he doesn’t do this, or is it (2) that he was quiet this week notwithstanding he’s going to kick at least 50 goals this year on top of 60 last year.
