People remember finals. If there was any doubt he is best 22 now and will be for a while.

But yes we do need more talent in the midfield , do we have another player that could do the role? Have look at Ling and Crowley your ideal if you run for ever ,with pace even better , clever , around 187/190 and strong as a bull.
Not sure this fits anyone on our list. Hunt is not quite there. So Guthrie is probably the best fit as the run with and we need to put time into Bews/Eardley as another small defender

He was one of the few players who could hold his head up on the weekend.

I think this thread should be put to bed.

Loved his game , emerging as a very strong athlete who knows how to play the defensive percentages and when to attack.
Great decision maker and cool , efficient disposal.
To come back into the side and play like that in a tight final speaks volumes , kudos to the young lad :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Didn't rate him that highly until probably midway through this season and now I think he's an absolute gun. Midfield for mine, I guess as an attacking tagger. Get Eardley/Bews/Thurlow into the backline.

I've always given him a bit of leeway when he's been a bit subpar over the journey, so happy to seem him stand up like he did on saturday.

Will be a very important part in our defensive group going forward.

I disagree, I see him becoming much more midfield, especially as guys like Bews start getting AFL time, and Scotty has indicated that will be the case. He's just got such amazing composure, ice in his veins when the pressure is on. I have seen a lot of people calling for him to be dropped in favour of Josh Hunt, they're wrong, Guthrie is so solid, so disciplined and always makes the right decisions. I would genuinely love for him to move into the midfield because with his skill set he could become a really dangerous tagger like Cornes, Ling or Kirk.

Watching Guthrie whenever he got the ball last night, the two words that came to mind were poise and composure. In a game where our disposal was often rushed and poor, it was very noticeable that he seemed to have more time than others, and always made good decisions with his ball use.

I think regarding the youngsters at the club we have had 3 good stories this year.

Motlop - gone up another level and now a very good player for us.

Blicavs - come from nowhere and done a good job but has a fair way to go. But looks like he could keep improving.

Guthrie - been very good all season.

If only we could add Simpson to that list I would have been pretty happy with the new guys in the team going forward. Given our aging list re seniors we probably needed 4 to stand up and be best 22 players that add a fair bit to the side.

We need the same number again next season IMO (GHS, Thurlow, Simpson and Murdoch are all reasonable bets).

Gun.
Will take another step next year IMO.
Just never does the wrong thing, it really is amazing just how composed and poised he is with the footy on the last line, under pressure, for a kid.
I was one of those who didn't rate him as highly as others (I still rated him, but not to the same level as some) but now I genuinely consider him top 15 at the Cats.
I hope though.. Watching the game last night I saw so many players in positions that they are doing well but aren't their preferred role or the role they really made themselves a player, Chappy/Bartel/SJ forward for eg, in the second half they went forward, where they should always be, and really showed why there were so good there, I hope though that Guthrie doesn't get given the same treatment, makes a name for himself in the backline carving up opposition forwards then gets transitioned into the midfield or something. I feel his best spot for himself AND for the team is doing exactly what he is doing now.

How was it when he was stuck in the pocket looking for options. Couldn't find any, decided "stuff this I'm going for it" and then cut two port players in half.

Breath taking.

Thats a career make or break type moment. Really has locked his spot now

Was great to watch, but I had my heart in my mouth at the time. Thought for sure he was going to get caught and pinged for holding the ball. Great judgment and execution though from the young man.

It's amazing how many of these threads we have, ripping the guy to threads then after 20-30 games he has most of those posters eating their words. Much akin to the Hawkins threads, glad to see Guthrie get going as he just has so much poise; it appears effortless.

Last night he looked incredibly composed, you wouldn't know he has less than 50 games under his belt.

You highlighted one of my favourite parts of the night. When others looked under pressure he just received the pill and took his time, found space and then delivered.

Kid has leadership written all over him.

Midfield PLEEEEEASE. Get Thurlow/Eardley/Bews blooded in the back pocket. If he can can start racking up 20+/game with his composure, work in close and decision making with an improving Caddy/Hyphen that totally changes the complexion of our midfield.

Selwood, Motlop, Guthrie, Caddy, Hyphen and another outside runner (Murdoch?) for 2015. Massive potential.

Loved Guthers game last night, class act in two finals. When he weaved out of the back pocket I just yelled "You're all class Guthrie"
