Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

No club gets smashed as much as Hawthorn does by the umpires. They already have a big lead as the club with the most free kicks handed against;26 to 12 on the weekend following a 21 to 12 smashing against north.

If Hawthorn were to get geelong's free ride from the umpires they would be close to top of the ladder; and this thread redundant.
Right

Check the figures after r5 mate. Stone motherless last on the differential!
Oh but "free kick Hawthorn"!!!!! What?!

Easy mistake to make for an Essendon fan. Thinks there's only been 4 rounds. Stupid article too, why sort by total instead of average when two teams have only played 4 rounds? Also this classic "the old adage 'free kick Hawthorn' no longer applies.". I suggest the author checks the stats in the years that 'adage' was being used. Been a long time since we were top 4 for free kick differential. As already mentioned, as long as it has been since Essendon won a final - in other words a ****ing long time. Don't worry, I'm sure 'free kick hawthorn' will make sense at some stage in the future, just as I'm sure Essendon will eventually win another final - just not any time soon.

Nice melt.

Nice melt.

Thanks. Did you like the way I managed to have a whinge about the umpires' treatment of Hawthorn over the last 16 years, and at the same time make a reference to the drug cheats' years since winning a final? I did. Oops, I did it again. It's like I'm unable to mention Hawthorn without also mentioning Essendon's shameful recent history in the same paragraph. I promise to seek help for this compulsion, no need for further intervention, but I do appreciate that your thoughts are with me.

Is Day the first 1st tound pick selected by Hawthorn since the now discredited Ryan Burton?
Technically AFL superstar Kieran Lovell was taken a few picks later in the same Draft but was still a first round selection.

Debuting pick 13 tomorrow night. Is that a bit elite-end-ish.

I love that this post will lead to five hundred more posts in the vain of "I think elite means pick 1-5" "nah its the first round" "aw what" etc...

Will Day - Elite End ?????
Didn't even make finals last year and still can't get into the elite end of the draft

Closer perhaps, but he could have another 10 years. Malthouse, Yabbie, Kennedy, Sheedy all went to around 59-61. Clarko looks after himself, and could easily beat those guys for longevity by a number of years, placing him only a little past the half way mark as a senior coach right now. I wonder who the oldest AFL/VFL coach was? Nobody I looked up had got beyond 61, but didn't look very far afield.
So Clarkson is only 52 years old. Who's to say he can coach the hawks as a 60-62 year old? I can see it happen.

Do you want to be the Cats? 4-9 in finals since the 2011 flag. 0-4 in prelims and a straight sets in there. Great H&A record but can't seem to get it done in finals for whatever reason. Some pretty good names in that list still to replace.

Other than trading for Danger (gun), Henderson and Tuohy they've largely stuck to the draft. Haven't had any early picks (10 the best, Cockatoo who would be good if he ever played) and historically they burn their first rounders and draft well from 20 onward.
Had they won those prelims in 2013 and 2016, they would of won both grand finals especially 2016 vs the dogs

Elite end is top 5 its really a crap shoot after that. If we'd got our hands on a top 5 pick i reckon we would have used it.
