Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Yeah, and according to Hawthorn fans he was the second coming of Gary Ayres. It goes both ways, oppo fans underrate and bag other players, their fans wrap them up then underrate them when they leave.
Mate this again. His best year was still his 2nd in the AFL, he is struggling to stay on the park as well.

if he was at Hawtjorn still no one would rate him anywhere near as highly.

I doubt that. To suggest Scrimshaw has more upside is simply biased. Scrimshaw hasn't shown half of what Burton has.

I doubt I'm in the minority here but IMHO Clarkson has held on to senior players (particularly some that have done sweet FA in the past two years) for far too long. The core of the team that won the VFL premiership at Box Hill two years ago are still on the list but he persists with playing senior players who are seriously out of form and unlikely to find it again. I was happy to see some new blood in the past couple of weeks but when it's Keegan Brooksby (30 years old) and Darren Minchington (delisted twice), well it's hardly refreshing the list.

Glass, Jeka, Koschitzke, Ross, Moore, Jones, Jiath - I'd rather see them getting a game than going through the motions like we're doing now. Will Day has been the highlight of the Hawks year and I'd rather we lose than win and blood new talent.

Hang on Worpel has a very good 2nd year and now is being written off because he has had a poor start to year 3.

Burton had a very good year 2, went backwards in year 3 and hasn’t improved again since in year 4 and 5.

I like Burton he is a fine player with neat skills. He may still improve in to the player I hope he will be but 3 years of stagnation doesn’t suggest that is happening soon.

100%!!! Our 3 games before today were absolutely pathetic...

what does Clarkson do this week...

out: Henderson (injured) and O’Brien (injures) in: a delisted spud from the Suns in Brooksby and scrimshaw ...Just pathetic and weak.

Next week will probably be out: minchington in: puopolo

You won a premiership five years ago. How long are you going to dine our on that? We are analyzing Hawthorn's list management since to the point where the list is cooked

Pick 3 (could be pick 2 by the end of next week) and pick 19 might change some of that. The Hawks list lacks talented players under the age of 21. That is obvious. Who’s to say Hawthorn wouldn’t be able to rebound if they draft well over the next two years?

Here's the thing. We don't know that for sure. Our under 21s were good enough to win the VFL flag a couple of years ago. I think we do struggle for a key forward at the moment (hence why Clarkson and co went after Patton) to be sure. That being said, I can't believe we've persisted with Tom Scully when say Conor Glass couldn't do any worse. At least try something new.

What’s the under 21’s competition?

Need to go to the draft yes

Hawthorn fans were right to rate him highly when he had a breakout season in his first full year in the system (second year after being drafted injured). The problem is, that was his best season, so there is less reason to be excited after 5 years in the system and not having returned to the form from that great 2017. A good player, with some scope for further improvement. However, not likely to be the star he looked like he could become when he was (unluckily IMO) second in the rising star.

Symbolic game v Carlton next week

Have to disagree..Carlton are a 4-5 goal better side than us currently.

They are playing a great brand of footy. They have a great mix of young and old. It’s the first time in close to a decade they have depth as well.

We are lucky Charlie curnow is out injured and mcckay is in doubt, might give us a small chance to win but can’t see it happening.

Cripps will have 30+. If McKay doesn’t play, Betts and casboult will kick 6 between them. Bookmark this.

There is a smell about Hawthorn that’s really on the nose.

The symbolism is one club going south while the other going the other way

Givem hawks amazing winning record v Carlton, if blues prevail will pretty much put the full stop on the hawks era

Brendon Bolton actually coached us to a win against The Hawks in the final round of 2018.

Good times.
