Obviously North cut deeper, however you can’t say that the Hawks are that far behind. I think it’s a fair comparison.

Good call, hawthorn smarter, cashing in on older guns at the end of their careers is smarter.. Still , like north , in for some down years, but as usual, they always bounce back.

They were some really important players to Hawthorn in 2022 though. Mitchell and O'Meara are some of your most important mids. I know Sydney would go worse if we traded out Parker and Warner.

It’s taken most of them 5 years to realise how horrific our list is and how much Clarko and wright destroyed the list in their final years but at least they now realise how long the journey ahead will be.
End of next year will be 8 years since a finals win. It will be 10+ before our next. We have no choice but to be patient. At least we know we have the right man at the helm who is doing what should have been done 4-5 years ago.

No they aren't lol.
They were two symptoms of a slow dysfunctional midfield.
Our midfield has a long way to go but we are building in the right direction with Newcombe, Ward and Moore. Power, skill and intelligence.
But those guys need protection while they build into the players they are going to be. Ask Gold Coast how their young talented midfielders went when they had no protection of bigger bodied older mids around them. Mitchell and O'Meara, while definitely having flaws did take the focus of the opposition away from your younger guys.
Now Newcombe and Worpel are going to be your main midfielders. Are they ready for that?

Yep. Both can handle themselves on the field.
Yes, as the 3rd and 4th mids.
Also I am not sure about Newcombe but from memory Worpel is very taggable. Tag him and he basically disappears in terms of impact. I could be mis-remembering though.

Worpel played as the #1 mid in 2019 and won a B&F.
Newcombe was copping the most attention from post-bye from the oppo. He's been our #1 mid for half the year. Still came 2nd in the B&F by a bees dick to Sicily who should have been AA.
They will be fine. Both big tough boys.

Worpel - 23 years, 8 months
Moore - 23 years, 2 months
Newcombe - 21 years, 2 months
Ward - 19 years, 1 month
I have probably missed people but that is such a young midfield. It is asking a lot of them. Most lists that have midfields that young are in the bottom 4.

We are going in to the season next year with only 6 players over the age of 25 IIRC.
We are young across the board. I don't think results are really all that important for us for the next 2 seasons. Mitchell has said as much when he first became coach.

The players will be fine, but a midfield with Newcombe and Worpel as their 1st and 2nd best midfielders is going to struggle - no doubt about it.
Worpel hasn’t really kicked on and is a pretty limited player overall.
Newcombe is a gun, but he’s still really young and his output will fluctuate.
Can’t recall the last time a Hawthorn side was so poor in the midfield - if ever.
I know there’s some early coping happening but geez, I’d be concerned for the next couple of years.

I know you disagree but I personally think that is a bad call as most teams that go super young don't succeed. Even Ross Ryon said "you need older Elephants to teach the younger Elephants how to be Elephants"
You need the older guys to guide the younger ones. Not having that is why teams like Gold Coast, Carlton and Melbourne failed time and time again. It is why North Melbourne are down the bottom now as they cut their older players all at once and left only the young guys with no one to guide them.

Can see why Mitchell was trying to get at least one traded out last year, to take a more staggered approach to rebuilding the list and maybe get a reasonable pick for one of their better players.
Mitchell (Tom) was likely still worth Pick 15-20 at the end of last year, now he’s been virtually given away.

Sam has spoken time and time again of our young leaders stepping up.
Lewis and Moore (both will be 24 next year starting to hit their primes) to complement the likes of Hardwick and Sicily. Breust the veteran.
We are much better placed than North.
Our 2005-2006 teams had the likes of Crawford, Vanderburg, Smith and Dixon. The young fellas drove the team fine. Mitchell probably trying to replicate a young team growing together as he experienced himself.
So other than Bruest will hawks have any player over 30 next year? They will be very raw.

I am sure Melbourne thought Trengrove and Grimes were going to be good young leaders too.
Bruest is near the end of his career, and traditionally small forwards are not really leaders, or they aren't much, and Sicily, I have not followed him closely recently but is he a leader? I always took him as someone the leadership group needed to reign in rather than a leader himself.

Strangely enough Worps played his best footy while being tagged in 2019.
Hasn’t been tagged since but his output has decreased, then fallen off a cliff this year.
It’s a huge year, next year, both for him personally but also our fortunes will rely on him lifting.
