And copped a fair bit of flak from fellow Hawks supporters at the time too
Yeah, the real fun of the thread was the defensive delusions when they sold the farm for O'Meara it was all good...That was over 5 years ago now.
The names of those posters that were so defensive back then seem to be all quiet as reality sets in, how silly they were but were convinced every post would be a winner back then. The Hawks fans speaking now seem to be the more sensible ones and dealing with reality.

I never said he wasn’t a good player. He will take at least 18 months to get anywhere near the level he was when he won the Brownlow medal.
There’s a good chance he never gets back to that level.
However, he can’t kick and doesn’t kick goals and he’s our number 1 midfielder. That there is a huge issue. He would be just about every other teams number 3 or 4 midfielder.
O'meara has been a disaster...there is no other way to look at it...he would be worth a late second round pick at best if he was traded tomorrow. Look what we paid for him. He’s a average to decent player that plays one excellent game every 4-5 games. That’s 5 excellent games a season. He should be our clear number 1 mid and he isn’t even close.

Our midfield is bottom 3 in the AFL so not great, but that’s not Sam’s fault.
He can only coach what he has...he has a “pure” midfield unit of Tom Mitchell, James Worpel, jaeger O'meara and Liam Shiels...not one of those players can kick, not one of them can break the lines and not one of them kicks goals.
Wait until he becomes senior coach when Clarko finishes...he’s in for a world of pain.

It’s not hate...Clarko is a legend and will be go down as one of if not the greatest coaches ever...sometimes even the great ones get things wrong...he needs to admit it...everyone can see it, even stevie wonder can..
it’s also the sheer arrogance of our supporters living off our 3 flags in a row that still can’t see or admit that our list is absolutely cooked.

Clarkson, (who’s just been paid a million dollars to sit on the couch for a year) and hawthorns failure to read the room is now being brutally exposed.
The hawks, for the next few years, can expect a constant grilling from a media who’s only concern is “wins and losses”
The test, as the defeats continue to mount, will be in the clubs ongoing support of Mitchell.

They employed the only strategy a middle tier club can employ when it can't attract A grade free agents, bottoming out.
Problem is, they have to actually nail their draft picks, and keep them.
Easier said than done.
They are at rock bottom, but rock bottom could last 3 years, maybe more of being completely uncompetitive
Issue is that the fans will disappear as will sponsors, will the coach last? Who knows.
I predict it will probably take 10 years at least for them to win a final from their last winning final.
Buckle up, its going to be a long slow process.

Geelong proved it was possible to do it, Hawthorn just didn't do a good job of it. Overpaid for trading players in and not being able to attract quality FA's were the final nails

6 years delaying?
We have used our 1st round picks in 2019, 2020, and 2021. This will be our 4th year in a row we have used our 1st round draft pick.

I predict BF predictions will continue to be wrong 90% of the time.
If they get some good mids in and supplement that with 1-2 FAs it can turn in 4-5 years

Exactly. 10 years is basically 2 entire flag runs.
We have turned over 20 players in 2 years. Yet not lost a lot of our top talent.

What happened to the three years prior?
Hawthorn would have used those picks on picks on players but no reasonable player wanted to play for them due to their downward spiral.
Every club is gifted a first round pick each year, the Hawks needed to push harder to bring in more.

we have a bottom 3 midfield and forward line, neither which will get better over the next few seasons.
We also have no replacement for James Frawley who has been a wonderful player for us but he’s just about cooked....
How do you think we will get better when we have no elite midfielders, no key forwards and no key defenders?
the worst thing about our current team is the lack of leadership!! Ben Stratton is our captain...just say that 5 times and let it sink in
Because our key forward stocks are the worst in the AFL. We chased Tom Lynch and missed out. You can see why...
Patton was available and came cheap in terms of a trade. Clarko and Wright have always backed themselves with players from other clubs and those type of trades....unfortunately in the last 5 seasons the majority of the players they have bought in other than Tom Mitchell have been bad decisions.
The footy department have clearly overrated our list in recent seasons and unfortunately it’s going to cost us over the next 3-5 years.

Patton isn’t making us better. We have midfielders that can’t kick...he needs silver service. Once the ball hits the deck, he’s irrelevant.
We needed Mitch Lewis to really come on this season. I’m not excusing his performance today which was arguably the worst game anyone has played this season, but he’s had a few injuries this season and has had no continuity. Second half of last season he showed great potential.
Tim O’Brien is the other one that’s just killed us. He’s 26 and just hasn’t become the player Clarko would have hoped.
Missing out on Tom Lynch was an absolute killer for us.

The 3 years prior were the 3 years we were still trying to win.
Not 6.
I mean its terrible that Clarko won 3 in a row then tried for a 4th.
We should have ditched everyone 28 and over and started the rebuild in 2016.

If that is true we should have traded Sicily now. And told Wingard to look elsewhere too.

2018 we finish top 4 but lose 2 finals. We bring in Wingard to try and push up further. Costly but at that stage most supporters thought we weren't that far away. Got Scully cheap
Mitchell breaks his leg in January so 2019 become a write off and ends any chance of topping up to win a premiership
We won the 2015 flag with at the time the oldest premiership side in history.
You go for it in 2016 obviously but after the way we ended that season it was clear that era was over.
Aging stars had either retired or declined and there was very little coming through to push us back up.
Clarko was delusional thinking he could win a flag with that list.

Finishing Top 4 is fools gold sometimes.
Wingard is the type of player you bring in when you’re already going deep in September - not being knocked out in straight sets in your past couple of finals campaigns.
Scully was always a bit of hit and hope.
Mitchell going down definitely set you backwards, but his absence was only one of a number of factors why the Hawks went down in 2019.
