Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

Not making finals and getting early draft picks.
Clarko too good a coach to have the hawks bottom 4.
Well it's looking like we will miss finals for the second time during this period so.....

Most of your premiership core were early draft picks.
Hodge
Franklin
Roughy
Lewis
Cyril and Birchall should be on that list.

Gibson, Lake, Hale all pretty important too, a Norm Smith and two Premiership B&F winners in that group and they were all trades.
2013 Prelim also had a decent effort from another trade Shaun Burgoyne.
Jack Gunston kicked the most goals in Grand finals out of our players, another trade

We had a good mix and the core of our threepeat team wasn't just our draft picks from our 2008 flag

I fear for the future of this thread if Coniglio joins Hawthorn in October.

Absolute fair point. Who do you think were your top 4 most important players in those 3 peat years.

Fair to say most Hawks fans on here rate their under 23 list and feel they don't need to bottom out rather add the right players through trade and some creative drafting win another flag.
Will be a very interesting few years for you guys.
Good luck

Hawks will make a prelim within the next 3 years. Have some very decent players coming thru, as always they have plenty of vfl under their belt. Still have to let go a couple but will get it correct. Still don’t like them.

It's hard to compare HFC to other clubs who have been in similar positions and assume there is a long rebuild ahead.

Hawthorn draft or recruit players, whether high pick or low and develop them at a much faster rate and turn them into premiership contributors. Look at , Guerra, Bruest, Poppy, Stratts and the like who nobody rated that much..Even Whitecross before he did his knees. He didn't look much at Box Hill in the early part of his career but was an absolute killer in 2011. HFC will top up on ready made A graders, as they have done with Chad (yep, he's a star), Mitch, Jaegar and soon to be Coniglio, along with the whole previous wave that played their roles in premiership success. They've uncorked future A graders in Sicily, Hardwick(already are) & Lewis. Personnel wont be an issue for this club. Then you've got the quality organisation that people want to be a part of (HFC dominate free agency). How often do quality HFC players ask to leave the club? I haven't even mentioned that there is the game's greatest coach. Be very surprised as early as next season if we are not back in the top 4 and challenging again.

Contra poinion is we will stay at the bottom of the ladder then get picks anyway

What hawks will not do is deliberately bottom out whatever that is (I assumed it was a largely discredited approach anyway)

But are you using your experiences as a Carlton supporter to predict the future of Hawthorn?

Depends how you define it and which year.
We don't win those flags without Lake in defence to take the big jobs but Gibbo was the cornerstone of that defence, he won two B&F for a reason.
Birchall seriously underated.
Lewis put the team on his shoulders in 2014 when we had injuries.
Burgoyne and Hale had massive moments to beat Geelong in the prelim in 2013, the moment that set it up.
Hodge was the Captain and won a Norm Smith.

Mitchell got us the wins in the regular season, set up so much of our attacks.

The reality is it takes more than four blokes we had champions from the draft and from trades in that team, high picks and low, rookies and retreads.

It doesn't matter how you get them just that you get them.

Forgot about Gib .... came across from the Roos as a bit of an afterthought only to win 3 flags and 2 x B&F's

He wasn't an afterthought. Clarko saw how he played Buddy, saw the competitor in him.

Hodge was a trade.
Franklin yes - he was pick 2 - but he left for nothing.
Roughy yes
Lewis was also a pick upgrade from trades

Mitchell was pick 32
Cyril was pick 12
Burgoyne was a trade
Gibson a trade
Lake a trade
Gunston a trade
McEvoy a trade

There is no doubt Hawthorn nailed two drafts - 01 and 04 - but they only bottomed out for the 04 draft. Hawks made a prelim in 01.

Everything else was trading or speculative picks.

Hodge was pick 1 you drafted him after you traded for pick 1

I agree 100% Lake was critical. Three peat does not happen without him.

It takes all of them though. And it takes a shitload of luck to accumulate that much talent.

Of course. But Hawthorn lost to Goldspink in a prelim final that year. They did not bottom out.
Hawthorn were pretty average during most of the 90s and early 2000s took the draft and early picks (however it was acquired) to build your core and team and good trading to get that 3 peat.
