Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

Apart from clarko usually sticking to his word, dont you think he would see carlton as a bit if a rabble? A coach killer?

He might see them as a mound of clay, ready to be sculpted in his own image.

The list is ready to go forward, but the new coach needs to be wary of the back room.

Haven’t got a clue if Clarkson is keen or not but even if he is, at this point of the season what else could he say other than what he has.
Who knows what he see’s, perhaps a loaded young list about to cut loose. I do know one thing though, nothing lasts forever, as hawthorn are now discovering ...

They need to wake up to themselves. Do they have that capacity? An coach of clarkos seniority would be mad to go there without a list of changes they need to take on board

This kind of sounds like pagans story at carlton from the other night. Anyway clarkos mates bolton and ratten may have some advice

So the only role GWS have to play is to enable players to get to the club of their choice. Only a Victorian!p
not at all

they should be trying to convince as many players as possible to stay at GWS by being a great club

But an important thing is that players stay by choice not that they are forced to

Hawthorn has fielded 7 of 2019's oldest 11 teams, for six defeats and a 7-point win over Freo.

It's obvious to all but the most stubborn Hawk fans that major change is needed.
Hi Ron

Are you saying that what Hawthorn is doing is wrong and it's impossible for Hawthorn to win a flag in 2019-2022?

Oh and what are your thoughts on being old and losing games?
Still not concerned in the slightest. Most of our younger players were our better ones tonight. After quarter time North controlled the middle - as they should’ve from the start. We’ll have Mitchell back next year and we’ll have addressed our midfield depth issue in the off season. Every loss from here only makes addressing that issue easier with the better draft picks we’ll hold.

Not impossible. Carlton renovated an old team post-1984 to win in 1987. Pre-salary cap days of course.

Obviously Clarko deserves tremendous respect, but he's not a magician. Box Hill is only mid-table in the VFL so I take it there are no unseen superstars in waiting.

Just reckon there are plenty of more appealing destinations than Hawthorn ATM. But if they can attract the substantial quality they need then good luck to them. It would be a victory for marketing over substance IMO.

I see the Hawks as being in a similar position to Adelaide. The major difference is the coach's reputation, and the respect accorded to multi-premiership players, e.g. speculation surrounds Betts while Puopolo boots three goals in 14 games. The Hawks have been given a cosy run by the media, and perhaps they deserve it.

Just checking

The stats you were showing seem to show you think Hawthorn can't win the flag in 2019-2022

Not saying we will win one, but I think we'll find ourselves in contention in the not so distant future

IMO they can't win a flag in the short term, where "can't" means "it's highly improbable". Happy for my opinion to be bumped in future if appropriate. I'll eat my words if proven wrong.

NB I didn't see West Coast's last flag coming.

Poppy gets questioned every week by the media whenever we play, but Betts gets more attention during the week because of his popularity and elite status.

The media have been pronouncing the death of the Hawks for most of the year, i would have thought, declaring us to be in serious trouble. We have been winning over the last month and so that has been on pause.

Haven't been paying close attention, but haven't heard anyone in the media saying Hawthorn's in serious trouble. They've had enough good wins to keep the media from going off the deep end - Adelaide, GWS, Collingwood, Geelong - but they haven't been able to bring the required effort consistently. People are reluctant to put a line through champions, and rightly so, but I think the 2019 Hawks are distant enough from that tag to warrant it.

Last year there were murmurings before a favourable run of games saw them reel off six on the trot; this year they look like recording their fewest wins in a decade. The trend is downward.

You mean you hope that you will have.

Mitchell post broken leg may take a while to get going.

Plus there are a lot more holes than just the midfield.

All of the footy shows have had multiple discussions on how Hawthorn are going off the deep end. They put up a list of our players under 21 and make the usual predictions of gloom.

Footy Classified almost apologised 2 weeks ago after we beat Geelong. They have become a sad show.

Has been back to running and full strength training since the start of June. He'll hit pre season 100%

Ah well I don't really watch any of them apart from FC, sometimes. They're caught up in the rollercoaster news cycle. Mick McGuane said Richmond was a contender at the end of May; a month later he was saying they would miss the finals; another month on and he's back aboard. And he's a smarter man than me.

I posted some similar figures on Hawthorn's decline right at the point last year where the run of six began (while conceding it was possible Hawthorn could still reach the top four, and I hoped they did!). Had them pegged for 13th at the start of the year and that's more or less how it's played out. And that's with Henderson having a career-best year at 31, and Impey becoming a better player than I thought he could be.

If Hawthorn was to secure half a dozen moderates like Impey and get similar improvement from them, they could play finals.

Hendo and impey have picked up the slack from Gunston and Bruest (and Mitchell) who have had far worse season than i thought.

It hurts a bit seeing Richmond's depth. And nobody wants to leave.

Another wicket! C'mon!
