How many of you guys think that you can hold on to all your players out of contract at the end of this season? You guys have some big names out of contract including Ablett, Bartell, Ottens, Chapman, Scarlett, and many more. Do you guys think there is a possible way of keeping all of the big names that will be out of contract because the way i see it; there will have to be BIG salary cuts for them to all fit under the salary cap.

Thoughts?

i think you'll find that money isn't the be all end all for the boys....similar to the lions when they dominated a few years back, who turned down some big $$ from other clubs to stick together. money doesn't necessarily bring happiness.......premierships and success with your mates who you've worked hard with does....i reckon this group will want to stick together and see how far they can take it.

I think you'll have a harder time keeping your list together in future years. Geelong has team spirit - something Carlton has not had for many decades. Seeing the treatment your club throws at youngsters like Kennedy who actually wanted to stay at the club, I can't see all your high draft picks playing for draft picks whilst Judd takes up approximately 1/7th of the cap.

I'm always amused at this line of argument since Brad's asking price was cut heavily once the club learned of some residual injuries during his medical before he came across. It may be hard for some Melbournites who like their beaches waveless to realise but there are very good reasons for coming to Geelong, not least of which was clearly an up-and-coming list, the justification of which was obviously 2007 (and hopefully beyond).

As an aside, if you are after some amusement, try yellowandblack or puntroadend for some Brad-directed vitriol in their archived forums. Here's one to get you started -

A guy like Ablett gets more from Nike than he does from Geelong at the moment. While they don't all have the sponsorship appeal of Ablett, money is not a problem for most who have been around the club for 5-6 years, and the young guys might have to take less than what they might otherwise get, but would be foolish to leave.

people seem to keep saying 'big pay cuts' in relation to our squad, which I dont think is accurate. Some of the higher paid boys might be asked to take a bit less so they can give guys like selwood something closer to market value, but its more about not accepting bigger offers than it is about taking pay cuts I reckon.

no point in you having a dig at my team mate, i was asking a serious question...

Yeah, you were, until you had a pot shot at Ottens. BigBadCam was just returning serve.

I wouldn't mind betting that Ottens is one of the ones to take a decent pay cut as from all report he loves it down at Geelong.

I think it is a bit naive to think we will hold on to everyone. I can't see it happening we are simply too talented.

Scarlett, who I'd imagine is still our highest paid player goes onto the old farts list next year so in effect there is a pretty handy reduction already. Ottens has re-signed and Kelly & Harley have both come out in the press and openly stated that the players want to stay together and create an era a la Brissy Lions.

Endorsements for blokes like Gaz & Jimmy would certainly add to their overall pay packet and even young Joel Selwood is getting his face in a fair few ads as well so the club will no doubt continue to push for players to make these dollars outside the salary cap.

In the end it will come down to temptation and risk. There may be a couple who test the waters elsewhere but if you've been getting $350K p.a. for the last 3 years is an extra $100K a year playing for the reigning wooden spooners going to do it for you.

Success is a wonderful thing and believe me, Geelong players and supporters know that premiership opportunities don't come around too often so while you're on a good thing, stick to it.

A big thing I picked up from 'the Mission' was that the guys were fed up with being a 'mediocre' team. Can't see many of them now accepting mediocrity and heading off to an average/crap team who can pay them buckets of cash.

Some will leave, but probably not many, and not key players. Good players tend to want to stay at good teams. Nobody wants to win the B&F at the team that wins a wooden spoon. Look at Brisbane in its top years.

And for every extra dollar you earn on the field you're closing a bunch of doors off the field for the rest of your life. If you're a two or three time premiership player you're value as a commentator or coach goes up a heap. Again winning the B&F at the wooden spooners isn't likely to open too many coaching or commentating doors. Hell even Martin Pike has a regular radio gig and he can barely string two words together.

Ottens, Corey, Stevie J, Milburn, Wojak & Ling have all signed new deals according to Hutchy in todays Hun with the Tomahawk to sign up in the very near future.

Perhaps Wojak's mid week meeting was in regards to a new cleaner!!

Maybe we can get a few pointers from your club how you kept your team under the salary cup in 1995 and cheat your way to a premiership??

Yep. I think that it would be a good bet that Nathan Ablett will not be on the Cats list next year.

Awesome news

Seriously. How many players have left a premiership club for cash in recent years? Judd and no-one. I think Geelong has deliberately drafted from places worse than Geelong to limit homesickness. ie. country areas and adelaide. No-one seems to get homesick for Adelaide. :p
