I was in a local Essendon pub yesterday having a few beverages when half of the Essendon football team came in. Most of the players has a couple of beers and some werent drinking at all but I was shocked when I went outside for a cigarette and there was a player out back smoking! Now I dont want to name names and I suppose a couple of cigarettes in the off season is OK but the player concerned is certainly no Paul Vanderhar and I just wonder if he may be better off focusing on his footy and fitness rather than smoking.....They are elite level athletes and I know some players drink to much or even take drugs but smoking in this day and age would seem a little taboo for an AFL footballer. Thoughts - comments?

What they do on break is their business really - they just need to make sure they show up for training in good nick. If any of them showed up with skin folds up, or unable to run due to the smoking they'd cop a whack for it.

You'd be surprised at how many players actually indulge in a few darts in the off-season.

Re: Can players do that?

Hearing stuff like this annoys because we are all hoping that our player are putting 100% into their pre season to give us the best chance of success next year, but instead they are drinking and smoking(one person) on a wednesday night I know players are allowed to do this but as a professional athlete you would think they'd be wanting to stay fit for the upcoming season

Re: Can players do that?

$5 says it was Reimers smoking.

but seriously, as said before, as long as they stay out of trouble, out of the media and return to preseason training in respectable fashion and fitness then we should let them have their time off.

Studies have actually show that a few indulgences now and then will not contribute poorly to physical health, and can actually significantly improve mental health.... but then this report was probably conducted by a a bunch of out of work scientists desperate to justify their existence.

Re: Can players do that?

They're elite athletes, if the take themselves seriously they shouldn't be smoking.

Re: Can players do that?

Fletcher could look like a smoke if you set his hair on fire.

As long as they don't do it during the Home and Away season, I don't really care.

Re: Can players do that?

There grown men.

They should make the right decision. A little in moderation is fine.

If they were to act like some people in Navy Blue, that's when there is an issue.

Re: Can players do that?

This was an issue on this board with Stanton last off season. I argued then and I maintain; they're supposed to be professionals in their trade as elite sports people and should focus on perfecting their craft.
For these guys it includes their health and the public image of the club.
This is why the club pays them as much as they do.
The club should expect that players meet health maintenance demands in return. It seems a no-brainer to me that in a professional sporting team in the 21st century a zero tolerance policy regardinig things like smoking and drinking, especially in the public sphere, should be in place.

Re: Can players do that?

FFS! Let them do what they want to do in the off season. I dont care if they go on a 2 week bender as long as they show up for training when the season gets closer.

Re: Can players do that?

Went to Highpoint's cinemas two days ago, randomly saw Skipworth, C.Bock & Waite.

Skipworth & Bock were hanging out together but Waite was with his sort of 'average' looking girl.

Big Setanta O'Hellpin I noticed walking around Westfield today also. The footballers are out in force!

How drunk were Waite and Setanta?

How drunk were Waite and Setanta?

They were absolutely pissed by the look of 'em.

Time to dig in now Carlton fans. Get stuck into 'em, you're all perfect!

Re: Can players do that?

Smoking is the least of the problems within the AFL subculture.

I've got no doubt that in the next couple of years a shitstorm is going to hit the AFL in the same way that it has in the NRL. There is no way we are immune to it.

We idolise the players as footballers but the fact is that the majority are drop kicks as blokes. Especially the younger Generation Y's.

perhaps there is a link between smoking and having a defensive side to your game...can't do both!
