Can we expect to see any leadership challenges in Australian politics (whether it’s state or federal) in 2021?

Discuss.

Albo out for Jim Chalmers at some stage.
The Federal Leader of the opposition straight after a Federal election has traditionally been a placeholder in Australia. Chalmers is the next cab off the Labor rank at Federal level.

Dan Andrews must go.

His 2020 performance cost 800 lives and set Victoria back decades. To add insult to injury, he was rewarded with an 11% payrise. Nuff said.

Keep an eye on Jenny Mikakos from the back bench. Won’t get anywhere though.

Vic Libs will rearrange the deck chairs on the titanic, but they are all hopeless.

Agree with Mofra on Albo, but Jim Chalmers is pretty meh.

Lets face it, they are all s**t.

Andrews isn't going anywhere unless he chooses to.

Albo might be in some trouble but Morrison isn't that far ahead so Albo might hang on to the leadership.

I wouldn't be surprised if Glady hung up the boots after such a difficult year because she looks drained by it all.

Mikakos aligning with the branch stacking slimeball who is expelled from the party means she's dead in the water before she starts

The Macklin/Bracks review is done, and members have already been told:

1) they have been booted if they did not verify their membership and confirm they are an active alp member of their branch in question (everyone was contacted directly and effectively had to confirm their intention to remain with their branch)

2) members have to pay all fees electronically now, and payments must be from an account name matching their registration name. Cash payments are prohibited.

3) the process for signing new members has been changed to guarantee that the application is submitted directly by the individual applying.

He has also been deregistered from the party. The only way he comes back is if he's backers can sway the votes internally, and the above has gutted his powerbase imo

Mikakos future imo is as an independent, so I expect her to try and align herself as a working peeps Fiona Patten. I doubt she has the track record to have the greens accept her in

Out of the premiers/chief ministers (not counting the prime minister) and opposition leaders in each of the 6 states (Vic, SA, WA, NSW, Tasmania Queensland) and two territories (ACT, NT), which ones are safe and who is in the ‘danger zone’ (ie facing a leadership challenge) in 2021?

NSW Opposition Leader Jodi McKay and VIC Opposition Leader Michael O'Brian are probably first on the chopping block. Both have been woefully ineffective at getting any electoral traction despite their states' Premiers handing them plenty of ammunition.

Hard to see Berejiklian going anywhere, and although everyone seems to think Dan Andrews will go I am more optimistic. He's still popular and I reckon he sticks around for at least 12 months.

WA, NT, ACT and QLD shouldn't see any internal challenges - they have very popular premiers, and new opposition leaders. But WA has an election in March and it looks like their opposition leader will lose his seat, so the Liberals will probably have a new leader forced on them.

Not sure about SA or Tasmania.

Write down Jacinta Allen as a possible successor to Daniel Andrews when Andrews announces his retirement from state politics. Jill Hennessy might be the obvious choice to replace Andrews, but Allen has shown she can handle the spotlight and has done the Coronavirus numbers updates very well.

Fact she is front facing with Merlino on leave is a pretty big tell to succession planning

Also the fact that neither Andrews nor Merlino has fronted up to any Coronavirus updates since the latest outbreak and Allen is doing the job most capably at this stage gives you an idea of who's next in line to replace Andrews-and it's not Merlino, Hennessy, or Paluka.

They are both on leave

Andrews on leave isn't the story, it's Merlino at the same time

That is extraordinary, seeing not only Premier Daniel Andrews but also his deputy James are on leave, yet Jacinta Allen is doing a far better job of handling the Coronavirus numbers updates than many people expected. If Victoria gets through this outbreak period without any major dramas or problems, then Allen’s chances of getting the leadership once Andrews goes will be very good. The interesting question is, if Allen does get the job as Labor leader and possibly Premier, would she bring Jane Garrett out of the political wilderness and into a major portfolio (ie Attorney General, Health Minister)?

Who cares. Garrett is a nothing option either way

The only issue the next leader will face is being the face of the rebuild and not the virus. Everything else is irrelevant

My guess is while Daniel Andrews will definitely contest the 2022 state election, he’ll anoint Jacinta Allen as his successor around 2023-24, thereby bypassing other candidates like James Merlino and Jill Hennessy. In fact, we could expect to see Allen and Hennessy as Premier and Deputy Premier respectively, with Merlino becoming Treasurer in time for the 2026 election.

I think we are stuck with Morriscum for awhile . I don’t think Albo will last much longer as labor leader . The sharks are definitely circling

I reckon whoever replaces Anthony Albenese as leader (ie Bill Shorten or Tanya Pilbersek) really only keeping the seat warm for the person the federal Labor team had in mind to take on PM Scott Morrison-Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

lol would never happen, even if he hadn't already explicitly ruled out ever moving to federal politics

Had high hopes for Albo but he's lost his fire. Under the Rudd rules changing leaders is no simple task though.

Was disappointed Chalmers didn't test the waters last time

Jacinta won't get the job after Dan has won the next two State elections. Her handling of the top job during Dan's recent leave damaged her chances.

Mark McGowan should go against Morrison

Anthony Albanese will move Mark Butler from the contentious climate change and energy portfolios in a shadow cabinet reshuffle aimed at soothing internal division destabilising his leadership.
Senior sources have told The Australian that Mr Butler, the architect of Labor’s uncosted 45 per cent emissions reduction target at the last election, will leave the portfolio he has held since 2013 as the ALP moves to repair the divisions between its industrial and environmental wings.

Speculation was growing within the federal Labor caucus on Wednesday night that the climate and energy role would be given to Chris Bowen, from the NSW right. Mr Bowen is currently health spokesman.

The shadow cabinet reshuffle, to be announced on the weekend, comes as pressure grows on Mr Albanese’s leadership with his predecessor Bill Shorten at the weekend describing Labor’s policy agenda as “tiny” but maintaining support for the Opposition Leader.

Good. Read the room. You must be shocked labor is watering down there climate policies when you guys shouted but but majority agree. Well well well look at the actions of albo

Put Joel fitzgibbons in as climate portfolio and I might vote labor
