Captain Johncock

you know what I interesting about VB as captain, is that many people talk about his leadership, his intangibles etc.

I disagree, I think he's more than good enough in his own right - when he's fit and firing.

He played his best game for the year, and was instrumental against Richmond - it wasn't his intangibles, it was his output we needed.

We don't need to make excuses for him, his best is plenty good enough.

Yeah, i agree entirely.

I dont see the leadership/intangibles as excuses though. Its more the icing on the cake.

Certainly, as a player hes good enough in his own right when hes settled. People have short memories, because we havent seen him near best any time recently, but this is the same guy whos had multiple single digit finishes in best and fairest etc...

Everyone loves VB, it would be good to have him as captain because opposition players would be unable to prevent themselves from having homosexual thoughts about him and would thus be distracted from the game.

I can't see any reason why a fit VB wouldn't make our best 22 for the remainder of his career either.

Well, it might be good if he stops being a clanger king. He can play some good football, and has . But if Walker made the same blues VB often does we'd never see him again.

Just on Johncock, I would love to have seen him given an occasional run in the middle. It is always said that he has not got the engine. But surely his hard, aggressive , body at the center clearances would be a good thing.

That is true. Its also not the particular claim you made.

You said always, which implies a pattern where there isnt one.
Semantics police! He's been injured during 2009 and 2010 - the two years most relevant when deciding whether he should lead us in 2011.

Moran was very durable from U/8s to U/14s but I'd still regard him as injury prone.

Lets keep in mind that stiffy was dropped from the side not that long ago because of his poor preparation habbits.

While he's got strong "lead by example" qualities on the field being captain is more than a 2 hour a week job...

I thought his Off field troubles exculeded him from the Captaincy just like Thommo

Don't know if I agree with this at all. VB makes some clangers, but most of the time his kicking is fine and he occasionally pulls out a beautiful low raking kick to advantage. He's not the greatest kick but I wouldn't call him a clanger king by any stretch of the imagination.

On the other hand, while I'm a huge Walker fan, some of his clangers this year have been abominable. If we're judging careers using VB's ratio of clanger kicks as a benchmark, Walker IS in serious trouble.

Well we differ in our opinions. It's not so much VB's kicking it's his handball. I 'm pretty sure that his stats would show plenty of clangers, but it's mainly handball errors.

Another thing that VB does a lot is dive on the ball and get caught holding the ball. No one could doubt VB's courage or workrate, but IMO he makes far too many errors.

But I am in a very small minority with my thinking, going on the opinions on BF.

A couple of mates are in strong agreement though ( that's what makes them mates )

Its not semantics, is the accuracy of your claims. Has writing all your funny pieces softened your brain carl?

Played vast majority of the games in 09.

Moran didnt play football as a kid btw. ;)

Actually, i remember last year someone (i believe it was Crow-Mo) posted stats that demonstrated that his handball efficiency was actually elite. It was his disposal by foot that was lower.

As far as diving on the ball goes, i very very very much prefer him diving on the ball and trying to win it than other players who seem to avoid contested situations and simply let the opposition run away with it.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Vince in this thread so far, especially when just about every other first choice player has been mentioned. I'm not saying he'd be my first pick or anything like that but surely he'd be among the top 5 or so candidates.

Van Berlo seems the most likely, although I wouldn't be discounting Scott Thompson. I don't think his indiscretion a couple of years ago would rule him out, and is no worse than indiscretions from Bock and Johncock who have been mentioned here and also Goodwin who is obviously currect captain.

I trawled through 5 pages of this thread, not believing that Bernie could not get a mention.
Current CC, hard at it, good skills. Maybe a bit of the country lad lair, but gaining in poise and maturity.

I think he's no chance whatsoever. He's clearly not got the respect of his team mates who vote for the leadership group, so I'd think it unlikely for the club to install him as Captain. Also, I'm not sure I'm reading him correctly or not, but he seems completely disinterested this year - almost as if he wants to be somewhere else?

It's Dangerfield or Vince for mine. I was on the VB band wagon, but he just can't keep himself on the park! If he manages to do that, then I'd have him as Captain and Danger/Vince as Vice.
