Just on the back of last years less than smooth transition, and for mine, a really poor year from Mundy, should the captaincy issue be sorted first thing?

Personally, I think the captaincy call should be settled the instant all the players are back into full pre-season training, no lingering, no cliques that developed last year and have largely been wiped out.

Pick the leader and knuckle down.

Thoughts?

Does anyone remember if it's usually voted on every year?

Steve Rosich said on 6pr there would be a player vote again this year, I can't remember if that usually happens.

Also: if it's voted on again and the players don't change from last year, then it has to be Fyfe. It was so close last year they did the recall.

The second year players will get to vote too and players like Tucker will vote Fyfe. And we've lost a bunch of the older demographic that would go Mundy.

That's assuming players will vote the same way. Some might change to Mundy.

That's a big possibility, considering Fyfe essentially didn't play. You did see him in the rooms at breaks though one on one with a lot of younger players, so hopefully that shows his off his leedership.

We (I) just want him as captain so he'll have to stay. Difficult for the captain to talk to the media with him leaving a possibility. Although Judd, etc.

It will be resolved very soon, but remember that we still have players to come in from the national draft.

I reckon Mundy after a chat with the "leaders" at Freo, will happily stand down and concentrate on getting his game back to "A" grade.

Love him or hate him, Fyfe is the man.

Just do it.

Pav should have been captain last season anyway. Mundy might have regressed but ill back him in anyway. If the team votes Fyfe so be it, I am sure he would make a great captain.

But ill back Mundy in

If you do it first thing, the new players don't know who it is they are voting for, or will have time to acclimatise to the club and how things are done. So that's the guys traded, as well as the new draftees and rookies - potentially 25% of our list who are new to the Fremantle Brotherhood.

Better to do it late when people can make a more educated decision on who they want to lead the club based on their own experiences and observations.

All of our players had bad years last year - it's not isolated to Mundy, and I wouldn't think it's related to his captaincy.

What issues . The players voted and we had a captain . This year the players will vote we will either have a new captain or the same one as last year .
Either way the same people in the media will run with a story about someone being snubbed .

I think it was pretty obvious Pav stepped back so Fyfe could take it over and grow into the role. Mundy getting it threw a spanner in the works because Mundy is only 2-3 years off retirement anyway.

It should be pretty simple to work out, assuming the vote was very close to even

1) players departing - fyfe or mundy voters?
2) players arriving - probably all fyfe voters.

i'd have to think Fyfe has a decent chance of taking it out based on turn over.

I think it shouldn't be the players making these decisions in the first place. But it is what it is.

what do you think is a better model, and why?

We get some professional consultancy mob to run the entire leadership programme so they'll be the ones making the calls.
Doubt they study bigfooty much.

Leading teams just facilitate and help establish the framework - it's completely driven by the players and club

These guys are not footy representatives. They are captains. It is not a regular workplace. Leadership is from the top, and if somebody is voted in, it can be skewered into a popularity vote.

A better model in my opinion (not that I am correct), would be an honest assessment on all the players conduct thorough out the year (injury and performance pending) and basicially discussing with the people in the know ( the coaches, trainers, welfare, even participation in auskick and hospo visits, and of course the players on the list). I am pretty sure most clubs would know who would be a good or great captain.

This isnt a HSR vote. And sometimes player votes can be skewered in favoritism.

Dont get me wrong, no system is perfect. All i was saying in my original post is it is what it is, and Mundy is boss...so back him him

I'm happy for Mundy to hold on to it one more year if he is going to play majority midfield. I'll excuse him for the bad year because of injury problems and also that there weren't many that had a good year. Once Fyfe resigns he gets it.

RTB is a fan of leading teams, a player vote is probably a leading teams initiative so a player vote would have been in place since Ross arrived but it would have been a one man race the first few years.

We went from minor premiers to near the bottom of the ladder in the flick of a switch. Fyfe/Bennell/Sandilands/Johnson/Pearce getting injured contributed to that, but something seemed off all season.

Was it the new coaching structure, was it internal disharmony, was it voodoo? I don't know but losses create rumours and we had plenty of both last year.
