Carji Cam Commits
Cam Guthrie will remain a Cat until at least 2025

GEELONG is thrilled to announce that Cameron Guthrie has signed a four-year contract extension with the Club.

Guthrie’s new deal will see him remain a Cat until at least the end of 2025.

“The club has always given me their respect and I’ve tried to return that,” Guthrie told Cats Media on Tuesday.

“Negotiations went really well and were conducted really fairly and respectfully again so the whole process has been a good one.”

While Guthrie is delighted to sign a new deal, his focus is very much on the now and achieving team success.

“It has been bubbling away in the background which is how I wanted it to be with obviously all my focus has been on the first couple of finals we’ve played in and then moving onto this week is another big week for the club, so I’ve wanted to make it all about the team and push any individual aspects of my career to the background.”

Guthrie joined the Cats with the 23rd selection in the 2010 national draft and has played 204 AFL games for the Club. After starting out his career in the backline he has transformed into one of the competition’s most consistent midfielders averaging 29 disposals and five clearances per game this season. Guthrie won his first Carji Greeves Medal in 2020 and was also named in the All Australian team that season.

Nicccccce, and the Cats always announce a big fish just before a big game.

I remember being at a home and away game in geelong in 2010 might have been the last round but not 100%. Hoping the Gary was going to announce he had signed a new contract that would help motivate the team for the rest of that finals series.

Could tell he'd committed a couple weeks ago when he reverted back to pre-2020 form. Very good season last year and started well this year, but he's slowly receded back to a very familiar pattern of performances particularly in finals. Could be excused for thinking there's a comfort and complacency factor to it.

I wouldn't have minded using him as trade bait this year while he still had some value and we're looking to refresh the list.

Dad's army continues into mid 2020s
Guthrie, Dangerfield, Duncan, Hawkins, Menegola
Will we sign Smith on a 2 year deal next
I remember when Scott arrived he spoke of youngsters being preferred.
We have an astonishing team on paper, but twilight arrives
I really hope that at least Clark stays and plays all season and is convinced to stay.
I reckon Holmes and Clark could form a brilliant combination of speedsters

Trade bait? He was an unrestricted free agent. He could of just walked to the club of his choosing.

The ****?

The last month of the season he had:

29 touches, 6 marks, 4 tackles and 2 goals.
24 touches, 2 marks, 9 tackles.
36 touches, 9 marks, 3 tackles.
30 touches, 8 marks, 2 tackles.

Averaging over 4 clearances and 4 I50 in those games too.

He was bad against Port but then as good against the Giants.

If we're complaining about Cam ****ing Guthrie averaging 29 touches, 6 marks and 4 tackles this season and considering him averaging almost 30 touches in that last month, as him regressing in form, and wanting to trade him, then you're just ****ing deluded.

Really surprised by some of the negativity in here when a guy who's been in career best form the past couple of seasons commits to being a one-club player for life

In years gone past it uses to be celebrated when players were one club players, but instead we have a few that seem upset that we aren't going to be getting some undervalued draft pick in return for him exercising the free agency option

Cam has not long turned 29, so 4 years is not an unreasonable contract. Then when you consider that whatever pick we would have got for him leaving would be based on the secret AFL formular of what they deemed suitable, there's no doubt that Cam on the list for the next 4 years is the best return out if those options

He's getting enough of it, but from the eye it doesn't seem like he has been as damaging after coming back from the shoulder injury. Hasn't really seemed to be going on those line breaking runs as much. I could be wrong though. What have his metres gained numbers been like since the injury?

His form for the first half of this year was great. Carried on from last year.
Then Zac Smith busted his shoulder. I think that has shaken him up a little and who knows if he is still carrying something from it as he was definitely not the same player after it. A bit more timid.
But he still knows how to rack them up and I'll back him to get back to his absolute best.

Prior to his injury he was averaging 267 metres gained, since returning from his injury he's averaged 264.6 metres gained

He had sub 100 metres gained against the Giants in round 21 & Port in the QF, but he's also had 5 games since his return where he's had more than 300 metres gained compared with just 2 before the injury
