Sam McClure made this comparison recently.. and he has a good point. In 2016.. everyone was saying we were no good, the list had peaked, sack Hardwick and trade anyone with currency for picks! Our football department even admitted the aim was to build a list to play finals, rather than aim to build a premiership list.. because according to them, our supporters didn't have the patience to sit through the rebuild that was required.. in order to build a premiership list!
Right now.. Carlton are in a similar boat, with supporters threatening to spill the board.. and Voss under pressure similar to that of Hardwick this time in 2016. Voss and Hardwick were both ruthless, hard nosed footballers.. who know what it takes to win premierships, and have been on the receiving end of similar criticisms as coaches.. such as lack of tactical nous, and the need for better assistant coaches!
The criticisms of Carlton's list.. are remarkably similar to the ones we were receiving this time in 2016.. fantastic top end talent with the rest of the list full of plodders, and Cotchin was slammed for lacking a ruthless edge as captain. Key forwards at Carlton in Curnow and McKay.. are routinely criticised for going missing in big games, while our key forwards in Riewoldt and Vickery.. were criticised for the exact same thing! Who can forget the term 'Junk Time Jack' that was used by opposition supporters.
Carlton don't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.. they need to keep Voss and surround him with better assistant coaches, while being brave at the trade table.. and letting a big name or two go in order to free up cap space. We did this by letting go of Deledio and Vickery.. and look at how that turned out.
Carlton have Graham Wright arriving soon.. and we had Neale Balme arrive at the end of 2016. Wright and Balme both have fantastic track records of overseeing success.. and after seeing what Balme did with us, I'm confident we'll see Wright do great things at Carlton!
Do you agree that Carlton are a good chance to turn it around in 2026.. similar to how we turned it around in 2017??
