Time that they were officially recognised as such.

Yes they've been paltry since the 9/11 attacks but that doesn't erase 130 odd years of success.

A common myth is that Essendon have been as successful as Carlton throughout history.

When you look at the premiership tally throughout history of the highest level of football, you see that Carlton in fact have a more successful history than Essendon.

This is an official premiership record from 1870 when organised competition began, which includes the pre VFL days when VFA was the highest level at the time.

You can see that the VFL incorporated the history of the VFA in 1897 when the VFL breakaway league was formed.

VFA days (Up to 1896) is not included in the measure of how successful a club was since the VFL/AFL league introduced in 1897 (the current league) is a different league to the one preceding it. If you were to include prior leagues, then Port Adelaide would be the most successful team.

Besides, I don’t know how much higher the VFL was over a league like the SANFL when a side like Port Adelaide beat VFL sides before. Port Adelaide’s 36 or so premierships prior to VFL/AFL are not relevant because they were not won in the VFL/AFL league and not because they were not won in the highest league of the country.

So we're counting these as equivalent to anything, well congrats to Carlton for winning the 1871 Premiership by eventually beating Melbourne 2 goals to nothing after drawing with them 3 times (although Melbourne claimed they won one of those matches) that season (2 of those games were delayed because of rain). Also apparently that was the only time a team lost that season among the 4 senior teams at the time, despite teams winning 14 times.

Nah nothing before 1897 counts the old VFA was a highly disorganized league, where teams wouldn't even play equal amounts of games, there was no finals series and the premiers were decided by the newspapers of the time, a lot of the reasons why the foundation clubs split to form their own league in 1897 the league we follow today

Stupid post. The VFL of 1897 is a different competition to the VFA of 1896 and prior.

As much as many of my fellow Eagles fans (and fans of other non-Victorian clubs) will try to argue against it, the VFL from 1897 to 1990 is the same competition as the AFL from 1991 to today is. That's why the flag count will always be from 1897 to the present day.

Clubs as an individual entity are more than right to celebrate premierships won in different leagues throughout their history, but the AFL has no reason to include them.

That being said, watching Carlton, Essendon and Colingwood fans of my vintage (born early to mid 80's) clinging onto to their clubs greatness by virtue of premierships won many decades before they were born is quite amusing.

I thought the richest VFA clubs were annoyed because the VFA wanted to spread the gate takings (um equalisation) and the 6 richest clubs at the time wanted none of it and left along with St Kilda (I think the VFL wanted access to their home ground) and Carlton (don't know why).
Anyway in 1894, it seems they worked out an "equal" schedule (13 teams playing 18 games each, well that's equal to AFL standards), although they didn't have behinds or finals until the VFL.

Who says it's the National comp? The AFL is the VFL with a few teams from interstate added. Just because the VFL changed its name to AFL doesn't make it so.

What does the N in SANFL stand for?

Carlton should absolutely celebrate those premierships but they're way, way too long ago for anyone else to care.

The limitation of time for a premiership to be meaningful outside of the club that won it is about a decade at the most.

Nah sorry 8 of the 18 AFL clubs are non VFL.
We’re in the 21st century, so past exploits in the VFL are irrelevant.
Either get on board or get off and live in the past.

Just the sort of flippant tripe you would expect. No thought, no reasoning just the usual unoriginal dross trotted out as if it holds any credence. What a joke.
The thoughts of a person who follows a highly unsuccessful club and thus has a nihilistic world view and thinks nothing matters

Nah, it's still the VFL, just a different name now. Even if we take all of those pre-'national' league premierships away your club's still on the bottom of the premiership ladder.
