Interesting read, but one wonders if there is more to the story.... for me, on the face of it, what is reported doesn't seem enough to ask someone to 'explore their options'.

It's a puff piece. To encourage another club to have a cheap punt and indicate he's not a write off.

Good, don't care what he did, couldn't be worse than a certain Geelong player not getting spoken about..we are not in the position to be moral arbiters, if he's capable of playing he should be given one more chance.
And he is signed for another year. I'd rather cast off players for their lack of on field attributes which we seem unable to do and make a hard decision on that front.
### culture, win games of football and it solves culture, that's all that matters not these 'moral stances' and club culture #####.
I think it's more complex than that.

From our side, there's clearly more to the story; you don't go to all the trouble of getting him out of GC, paying him a reasonable chunk of salary cap, to letting him go inside 2 seasons without there being more to the story. But there would be multiple layers here as well:
  • whatever your problems are - and we were happy to get you through them - we need you to play footy. If you can't or if there's more time off in your future that you need to get your head right, we are happy to expedite a trade for you even if we'd rather you be running round for us.
  • things are changing at Carlton, and one of the ways in which things are changing is that we no longer are interested in hanging around chasing sunk costs.
  • everyone needs to chip in, it's not a stars focus anymore.

From his side, it's a bit more simple:
  • he wants a career in footy.
  • he cannot let whatever issues he's had this year be the end of that goal.

If the constant rumours of Charlie wanting out come courtesy of his manager, the article is in equal amounts an attempt to rehabilitate his reputation within clubland as well as an attempt to mend bridges at Carlton. If we're as determined to have him leave as some have said on here it won't matter - as stated, we don't chase sunk costs anymore - but it's good to know that after Jack and TDK left this isn't a Brisbane 5 situation, that people are abandoning a sinking ship.

Hopefully Elijah Holland is able to maintain his sobriety, continue to get his life back on track, including his footy career. I really hope he is able to be part of the future at Carlton, if we are the best fit to support him and he can repay the faith.

IMHO alcohol use/abuse is far too normalised in Australian culture and this is a VERY serious problem - I am not a teetotaler!

the club isn’t going to be swayed by that article.

he’s told all them the same things before and it’s all been lies. that’s why they want him gone. can’t be trusted at all.

Sam Docherty reveals secret gambling battle

Retired Carlton footballer Sam Docherty has opened up on the “shame and guilt” of his gambling struggles and why he kept the issue hidden before seeking help.

It's all good. We have the disclaimers after every ad, and the ads are so pretty - lit up at the grounds, and gamble responsibly folks!
It's a bit of harmless fun. Not as if it can wreck lives or anything, and how ELSE would we pay for anything and the kids won't notice and...

Can someone give a timeframe for when Doc faced this gambling issue?

I can’t the constant ads and promotions and with what the NBA is going through it’s high time the AFL made a stand.

How many players are influenced and affected by this insidious industry.

If the game can’t stand up on its own without gambling revenue it should close up shop!!!

When he lost his dad.

No paywall ...

Herald Sun:

“Docherty, who has twice battled testicular cancer, is bravely speaking out again to help others.”

Also Herald Sun:
