Rance and Astbury go down, they have Miller 195, Balta 194, Grimes 193, Moore 193, Broad 192, Garthwaite 192, many that can play both ends of the ground. You can manipulate a forwardline, but you can't manipulate height, in tall defenders if you have injuries

We have Marchbank 193cm. Macreadie 196 cm. Plowman 192 cm. but... and a big but....our three are better than their 5, 10, or even 20.

Quality over quantity, Grimes aside.....always.....quality over quantity. Surely. What's the obsession with numbers? How did JGM, O'Shea ++ help us this year? Answer: They didn't.

The question is why Jack Lukosius cant be a big bodied midfield like marcus bontempelli. Lukosius moves extremely well. His running capacity is good but not elite. SOS loves him bcoz he fits that multi dimension player.

Reid and Moore out injured, then another senior body in Dunn. Come GF they get exposed by Kennedy & Vardy/Lycett, while Darling chimes in as a 3rd tall. I don't want to get by, I want a balanced list

McGovern is another 3rd tall. Let's say Weitering and Jones are injured, as they were this year. That would leave us Macreadie 196, Marchbank 193, Plowman 191 or McGovern 191. Do you think they would be undersized, height and strength wise against a few forward lines

  • Dixon, Westoff, Lycett/Ryder, Watts
  • Daniher, Stewart, Hooker
  • Kennedy, Vardy, Hickey/Nic Nat
  • Hawkins, Stanley/Abbott, Ratugolea/Buzza
In fact most sides would have a clear height and size advantage.

Forget the names and quality, but losing ASOS and Rowe as depth, needs to be replaced by at least 1 player and not BSOS, who is a replacement for JGM
I do think they would be. Agree BSOS isn’t the answer he hasn’t even been drafted yet. Macreadies still unproven but I think Gov can play tall if need be. A Jamo or Steven May would be handy

But that's akin to saying should Rance and Astbury go down......what now?
We take these chances all across the board, so what makes key position back posts any more important than for any other posts?

How many KPD's is enough?
How many KPF's is enough?
Back flankers, third back talls, inside mids, outside mids, small backs, small forwards, rucks etc.

Give me a template and we can talk, but remember; We only have 44 genuine spots to fill.
Agee fully. Take out 2 best KPD’s or KPF’s our of any team and they have to change their game plan dramatically. West Cost did it this year by putting Vardy and Lycett up forward and relying on the small to kick more goals with ball hitting the deck more. Key is to have a good midfield which is what we are building now.

If we had, for example pick 5,6 and 10, would you trade that for pick 1?

I certainly wouldn't.

So if you had pick 1 and the above was mentioned, why wouldn't you take it and run?

After all, we supposedly have a great recruiting team now.

Has similar characteristics, but IIRC Bont played quite a bit of midfield time in his draft year. I'm not sure Luko's had the same exposure, but I could be wrong.

Would be fascinating to see how they use Luko should we end up with him. Maybe as a tall winger? Perhaps as an Adam Goodes-style all purpose utility?

If we bring in H.Goddard and get him fit, I can’t see much difference with that and what the tigers or any other team has in reserve. If you lose two keys in any area you have to make do with what you have and if your mids fire and forward are efficiency then you will still be more than competitive. In an ideal world, you don’t get that run with injuries but the pies lost a flag with that scenario by less than a goal and I reckon copped a bad decision at the bell. Was happy to see it because I love hearing them complain with their victim mentality...

He could also end up scrimshaw in the middle.
Best position is roaming forward

I think SOS would be hoping someone like a Grundy, may drift late to one of our picks, if not Goddard is a good addition

Like Pies did this year and got by. If your midfield is dominating and your forward line is efficient, your backline can handle some injuries even though not ideal

Yes the Pies lost the grandfinal because they could not contain kennedy, darling, vardy. 5 goals between them. They beat richmond in the prelim, which had 1 tall forward

Lots of talk that you guys are considering moving pick 1. How true are these rumours? Giving up Walsh would be the single most dumbest decision in the leagues history. The kid is a jet. Head and shoulders above anyone else in the draft class

Papers losing their shit over us having pick one then the rest of the night off.

Seem to forget we did most of the required work while they were navel gazing during trade week.

AFL's draft profile write up for Jimmy Toumpas:

4. Melbourne - Jimmy Toumpas
Height: 182cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 12/01/94
Club: Woodville-West Torrens
Draft range: 2-5
The Demons snare Toumpas at pick four, despite the South Australian being touted a top-three prospect for most of the year. And they'll love him, too, with his class, poise and goalkicking skills excellent for a midfielder. He had an interrupted season with a niggling hip injury, which required surgery at the end of the year, but he'll be fine for the club's pre-season and for next year. Announced himself as a draft pick in this sort of range late last year, when he starred for SANFL side Woodville-West Torrens as they charged to the league premiership. Has excellent leadership qualities that were on show as captain of his state this season, and some already see him growing into an AFL captain.

In the mix: GWS. There's still a good chance Toumpas will go to the Giants as one of the first three picks. In any case, there's no way he'll get past the Bulldogs at five or six.

He sounds good. Lets hope we draft him

Just highlighting that leadership qualities are overrated if the kid is no longer on a list in 5-6 years.

Leadership shouldn't come into play when making drafting decisions. All they need to be at 18 years of age is determined to make it onto an AFL list and be polite and respectful to others. If they earn the respect of the playing group, they should then be classed as a future leader.

Dumb comparison. You found a failed footballer who had leadership qualities mentioned in his draft write up. Did you look through all other draft write ups and tell us which footballers who had leadership qualities mentioned and succeeded?
